Free online directory of Manchester voluntary and community groups.
The Scarman Trust Manchester and CN4M are working in partnership to compile
a comprehensive online directory of voluntary and community groups
throughout Manchester.
You can use the Directory to:
• Promote the work of your group to a wider audience.
• Find the details of voluntary and community groups.
• Register the contact details of your group - FREE!

2.1 Free training for Local BME Volunteers of East Manchester
East Manchester Community Network (EMCN) is undertaking a piece of research
into "Barriers to Engagement for Ethnic Minorities" from East Manchester. As
a result EMCN is offering 12 local BME individuals (volunteers) from East
Manchester an excellent opportunity to gain free training in becoming
community researchers and to support this research. The training course will
be "accredited" and will be provided by Manchester Metropolitan University.
Furthermore the course will involve 20 hours of teaching time.

2.4 MISPA (the Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) is
running its second INSPIRING LEADERS seminar series from January - March
2008 in North Manchester.
The programme is recruiting applicants to fill the final places; the closing
date is 13th December 2007.
The programme is operated at no cost to small clubs, organisations and
groups in the Greater Manchester area and will support individuals who are
leaders, both those who are volunteers or paid, to enhance their skills and
confidence.
The seminar series will begin with a lunch time meeting and then follow
through a pre planned programme of 5 day long seminars over ten weeks. The
content will be practically focussed with an emphasis upon interactive
learning.
Participants will be expected to spend 1-2 hours preparing for each seminar.
Support for the programme will use online learning materials.
Participants will come from a wide range of background but all will promote,
or be seeking to develop, community activities that include physical
activity.
Please note that applications for this programme will only be accepted from
those who represent an independent club, group or organisation. However, if
you work in the public or private sector you could be eligible to apply on
behalf of a group with whom you volunteer outside of your paid remit.

2.5 'Wheels for All' Training
Manchester has three Wheels for All Centres based in Wythenshawe Park,
Debdale Park and Boggart Hole Clough Park.
These courses are for people who are interested in being involved in running
sessions and/or maintaining the adapted cycles and bicycles at one or more
of the above Wheels for All Centres and at other Manchester venues with
priority for the Debdale Centre.

2.6 In Touch Update - British Sign Language Course
In Touch are hoping to host BSL Levels 1 and 2 from December, but are only
able to do this if they have 15 participants for each class. Staff from Arts
About Manchester and the venues involved with In Touch are now booking their
places, but there are still a small number of places available.
BSL Level 1 will run for 25 weeks and costs £200 per participant (including
exam fees and weekly handouts)
BSL Level 2 will run for 45 weeks and costs £400 per participant (including
exam fees and weekly handouts)

3.1 Harpurhey Jobs Fair
Wednesday 21st November 2007 11am - 3pm MANCAT 6th Form College
The jobs fair aim is to highlight current employment opportunities to the
residents of North Manchester in particular within the Harpurhey ward. The
event is for all residents in Manchester organised by the North Manchester
Regeneration Team in partnership with Stepping Stones, JCP, Surestart,
Connexions and MANCAT.
Free parking is available and lunch and refreshments will be provided.
3.2 Community Comics Exhibition
Community Pride Initiative have organised a Community Comics Exhibition of
the Moss Side responses to the Joseph Rowntree Foundation Social Cohesion
report.
The exhibition will be at the Power House on Monday 19th November from
3:30pm - 7pm.

4.1 New Online Funding Information Available
The Scarman Trust Manchester team is pleased to announce the launch of a New
Online Funding Search Facility available on the Scarman Trust Manchester
website.
This facility is a self-help funding and support service providing FREE
information for local voluntary and community organisations which details
comprehensive coverage of Government, Lottery, EU, Non Government and
Charitable Trust funding opportunities.
The extensive search facility allows the user to identify opportunities
efficiently and effectively without raising expectations to eligibility. The
information available is updated and published online every 24 hours from a
national database of over 7700 funding opportunities.
The Funding Search facility gives access to:
• FREE funding search or category browse for easy and quick access.
• 24 hour update for comprehensive funding information.
• Full scheme & contact details linking you directly to funding providers.
• Information, support and contact details to help your organisation meet
its potential.

4.2 Community Health Tutor Training (ChaTT)
A number of people have contacted Pia about this training programme, on 0161

4.3 Breathing Places Programme
Launched in 2006, the Breathing Places Programme is a dedicated small grants
programme (£1,000-£10,000) from the Big Lottery Fund working in partnership
with the BBC.
Phase three of the Breathing Places grants programme will see up to £5
million available to fund projects that support community involvement in
transforming the local environment and for projects that create and care for
wildlife-friendly green spaces.
Organisations eligible to apply to this programme are Voluntary or Community
Sector Organisations, Town Councils, Parish Councils, Schools and Statutory
Health Bodies.

4.4 The UK Workforce Hub and the National Council for Voluntary
Organisations (NCVO) have launched two groundbreaking pieces of research
The UK Voluntary Sector Workforce Almanac 2007 and the Voluntary Sector
Skills Survey 2007.
The Workforce Almanac provides reliable and authoritative evidence on the
size and characteristics of the sector's paid workforce using Labour Force
Survey data, while the Skills Survey - which was produced in conjunction
with Skills for Health - explores skills gaps and shortages within the paid
workforce of the voluntary sector, and is based on a large-scale survey of
over 2,500 UK voluntary sector organisations.
The research revealed many important findings including:
The voluntary sector now employs 611,000 paid employees, an increase of 26%
in ten years;
There has been a huge increase (86%) in the number of voluntary sector
employees working in social care;
One-third of voluntary sector employees (33%) have a degree level or
equivalent qualification;
Recruitment problems are evident across the voluntary sector with 25% of
employers reporting hard to fill vacancies, particularly within youth work,
social care and health care;
Around 30% of voluntary sector employers reported under-skilled staff with
small organisations more likely to report skills gaps;
40% of voluntary sector employers anticipate that recruitment will get more
difficult over the next three years.

NEARIS is looking for an experienced Office Manager for 6 months, to help
run the office of this busy voluntary organisation. You will work closely
with the Chief Executive, helping to set up and implement procedures for HR,
health and safety, and premises management.
This will be a very varied and interesting role, and you will need
experience of managing an office in a small organisation. This is a
temporary position to help the charity to set up a new set of office
systems. £21k (pro rata) for 17.5 or 21 hours/week.
5.2 YPAC Full-Time Youth Worker
JNC points 11-16 (19,362 - £23,291) Initially a 2 year post 37 hours per
week.
You will:
Make and maintain contact with marginalised young people using predominantly
detached youth work methods.
Develop new and existing programmes of work with young people to address

This post will be based in Hulme. It involves supporting the project manager
to run a project dedicated to supporting volunteers in befriending
vulnerable adults from all walks of life. The post involves administration

newsletter, supervision, placement and organisations of events.

1.1 Charlestown Community Forum
Monday 19th November at North Manchester High School for Boys between 6pm
and 8pm.
The Charlestown Community Forum is a way for the community of Charlestown to
have a say on local decisions that are being made in their area. It is open
to anyone who lives, works or has an interest in the area.
We have successfully negotiated with the City Council to come and listen to
what the community thinks about the proposed future of NM High School for
Boys and the High School for Girls. We are also looking into finding out
what is happening with Booth Hall Hospital and can discuss any issues that
people think are important.

2.1 Conflict Resolution Training Courses
Bolton Mediation is pleased to announce further dates for its conflict
resolution training courses.
Tackling Workplace Conflict, their one-day course, is suitable for
professionals developing their understanding of workplace conflict and
strategies for dealing with it constructively. Next runs on Wednesday, 28th
November 2007.
Transforming Workplace Conflict, their two-day advanced course, is suitable
for managers and those wishing to build on their learning from Tackling
Workplace Conflict. Participants learn how to creatively manage conflict in

2.3 5 Day Digital Video Production
Monday 10th to Friday 14th December 2007 9.30am to 5pm
This popular introductory, production based module, is designed to
familiarise the participants with the Digital Video tools & techniques
required to produce a short film from research/scripting to shooting &
editing. On successful completion participants are awarded a WFA Certificate
of Completion
The course will comprise up to 15 participants (in 3 groups of 4-5)
including a group of up to 5 Deaf participants. A BSL Interpreter will be

3.1 Levenshulme Inspire Community Open Day and Consultation
Levenshulme Inspire is a project to transform the local United Reformed
Church into a multi-use community centre. They are holding an open day and
consultation at the Church on Stockport Road, opposite the post office at
the north end of Levenshulme on Saturday the 24th of November, from
10.30am 2pm.
The event is an opportunity for you to tell them how you would like to use
the project's facilities in the future. Hot food and refreshments will be
provided for free by young people from YASP internet café. Architects
drawings will be on display and you will be able to chat to project partners
about the development, including Manchester Methodist Housing Association,
and South Manchester Regen. Plus ALL FM will be doing live interviews on the

3.2 Cheetham & Crumpsall Welcome Centre 3rd Birthday Celebration
On Thursday 15th November, to celebrate 3 years of the Welcome Centre, they
are holding a "Make a Difference in Cheetham" day with extended opening

They are asking for help to pack Christmas "shoebox" gifts for children in
the local area. You can help by donating a small gift or wrapping paper, or
come along to pack a gift box & experience the Welcome Centre Welcome!

3.4 Oxfam Education Regional Policy Seminars: An Outline
With the introduction of 'Every Child Matters' and the 2007 curriculum
review, there has been great progress made in developing a policy
environment conducive to education for global citizenship. Many individuals
and organisations - local, regional and national - have contributed to that
success.
Oxfam GB is convening a series of regional seminars as part of their
research and advocacy programme: "Building an Educational System for the
21st Century". These seminars seek to:
Listen to and understand regional and local perspectives on the national
policy environment
Present Oxfam's analysis and programme of work for discussion with the
participants
Identify strategic partners whose agendas coincide with ours
In keeping with Oxfam's ethos of working with others, we are working with
Manchester DEP, MMU and the Northwest Global Education Network in hosting

4.4 Arts About Manchester are looking for groups
Arts About Manchester are looking for groups to come along to an event at
Castlefield Gallery next Saturday (17th November).
The event runs from 2pm - 5pm and groups can either stay for the duration of
the afternoon or take part in a half hour session. The event is based on an
exhibition by Dan Shipsides, a guy who has combined his two main passions -
rock climbing and art - into one exhibition. He has designed a small
structure based on The Roaches climb in the Peak District, and participants
are invited to come along to the Gallery and climb the structure.
No previous experience is necessary - all equipment is provided and
Manchester Climbing School is on hand to guide people up the structure.
There is also an exhibition of paintings of other climbs to coincide with
the exhibition.
They will then have a chat to the group about future exhibitions coming up
at the Gallery and how they can interact or create contemporary art.

Engagement Workers based in neighbourhoods across the city, working to
empower community and voluntary groups to participate in and influence local
and strategic decision-making. This will be achieved through the development
of a Wythenshawe Community Network.

1.1 Charlestown Community Forum
Monday 19th November at North Manchester High School for Boys between 6pm
and 8pm.
The Charlestown Community Forum is a way for the community of Charlestown to
have a say on local decisions that are being made in their area. It is open
to anyone who lives, works or has an interest in the area.
We have successfully negotiated with the City Council to come and listen to
what the community thinks about the proposed future of NM High School for
Boys and the High School for Girls. We are also looking into finding out
what is happening with Booth Hall Hospital and can discuss any issues that
people think are important.

Bolton Mediation is pleased to announce further dates for its conflict

Tackling Workplace Conflict, their one-day course, is suitable for

2.3 5 Day Digital Video Production
Monday 10th to Friday 14th December 2007 9.30am to 5pm
This popular introductory, production based module, is designed to
familiarise the participants with the Digital Video tools & techniques
required to produce a short film from research/scripting to shooting &

3.1 Levenshulme Inspire Community Open Day and Consultation
Levenshulme Inspire is a project to transform the local United Reformed
Church into a multi-use community centre. They are holding an open day and
consultation at the Church on Stockport Road, opposite the post office at
the north end of Levenshulme on Saturday the 24th of November, from
10.30am 2pm.
The event is an opportunity for you to tell them how you would like to use
the project's facilities in the future. Hot food and refreshments will be
provided for free by young people from YASP internet café. Architects
drawings will be on display and you will be able to chat to project partners
about the development, including Manchester Methodist Housing Association,
and South Manchester Regen. Plus ALL FM will be doing live interviews on the

With the introduction of 'Every Child Matters' and the 2007 curriculum
review, there has been great progress made in developing a policy
environment conducive to education for global citizenship. Many individuals
and organisations - local, regional and national - have contributed to that

Oxfam GB is convening a series of regional seminars as part of their
research and advocacy programme: "Building an Educational System for the
21st Century". These seminars seek to:

East Manchester Community Network (EMCN) is undertaking a piece of research
into "Barriers to Engagement for Ethnic Minorities" from East Manchester. As

community researchers and to support this research. The training course will
be "accredited" and will be provided by Manchester Metropolitan University.

4.4 Arts About Manchester are looking for groups
Arts About Manchester are looking for groups to come along to an event at
Castlefield Gallery next Saturday (17th November).
The event runs from 2pm - 5pm and groups can either stay for the duration of
the afternoon or take part in a half hour session. The event is based on an
exhibition by Dan Shipsides, a guy who has combined his two main passions -
rock climbing and art - into one exhibition. He has designed a small
structure based on The Roaches climb in the Peak District, and participants
are invited to come along to the Gallery and climb the structure.
No previous experience is necessary - all equipment is provided and
Manchester Climbing School is on hand to guide people up the structure.
There is also an exhibition of paintings of other climbs to coincide with
the exhibition.
They will then have a chat to the group about future exhibitions coming up
at the Gallery and how they can interact or create contemporary art.

2.1 Computers and Visual Impairment Training
Chorlton Workshop will be running 4 single introductory/awareness sessions
for anyone working with visually impaired users. IT is extremely useful in
combating the isolation and exclusion often suffered by the visually
impaired and this especially important in the use of the internet.
The sessions will cover;
The main issues faced by visually impaired computer users
Adjustments and software for computer users with various degrees of visual
impairment
A demonstration of Zoomtext - the screen magnification program and Jaws -
the screen reader program
The sessions are designed for individuals who may work with visually
impaired students or clients. Anyone with an interest in developing skills
in this area is also welcome. The sessions are free and will run at Chorlton
Workshop from 10am to 12pm on the dates below.
Computers and Visual Impairment - An introduction Friday 9th , 16th , 23rd ,
30th Nov.
Two further sessions will be run for anyone interested in exploring the
assistive software in greater depth, involving 'hands on' experience of a
screen reader and magnifier.

2.2 Writing a Successful Business Plan - Tuesday 23rd October,
10.30am -12.30pm
Led by Leila Jancovich, this session will explore the reasons for developing
a business plan, as well as give practical opportunities for participants to
begin to consider the key components to developing their own plans,
including, thinking how existing and planned activities meet their own aims
and objectives, and evaluation their strengths and weaknesses as an
organisation.
The session will be held at Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street,
Manchester M4 1LE. Places are free & access costs (e.g. interpretation,
disability access etc) can be covered, however a £5 returnable deposit is
required to reserve a place. Light lunch will be provided. Priority is given
to Manchester-based individuals.

4.1 Research Project: Europeans in Manchester Bi-National couples and
families - looking for interviewees
This research project aims to document the experience of European
bi-national couples living in Manchester/Greater Manchester. It focuses on
bi-national couples and families formed by:
- 2 European expatriates or
- A British citizen and a European expatriate.
This project is based on interviews. Interviewees are invited to discuss
their everyday experiences in Manchester, their relations with their
partner, friends and family in the UK and in home countries. All information
is anonymous and strictly confidential.

4.3 Free management support in the North West
The Cranfield Trust, which provides free management consultancy to voluntary
and community organisations, recently appointed a Project Manager for the
North West. Based in Cheshire, Lara Strickland is working with the Trust's
regional network of volunteer consultants from the commercial sector,
supporting them in giving their time and skills to voluntary groups.

4.4 Development Workers in Greater Manchester
The Workforce Hub is looking for 3 development workers and 1 frontline
organisation from Greater Manchester to help in the creation of a self
assessment tool for workforce development, for use by frontline VCOs. The
hub is keen to have involvement in the creation and use of the tool from
both a frontline perspective and also from an infrastructure/development
worker perspective.
In terms of the time involved it isn't much per organisation, probably 2 and
a half to 3 days maximum by email and telephone to discuss/feedback on the
draft tool - no meetings are thought to be necessary. The Workforce Hub will
reimburse each participant organisation for their employees time spent on
the project.

REELmcr is a not for profit organisation working within local communities to

2.1 Computers and Visual Impairment Training
Chorlton Workshop will be running 4 single introductory/awareness sessions
for anyone working with visually impaired users. IT is extremely useful in
combating the isolation and exclusion often suffered by the visually
impaired and this especially important in the use of the internet.
The sessions will cover;
The main issues faced by visually impaired computer users
Adjustments and software for computer users with various degrees of visual
impairment
A demonstration of Zoomtext - the screen magnification program and Jaws -
the screen reader program
The sessions are designed for individuals who may work with visually
impaired students or clients. Anyone with an interest in developing skills
in this area is also welcome. The sessions are free and will run at Chorlton
Workshop from 10am to 12pm on the dates below.
Computers and Visual Impairment - An introduction Friday 9th , 16th , 23rd ,
30th Nov.
Two further sessions will be run for anyone interested in exploring the
assistive software in greater depth, involving 'hands on' experience of a
screen reader and magnifier.

2.2 Writing a Successful Business Plan - Tuesday 23rd October,
10.30am -12.30pm
Led by Leila Jancovich, this session will explore the reasons for developing
a business plan, as well as give practical opportunities for participants to
begin to consider the key components to developing their own plans,
including, thinking how existing and planned activities meet their own aims
and objectives, and evaluation their strengths and weaknesses as an
organisation.
The session will be held at Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street,
Manchester M4 1LE. Places are free & access costs (e.g. interpretation,
disability access etc) can be covered, however a £5 returnable deposit is
required to reserve a place. Light lunch will be provided. Priority is given
to Manchester-based individuals.

2.3 Transforming Workplace Conflict Training
Bolton Mediation's advanced training course Transforming Workplace Conflict
will run next Tuesday and Wednesday, 30th and 31st October 2007.

This course is a great chance to develop one's skills in creative conflict
management in a vibrant and supportive learning environment.

Like Films? Don't just watch them, make them!
Northside Community Films are offering to help teach people how to make

4.1 Research Project: Europeans in Manchester Bi-National couples and
families - looking for interviewees
This research project aims to document the experience of European
bi-national couples living in Manchester/Greater Manchester. It focuses on
bi-national couples and families formed by:
- 2 European expatriates or
- A British citizen and a European expatriate.
This project is based on interviews. Interviewees are invited to discuss
their everyday experiences in Manchester, their relations with their
partner, friends and family in the UK and in home countries. All information
is anonymous and strictly confidential.

The Manchester Drugs & Race Unit are organising a BME Alcohol Consultation.

4.3 Free management support in the North West
The Cranfield Trust, which provides free management consultancy to voluntary
and community organisations, recently appointed a Project Manager for the
North West. Based in Cheshire, Lara Strickland is working with the Trust's
regional network of volunteer consultants from the commercial sector,
supporting them in giving their time and skills to voluntary groups.

4.4 Development Workers in Greater Manchester
The Workforce Hub is looking for 3 development workers and 1 frontline
organisation from Greater Manchester to help in the creation of a self
assessment tool for workforce development, for use by frontline VCOs. The
hub is keen to have involvement in the creation and use of the tool from
both a frontline perspective and also from an infrastructure/development
worker perspective.
In terms of the time involved it isn't much per organisation, probably 2 and
a half to 3 days maximum by email and telephone to discuss/feedback on the
draft tool - no meetings are thought to be necessary. The Workforce Hub will
reimburse each participant organisation for their employees time spent on
the project.

4.5 The Fallowfield, Whalley Range, Hulme and Moss Side Radio Project
REELmcr is a not for profit organisation working within local communities to
develop real films about real issues affecting real people in the community.
The Fallowfield, Whalley Range, Hulme and Moss Side project will start on

6pm and 9pm, at the Friends Meeting House in Manchester,

2.1 North Manchester FM - Community Radio Training
Training starts at the end of October. Training will be 2 hours a week for 8
weeks, leading up to a month-long broadcast starting on Mon 14th Jan.

Sat 20th October to Sun 4th November
One hundred and thirty three events involving five hundred performers. A two

4.3 Event Space at Royal Mills Complex
Royal Mills is a regeneration of four cotton spinning mills, dating back to
the 19th Century and the development has a combination of apartments and
commercial space.
There is a central courtyard at the development and the space totals over
82,000 sq ft. This space is available to any groups or organisations that
would like to use the facilities - and there is no charge.
There are parking facilities nearby and it is easily accessible from the
city centre - just a 15 minute walk down the Rochdale canal.

4.4 Futures - Volunteering Project
A TimeBank run volunteering project, has just launched in the Greater
Manchester area. The project promotes the benefits of volunteering to
individuals aged 25+ from BME communities living in the Greater Manchester
area.
Futures has a dedicated website where people can find out more about
volunteering and register their interest in becoming a volunteer along with
a local Project Coordinator who will actively place individuals into
volunteering opportunities suited to their interests, needs and goals.

5.2 BBC Manchester Mentor Project 2008
The BBC Manchester Mentor Project aims to encourage young people in Greater
Manchester to join us in the conversation about 'who we are and where we are
going' reflecting the views and creative ideas of young people from local
communities that may have felt excluded from the BBC.
At the end of May 2007, agreement for a BBC Development at Salford Quays was
reached between BBC and Peel Holdings and approved by BBC Trust. This means
that the BBC's vision to create a state-of-art digital production and
broadcasting hub and presence for the BBC in the North of England is now
going to become a reality. So .... there has never been a better time to get

One hundred and thirty three events involving five hundred performers. A two

4.3 Event Space at Royal Mills Complex
Royal Mills is a regeneration of four cotton spinning mills, dating back to
the 19th Century and the development has a combination of apartments and
commercial space.
There is a central courtyard at the development and the space totals over
82,000 sq ft. This space is available to any groups or organisations that
would like to use the facilities - and there is no charge.
There are parking facilities nearby and it is easily accessible from the
city centre - just a 15 minute walk down the Rochdale canal.

A TimeBank run volunteering project, has just launched in the Greater
Manchester area. The project promotes the benefits of volunteering to

The BBC Manchester Mentor Project aims to encourage young people in Greater
Manchester to join us in the conversation about 'who we are and where we are
going' reflecting the views and creative ideas of young people from local
communities that may have felt excluded from the BBC.
At the end of May 2007, agreement for a BBC Development at Salford Quays was
reached between BBC and Peel Holdings and approved by BBC Trust. This means
that the BBC's vision to create a state-of-art digital production and
broadcasting hub and presence for the BBC in the North of England is now

1.4 Health Inequalities Pool
The next meeting of the Health Inequalities Pool will be on the 1st November
2007, 10am until 12pm at the MACC office. They will be agreeing community
and voluntary sector representation via the Pool on the new Adults Health &
Wellbeing Board, which will meet in the next couple of months, receiving
updates on Food Futures Collaborative Funding opportunities as well as
contributing local perspectives on North West indicators for Wellbeing.

3.2 Invitation to FREE art event and forum - on the theme of childbirth
Are you a grandmother, mum or a mum-to-be? Are you a dad who watched your
child come into the world? Do you have strong opinions about the way
childbirth is managed, at home or in hospital?
Come and participate in the debate, or just eat and reflect, as part of the
diverse audience at Matrix. Matrix is an evening forum and banquet on
Saturday 27th October 2007, 4.30pm -10pm at Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road,
Manchester.
Art will ignite conversations about childbirth between individuals who would
otherwise never have crossed paths. The audience will be seated in the
ladies' third class swimming pool. During the evening, the artists and
childbirth practitioners involved in the Birth Rites collaborations will be
giving presentations, offering insights into their experiences of exposure
to one another's practice over the course of this year.
The presentations will be followed by an aphrodisiac-themed banquet at which
the conversations about art and childbirth will continue. Artist Kara Ramsey
will collaborate with Birth Rites team and Beliz catering company to bring
about a sensuous gourmet art installation.

The Institute for Political and Economic Governance (IPEG) is carrying out
the research, funded by the North West Improvement Network, which is made
up of the 46 local authorities in the North West. This is a really good
opportunity for organisations to feed back their opinions on this important
agenda to local government and other audiences.

3.2 Invitation to FREE art event and forum - on the theme of childbirth
Are you a grandmother, mum or a mum-to-be? Are you a dad who watched your
child come into the world? Do you have strong opinions about the way
childbirth is managed, at home or in hospital?
Come and participate in the debate, or just eat and reflect, as part of the
diverse audience at Matrix. Matrix is an evening forum and banquet on
Saturday 27th October 2007, 4.30pm -10pm at Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road,
Manchester.
Art will ignite conversations about childbirth between individuals who would
otherwise never have crossed paths. The audience will be seated in the
ladies' third class swimming pool. During the evening, the artists and
childbirth practitioners involved in the Birth Rites collaborations will be
giving presentations, offering insights into their experiences of exposure
to one another's practice over the course of this year.
The presentations will be followed by an aphrodisiac-themed banquet at which
the conversations about art and childbirth will continue. Artist Kara Ramsey
will collaborate with Birth Rites team and Beliz catering company to bring
about a sensuous gourmet art installation.

3.3 Bogus Callers Awareness Event
There is good reason for each of us to be concerned about bogus callers but
how do you protect yourself against them? The answer might be around the
corner at the Hall Lane Resource Centre on Hall Lane in Baguley on the 26th

3.4 Good Governance Conference
GMCVO is holding a conference on 'Good Governance' on Monday 26th November,
which will address key issues in developing effective governance on
voluntary sector boards and management committees. There will be
presentations on what makes good governance and the impact of the new
Charities Act on governance, as well as workshops, a case study, and panel
discussion. The event is aimed at trustees and managers from VCS
organisations with responsibility for governance support.

Round 3 of Connecting Communities Plus, Community Grants is open. The grants

4.2 Evaluation of the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning
Shared Intelligence has been commissioned by the Improvement and Development

barriers that currently exist.

Manchester University are carrying out a survey on attitudes to the issue of

in the North West.
The Institute for Political and Economic Governance (IPEG) is carrying out
the research, funded by the North West Improvement Network, which is made
up of the 46 local authorities in the North West. This is a really good
opportunity for organisations to feed back their opinions on this important
agenda to local government and other audiences.

You may be aware that the Community Network for Manchester is currently
conducting a review (facilitated by the Exec.)
As this is our first year as CN4M Ltd. This year's review needs to focus on
the financial as well as operational aspects of the organisation. The
Manchester Partnership has also recently undergone a major revision of its
structure - we naturally need to consider what implications this has for
CN4M.
The review will seek to ensure we have the right systems and structures in
place to meet these, and future challenges. It will be a way for all staff,
strategy group and the wider voluntary/community sector participants to set
the direction - to give the Exec its mandate. It is a chance to put forward
your ideas for how we can grow and develop.

3.2 Are you interested in Manchester's Open Spaces?
Open Spaces Assessment consultation workshop on Thursday 11th October, 6pm -
8pm at the Town Hall
The Open Spaces Assessment is being carried out to identify the needs around
open spaces in Manchester and use this to create standards around quality
and quantity of open space.
Existing open spaces are then compared to this standard so that the council
can work out what needs to be done to bring them all up to standard (which
could include creating more space, if a need is identified).
This information will then form the basis of a 15 year investment programme,
and policies that go in the Core Strategy of the Local Development Framework
(LDF), a planning document being consulted on this Autumn.
The workshop will ask people for their views on the quantity and quality of
Open Spaces in Manchester, accessibility, strengths and weaknesses and good
and bad practice.

4.2 Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning - Interim Report
Consultation Questions 2007
NIACE launched the Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning at the
beginning of 2007. The Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning
has now completed the interim report about the issues and experiences of
disabled staff working in lifelong learning (including further and higher
education, adult and community learning and work based learning).
They would like to know whether the key issues identified in the interim
report are right and whether there are any other issues you think they
should explore and highlight. We would like to hear from any individual or
organisation interested in the issues discussed in the report.
The responses you send the commission will be used to contribute to the
final report in March 2008. The report on the findings will identify areas
of good practice and areas for improvement. The report will make
recommendations for positive change to those in a position to make those
changes, including relevant government departments.

4.3 Office Space Required
One Parent Families Gingerbread - is seeking new offices for its Manchester
based staff. They require desk space for four to five staff and room for a
moderate amount of files and stationary supplies etc.

The National Community Forum (NCF) brings community voices into national
government. Board members tell Ministers and civil servants what it's really

their unique perspectives, fresh ideas and passion for the community, they
help narrow the gap between deprived areas and the rest of the country.

NCF board members will be required to contribute twelve days of their time
per year, being paid £163 per day plus expenses. The 'Chair' will need to be

Roby a respected and established preventative mental health charity
providing accessible and responsive services in the Longsight area.

activity-therapeutic group for elderly people (over 50's) from the BME

5.7 Volunteer Advice Workers Needed
Cheetham Hill Advice Centre (CHAC) and Advice and Community Resource Centre
(ACRC) are looking for individuals to join our new Volunteer Programmes.
Volunteers will train to advise people from the surrounding communities on
issues such as welfare benefits, tax credits, housing and consumer etc.
The Programme includes a six months accredited course in Advice Work Skills
and Welfare Benefits starting on Monday 29th October 2007.
You need to be able to offer at least 1.5 days a week, ideally 2 days a
week, for a minimum of one year. We will refund reasonable out-of-pocket
expenses and we have a small budget for childcare expenses.
We are particularly interested in applications from local speakers of
community languages e.g. Somali, Arabic, Urdu and Punjabi. We are also
interested in hearing from asylum seekers, refugees.

1.1 Community Network for Manchester Review
You may be aware that the Community Network for Manchester is currently
conducting a review (facilitated by the Exec.)
As this is our first year as CN4M Ltd. This year's review needs to focus on
the financial as well as operational aspects of the organisation. The
Manchester Partnership has also recently undergone a major revision of its
structure - we naturally need to consider what implications this has for
CN4M.
The review will seek to ensure we have the right systems and structures in
place to meet these, and future challenges. It will be a way for all staff,
strategy group and the wider voluntary/community sector participants to set
the direction - to give the Exec its mandate. It is a chance to put forward
your ideas for how we can grow and develop.

2.1 Training for Trainers - Community Education for Social Change
A free accredited course taking place from 5th October to 30th November 2007
on Fridays from 1pm to 3.30pm at Manchester Metropolitan University -

Credits: 10 credit MMU (level5) module, Participants will obtain
certificates of participation
This is an introductory course in adult education and community training
design aimed at practitioners involved in community work with adults across
all sectors. It draws on the workers practice and expects participants to
carry out a group project demonstrating their learning.

overcome barriers in the work place.
Have the opportunity to view some of the technology which visually impaired
people use to undertake their work.
Receive information regarding the 'Access to Work' scheme which provides
financial support towards the cost of equipment and other support for
visually impaired people.

3.2 Are you interested in Manchester's Open Spaces?
Open Spaces Assessment consultation workshop on Thursday 11th October, 6pm -
8pm at the Town Hall
The Open Spaces Assessment is being carried out to identify the needs around
open spaces in Manchester and use this to create standards around quality
and quantity of open space.
Existing open spaces are then compared to this standard so that the council
can work out what needs to be done to bring them all up to standard (which
could include creating more space, if a need is identified).
This information will then form the basis of a 15 year investment programme,
and policies that go in the Core Strategy of the Local Development Framework
(LDF), a planning document being consulted on this Autumn.
The workshop will ask people for their views on the quantity and quality of
Open Spaces in Manchester, accessibility, strengths and weaknesses and good
and bad practice.

3.5 Urban Regeneration Showcase Event
Manchester Central Conference Centre (GMEX) Wednesday 10th October 2007,
12.15 - 4.30 pm
This event will provide a fantastic opportunity to view the diverse range of
projects being delivered under this unique £3.2M programme which is a
partnership between 4 Universities and funded by the Higher Education
Funding Council for England. Projects are focused around four key themes:
Crime, Health & Well-being, Community Cohesion and Enterprise.
As well as showcasing some of the innovative work being developed to address
key urban regeneration challenges in the North of England, it will be an
opportunity to highlight the important role that universities can play in
the social and economic regeneration of their regions. Senior
representatives from each of the Universities will be present, and look
forward to meeting you on this exciting occasion.

4.2 Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning - Interim Report
Consultation Questions 2007
NIACE launched the Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning at the
beginning of 2007. The Commission for Disabled Staff in Lifelong Learning
has now completed the interim report about the issues and experiences of
disabled staff working in lifelong learning (including further and higher
education, adult and community learning and work based learning).
They would like to know whether the key issues identified in the interim
report are right and whether there are any other issues you think they
should explore and highlight. We would like to hear from any individual or
organisation interested in the issues discussed in the report.
The responses you send the commission will be used to contribute to the
final report in March 2008. The report on the findings will identify areas
of good practice and areas for improvement. The report will make
recommendations for positive change to those in a position to make those
changes, including relevant government departments.

4.3 Office Space Required
One Parent Families Gingerbread - is seeking new offices for its Manchester
based staff. They require desk space for four to five staff and room for a
moderate amount of files and stationary supplies etc.
They would also need occasional use of a private meeting room and require
natural light and ventilation. They would like a location that is on the
south/central side of Manchester no further out than Chorlton or
Fallowfield. Ardwick, Rusholme, Longsight and Levenshulme would be
considered.
They would also consider a reasonably priced central location but not on
north or east side of the city centre. If you know of vacant or soon to be

4.4 Performance Hub Database
The Performance Hub is today launching a new online searchable database
which helps third sector organisations in England find support to improve
their performance.
This is an unrivalled opportunity for you to promote any support you offer
to third sector organisations (TSOs) with improving performance. This
includes support with everything from quality and strategic planning to
monitoring and evaluation.
Over 6,000 individuals currently visit the Performance Hub website each
month. Once we have 100 entries on the Support Finder, we'll be promoting
the resource through our 2,700-strong Active Network, promotional banners on
our home page and through other third sector networks. Don't miss out on

5.2 Members Needed for the National Community Forum
The National Community Forum (NCF) brings community voices into national
government. Board members tell Ministers and civil servants what it's really
like to live and/or work in deprived areas and work together to find
solutions to the very real issues in the community. They provide feedback on
initiatives and policies to help ensure they work for everyone and, with
their unique perspectives, fresh ideas and passion for the community, they
help narrow the gap between deprived areas and the rest of the country.
This is a fantastic opportunity to work with those in power to make a
positive impact on quality of life for years to come.
NCF board members will be required to contribute twelve days of their time
per year, being paid £163 per day plus expenses. The 'Chair' will need to be
able to lead the group of 24, keeping them focused and on track. The Chair
will work twenty days a year, being paid £213 per day plus expenses.

5.5 BME Development/Group Worker (MALE) - Roby
Roby a respected and established preventative mental health charity
providing accessible and responsive services in the Longsight area.
This is initially an 8 month appointment: continuation funding will be

The post holder will be responsible for initiating a South Asian Men's
activity-therapeutic group for elderly people (over 50's) from the BME
community to improve their capacity to identify their own health needs,
address them appropriately and improve well-being. The work is preventative
and will address issues relating to social exclusion, awareness of mental
health problems and access to statutory and community based health services.
There is a research element to the post that is linked to a National
Evaluation of the quality of life for Older Citizens. Development and / or
Group Work experience is essential. Community languages Urdu and Punjabi are
required.

5.7 Volunteer Advice Workers Needed
Cheetham Hill Advice Centre (CHAC) and Advice and Community Resource Centre
(ACRC) are looking for individuals to join our new Volunteer Programmes.
Volunteers will train to advise people from the surrounding communities on
issues such as welfare benefits, tax credits, housing and consumer etc.
The Programme includes a six months accredited course in Advice Work Skills
and Welfare Benefits starting on Monday 29th October 2007.
You need to be able to offer at least 1.5 days a week, ideally 2 days a
week, for a minimum of one year. We will refund reasonable out-of-pocket
expenses and we have a small budget for childcare expenses.
We are particularly interested in applications from local speakers of
community languages e.g. Somali, Arabic, Urdu and Punjabi. We are also
interested in hearing from asylum seekers, refugees.
