1.1 CN4M Strategy Group
The next CN4M Strategy Group meeting will take place on Tuesday 11th

2.0 Training
2.1 Free Gender Training for Community Groups
The Gender and Participation (GAP) Unit is a pool of researchers and
community trainers based at Manchester Metropolitan University' Community
Audit and Evaluation Centre. The GAP Unit undertakes research, training and
advocacy to help people to meet the challenges of building a more just,
inclusive and equal society.
Between now and March 2008, they are offering a half-day course on gender
for community and voluntary organisations in the North West. Would your
members benefit from a fun workshop exploring genders issues?
Some of the questions that might be covered:
What is gender?
Why does gender matter?
Are men less likely to be involved in community activities? If so, why?
Why are women less involved than men at the city-wide level?
Why do men and women give up their time and what makes them not want to
bother?
What can be done to promote full participation of both men and women in
community activities and decision-making processes?
There is no cost to participants and they can make child care and other help
available. They will come to you and design a session that meets your

2.3 Steps to Success
Make it Happen Consultancy is pleased to announce the launch of it's 'Steps
to Success' Project in partnership with the Manchester & Salford Enterprise
Initiative Enterprise Engagement and Support Pilot Project.
This project enables us to provide free workshops, free training and free
consultancy to people aged over 50 years in Manchester and Salford. We have
30 places - 15 in Salford and 15 in Manchester. All delegates must be in
receipt of either Job Seekers Allowance or Income Support.
The aim of the project is to help people to set up their own enterprise, be
it a Community Group, Social Enterprise or Private Business.

2.5 Bid Writing Course
A new Bid Writing Course delivered by Business Support Solutions.

3.2 Food Futures Community and Voluntary Sector Commissioning Programme -
Launch Event
Cross Street Chapel from 11am - 2pm 13th December
£40,000 of funding is being offered by Food Futures to voluntary and
community sector organisations that wish to collaborate on projects to
promote a healthier lifestyle through healthy eating and local food.
Organisations are invited to a launch event on Thursday 13th December in
which there will be a presentation about the Commissioning Programme,
followed by a workshop where there will be an opportunity to explore how the
collaborative process will work, and how they may contribute to and benefit
from it.
Creative Local Solutions will host the event and will facilitate the main
work of the Commissioning Programme. This project is also supported by
Manchester Alliance for Community Care.

4.0 Information
4.1 Weekly Women's Wednesdays WWW
Signpost (YPSF) are running a drop-in session for young women aged 16 -
25yrs. The WWW will enable young women to access information and activities
to improve their mental health, physical health and general well being.
The WWW is in response to a need for young women to have a safe place to
meet and explore opportunities within the Wythenshawe area. WWW aims to meet
the individual needs of young women, as identified by the young women
themselves.
The WWW drop-in runs on a Wednesday morning @ Signpost from 10am -12pm and
will be supported by the 16-17yr old Community Mental Health Team worker
Diane Walker.

4.2 Concessionary Bus Fares for Children and Young People
In April 2007 the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA)
announced an increase in the concessionary bus fare from 50p to 70p.
The Greater Manchester Transport Resource Unit (GMTRU) is investigating the
impact of the price increase on families and children and identifying the
main issues they have around transport. (GMTRU provides a link between the
voluntary sector and GMPTA).
If you are responsible for any children between the ages of 5 and 15 and
would like to contribute to a report that will be presented to GMPTA please
help by completing a short survey. There are ten questions that will take
between five and ten minutes in total to complete.

4.3 NHS in Manchester
The NHS in Manchester has set up a process to consult about its priorities
over the next two years - with an intention to shift the focus towards
actively improving health as well as treating illness.

MACC is aiming to bring together the voluntary sector participants involved

4.4 NCVO response to the OTS-ESRC third sector research centre scoping
exercise

The Skills to Enable Community Learning Programme aims to develop the skills
of staff and volunteers working in community and voluntary organisations in
Greater Manchester. These community groups must work with disadvantaged
groups to deliver skills for life and key skills training.
Our IT Courses will be delivered through accredited learning opportunities
in the areas of Management, ICT skills and tutor training.

Action for Blind People's Visual Awareness training can be tailored to match
the needs of any organisation or company

3.2 Local Development Framework : Information session for community groups

North West Planning Aid are working with the Sustainable Neighbourhoods Pool
to provide an information session for community groups on the Local
Development Framework (LDF). This is to support groups in forming a response
to the consultation on the LDF taking place until 4th February 2008.
The LDF is a document which will set out planning policies for development
in Manchester. For example policies on affordable housing, the environment,
transport and energy.

3.3 Eden Project talk at the University of Manchester
You are invited to a talk on Monday Nov 26th from 4pm - 5:30pm (followed by
refreshments) at the Cordingley Lecture Theatre, Humanities Bridgeford
Street (Building 35 on the

The talk is by two speakers from the Eden Project, Mark Paterson and Sveva
Gallmann. Both Mark and Sveva wish to discuss what the Eden Project is and
what it has achieved to date, as a lead into the main topic, the design,
build and use of a dynamic third covered Biome, known as The Edge.
The Edge will be a visionary new building to address the great challenges of
the 21st century, including those of climate change and resource shortages.
It will look at what it will take for humankind to rise to such challenges.
It will look at different cultures, past and present; those who live in
extreme environments to remind us that even where resources may be limited.

4.1 Free photocopiers
Bruntwood have 2 photocopiers to give away asap. The community
organisation/charity would have to collect from Manchester City Centre.

4.2 New Sports Drop In
A new initiative in the form of a "sports drop in" is starting Monday at
Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre Wythenshawe 1-3pm. This drop in hopes to
target young(er) men with mental health problems (although women and anyone
who attends won't be turned away).
Exercise is good for our mental and physical health so if you can get

4.3 Newspapers and magazines free to a good home
BUPA's marketing department receive many newspapers and magazines as part of
their work. They would love to give these to an organisation that could use
them or read them as they usually just send them to recycle.
It would mean that the organisation would have to collect weekly. Louise

BUPA will have 5 decorated Christmas trees following a training session on

Cares is an employee volunteering programme which matches enthusiastic
employee volunteers with local community organisations. Employees from
local businesses across Manchester are keen to use their time, skills and
resources to help make a difference by undertaking one-day team challenges
at community venues to help redecorate rooms, carry out garden makeovers,
organise social activities or workshops to develop skills around interview
techniques, CV writing, budgeting etc.
If you think you have a team challenge project and would like to benefit
from this free support please contact Business in the Community who run the
employee volunteering scheme called Cares. A member of the Cares team would
then visit you to discuss your project.

The Skills to Enable Community Learning Programme aims to develop the skills
of staff and volunteers working in community and voluntary organisations in
Greater Manchester. These community groups must work with disadvantaged
groups to deliver skills for life and key skills training.
Our IT Courses will be delivered through accredited learning opportunities
in the areas of Management, ICT skills and tutor training.

3.3 Eden Project talk at the University of Manchester
You are invited to a talk on Monday Nov 26th from 4pm - 5:30pm (followed by
refreshments) at the Cordingley Lecture Theatre, Humanities Bridgeford

The talk is by two speakers from the Eden Project, Mark Paterson and Sveva
Gallmann. Both Mark and Sveva wish to discuss what the Eden Project is and
what it has achieved to date, as a lead into the main topic, the design,
build and use of a dynamic third covered Biome, known as The Edge.
The Edge will be a visionary new building to address the great challenges of
the 21st century, including those of climate change and resource shortages.
It will look at what it will take for humankind to rise to such challenges.
It will look at different cultures, past and present; those who live in
extreme environments to remind us that even where resources may be limited.

4.2 New Sports Drop In
A new initiative in the form of a "sports drop in" is starting Monday at
Woodhouse Park Lifestyle Centre Wythenshawe 1-3pm. This drop in hopes to
target young(er) men with mental health problems (although women and anyone
who attends won't be turned away).
Exercise is good for our mental and physical health so if you can get

4.3 Newspapers and magazines free to a good home
BUPA's marketing department receive many newspapers and magazines as part of
their work. They would love to give these to an organisation that could use
them or read them as they usually just send them to recycle.

East Manchester Community Network (EMCN) is undertaking a piece of research
into "Barriers to Engagement for Ethnic Minorities" from East Manchester. As
a result EMCN is offering 12 local BME individuals (volunteers) from East
Manchester an excellent opportunity to gain free training in becoming
community researchers and to support this research. The training course will
be "accredited" and will be provided by Manchester Metropolitan University.
Furthermore the course will involve 20 hours of teaching time.

2.4 MISPA (the Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) is
running its second INSPIRING LEADERS seminar series from January - March
2008 in North Manchester.
The programme is recruiting applicants to fill the final places; the closing
date is 13th December 2007.
The programme is operated at no cost to small clubs, organisations and
groups in the Greater Manchester area and will support individuals who are
leaders, both those who are volunteers or paid, to enhance their skills and
confidence.
The seminar series will begin with a lunch time meeting and then follow
through a pre planned programme of 5 day long seminars over ten weeks. The
content will be practically focussed with an emphasis upon interactive
learning.
Participants will be expected to spend 1-2 hours preparing for each seminar.
Support for the programme will use online learning materials.
Participants will come from a wide range of background but all will promote,
or be seeking to develop, community activities that include physical
activity.
Please note that applications for this programme will only be accepted from
those who represent an independent club, group or organisation. However, if
you work in the public or private sector you could be eligible to apply on
behalf of a group with whom you volunteer outside of your paid remit.

2.6 In Touch Update - British Sign Language Course
In Touch are hoping to host BSL Levels 1 and 2 from December, but are only
able to do this if they have 15 participants for each class. Staff from Arts
About Manchester and the venues involved with In Touch are now booking their
places, but there are still a small number of places available.
BSL Level 1 will run for 25 weeks and costs £200 per participant (including
exam fees and weekly handouts)
BSL Level 2 will run for 45 weeks and costs £400 per participant (including
exam fees and weekly handouts)

3.1 Harpurhey Jobs Fair

The jobs fair aim is to highlight current employment opportunities to the

Online Funding Search Facility available on the Scarman Trust Manchester
website.
This facility is a self-help funding and support service providing FREE
information for local voluntary and community organisations which details
comprehensive coverage of Government, Lottery, EU, Non Government and
Charitable Trust funding opportunities.
The extensive search facility allows the user to identify opportunities
efficiently and effectively without raising expectations to eligibility. The
information available is updated and published online every 24 hours from a
national database of over 7700 funding opportunities.

4.3 Breathing Places Programme
Launched in 2006, the Breathing Places Programme is a dedicated small grants
programme (£1,000-£10,000) from the Big Lottery Fund working in partnership
with the BBC.
Phase three of the Breathing Places grants programme will see up to £5
million available to fund projects that support community involvement in
transforming the local environment and for projects that create and care for
wildlife-friendly green spaces.
Organisations eligible to apply to this programme are Voluntary or Community
Sector Organisations, Town Councils, Parish Councils, Schools and Statutory
Health Bodies.

4.4 The UK Workforce Hub and the National Council for Voluntary
Organisations (NCVO) have launched two groundbreaking pieces of research
The UK Voluntary Sector Workforce Almanac 2007 and the Voluntary Sector
Skills Survey 2007.
The Workforce Almanac provides reliable and authoritative evidence on the
size and characteristics of the sector's paid workforce using Labour Force
Survey data, while the Skills Survey - which was produced in conjunction

into "Barriers to Engagement for Ethnic Minorities" from East Manchester. As

2.4 MISPA (the Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) is
running its second INSPIRING LEADERS seminar series from January - March
2008 in North Manchester.
The programme is recruiting applicants to fill the final places; the closing
date is 13th December 2007.
The programme is operated at no cost to small clubs, organisations and
groups in the Greater Manchester area and will support individuals who are
leaders, both those who are volunteers or paid, to enhance their skills and
confidence.
The seminar series will begin with a lunch time meeting and then follow
through a pre planned programme of 5 day long seminars over ten weeks. The
content will be practically focussed with an emphasis upon interactive
learning.
Participants will be expected to spend 1-2 hours preparing for each seminar.
Support for the programme will use online learning materials.
Participants will come from a wide range of background but all will promote,
or be seeking to develop, community activities that include physical
activity.

In Touch are hoping to host BSL Levels 1 and 2 from December, but are only
able to do this if they have 15 participants for each class. Staff from Arts
About Manchester and the venues involved with In Touch are now booking their

BSL Level 1 will run for 25 weeks and costs £200 per participant (including

4.3 Breathing Places Programme
Launched in 2006, the Breathing Places Programme is a dedicated small grants
programme (£1,000-£10,000) from the Big Lottery Fund working in partnership
with the BBC.
Phase three of the Breathing Places grants programme will see up to £5
million available to fund projects that support community involvement in
transforming the local environment and for projects that create and care for
wildlife-friendly green spaces.
Organisations eligible to apply to this programme are Voluntary or Community
Sector Organisations, Town Councils, Parish Councils, Schools and Statutory

1.1 Charlestown Community Forum
Monday 19th November at North Manchester High School for Boys between 6pm
and 8pm.
The Charlestown Community Forum is a way for the community of Charlestown to
have a say on local decisions that are being made in their area. It is open
to anyone who lives, works or has an interest in the area.
We have successfully negotiated with the City Council to come and listen to
what the community thinks about the proposed future of NM High School for
Boys and the High School for Girls. We are also looking into finding out
what is happening with Booth Hall Hospital and can discuss any issues that
people think are important.

3.1 Levenshulme Inspire Community Open Day and Consultation
Levenshulme Inspire is a project to transform the local United Reformed
Church into a multi-use community centre. They are holding an open day and
consultation at the Church on Stockport Road, opposite the post office at
the north end of Levenshulme on Saturday the 24th of November, from
10.30am 2pm.
The event is an opportunity for you to tell them how you would like to use
the project's facilities in the future. Hot food and refreshments will be
provided for free by young people from YASP internet café. Architects
drawings will be on display and you will be able to chat to project partners
about the development, including Manchester Methodist Housing Association,
and South Manchester Regen. Plus ALL FM will be doing live interviews on the

3.4 Oxfam Education Regional Policy Seminars: An Outline
With the introduction of 'Every Child Matters' and the 2007 curriculum
review, there has been great progress made in developing a policy
environment conducive to education for global citizenship. Many individuals
and organisations - local, regional and national - have contributed to that
success.
Oxfam GB is convening a series of regional seminars as part of their
research and advocacy programme: "Building an Educational System for the
21st Century". These seminars seek to:
Listen to and understand regional and local perspectives on the national
policy environment

into "Barriers to Engagement for Ethnic Minorities" from East Manchester. As

community researchers and to support this research. The training course will

Arts About Manchester are looking for groups to come along to an event at
Castlefield Gallery next Saturday (17th November).
The event runs from 2pm - 5pm and groups can either stay for the duration of
the afternoon or take part in a half hour session. The event is based on an
exhibition by Dan Shipsides, a guy who has combined his two main passions -
rock climbing and art - into one exhibition. He has designed a small
structure based on The Roaches climb in the Peak District, and participants
are invited to come along to the Gallery and climb the structure.
No previous experience is necessary - all equipment is provided and
Manchester Climbing School is on hand to guide people up the structure.
There is also an exhibition of paintings of other climbs to coincide with
the exhibition.
They will then have a chat to the group about future exhibitions coming up
at the Gallery and how they can interact or create contemporary art.

1.1 Charlestown Community Forum
Monday 19th November at North Manchester High School for Boys between 6pm
and 8pm.
The Charlestown Community Forum is a way for the community of Charlestown to
have a say on local decisions that are being made in their area. It is open
to anyone who lives, works or has an interest in the area.
We have successfully negotiated with the City Council to come and listen to
what the community thinks about the proposed future of NM High School for
Boys and the High School for Girls. We are also looking into finding out
what is happening with Booth Hall Hospital and can discuss any issues that
people think are important.

This popular introductory, production based module, is designed to

required to produce a short film from research/scripting to shooting &

3.1 Levenshulme Inspire Community Open Day and Consultation
Levenshulme Inspire is a project to transform the local United Reformed
Church into a multi-use community centre. They are holding an open day and
consultation at the Church on Stockport Road, opposite the post office at
the north end of Levenshulme on Saturday the 24th of November, from
10.30am 2pm.
The event is an opportunity for you to tell them how you would like to use
the project's facilities in the future. Hot food and refreshments will be
provided for free by young people from YASP internet café. Architects
drawings will be on display and you will be able to chat to project partners
about the development, including Manchester Methodist Housing Association,
and South Manchester Regen. Plus ALL FM will be doing live interviews on the

The review will seek to ensure we have the right systems and structures in

2.1 Computers and Visual Impairment Training
Chorlton Workshop will be running 4 single introductory/awareness sessions
for anyone working with visually impaired users. IT is extremely useful in
combating the isolation and exclusion often suffered by the visually
impaired and this especially important in the use of the internet.
The sessions will cover;
The main issues faced by visually impaired computer users
Adjustments and software for computer users with various degrees of visual
impairment
A demonstration of Zoomtext - the screen magnification program and Jaws -
the screen reader program
The sessions are designed for individuals who may work with visually
impaired students or clients. Anyone with an interest in developing skills
in this area is also welcome. The sessions are free and will run at Chorlton
Workshop from 10am to 12pm on the dates below.
Computers and Visual Impairment - An introduction Friday 9th , 16th , 23rd ,
30th Nov.
Two further sessions will be run for anyone interested in exploring the
assistive software in greater depth, involving 'hands on' experience of a
screen reader and magnifier.

2.2 Writing a Successful Business Plan - Tuesday 23rd October,
10.30am -12.30pm
Led by Leila Jancovich, this session will explore the reasons for developing
a business plan, as well as give practical opportunities for participants to
begin to consider the key components to developing their own plans,
including, thinking how existing and planned activities meet their own aims
and objectives, and evaluation their strengths and weaknesses as an
organisation.
The session will be held at Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street,
Manchester M4 1LE. Places are free & access costs (e.g. interpretation,
disability access etc) can be covered, however a £5 returnable deposit is
required to reserve a place. Light lunch will be provided. Priority is given
to Manchester-based individuals.

4.1 Research Project: Europeans in Manchester Bi-National couples and
families - looking for interviewees
This research project aims to document the experience of European
bi-national couples living in Manchester/Greater Manchester. It focuses on
bi-national couples and families formed by:
- 2 European expatriates or
- A British citizen and a European expatriate.
This project is based on interviews. Interviewees are invited to discuss
their everyday experiences in Manchester, their relations with their
partner, friends and family in the UK and in home countries. All information
is anonymous and strictly confidential.

The Manchester Drugs & Race Unit are organising a BME Alcohol Consultation.
The aim of this consultation event is to find out what you think about
alcohol and concerns you have about its use and impact on your community.

The Cranfield Trust, which provides free management consultancy to voluntary
and community organisations, recently appointed a Project Manager for the
North West. Based in Cheshire, Lara Strickland is working with the Trust's
regional network of volunteer consultants from the commercial sector,
supporting them in giving their time and skills to voluntary groups.

4.4 Development Workers in Greater Manchester
The Workforce Hub is looking for 3 development workers and 1 frontline
organisation from Greater Manchester to help in the creation of a self
assessment tool for workforce development, for use by frontline VCOs. The
hub is keen to have involvement in the creation and use of the tool from
both a frontline perspective and also from an infrastructure/development
worker perspective.
In terms of the time involved it isn't much per organisation, probably 2 and
a half to 3 days maximum by email and telephone to discuss/feedback on the
draft tool - no meetings are thought to be necessary. The Workforce Hub will
reimburse each participant organisation for their employees time spent on
the project.

REELmcr is a not for profit organisation working within local communities to

6pm and 9pm, at the Friends Meeting House in Manchester,

2.1 Computers and Visual Impairment Training
Chorlton Workshop will be running 4 single introductory/awareness sessions
for anyone working with visually impaired users. IT is extremely useful in
combating the isolation and exclusion often suffered by the visually
impaired and this especially important in the use of the internet.
The sessions will cover;
The main issues faced by visually impaired computer users
Adjustments and software for computer users with various degrees of visual
impairment
A demonstration of Zoomtext - the screen magnification program and Jaws -
the screen reader program
The sessions are designed for individuals who may work with visually
impaired students or clients. Anyone with an interest in developing skills
in this area is also welcome. The sessions are free and will run at Chorlton
Workshop from 10am to 12pm on the dates below.
Computers and Visual Impairment - An introduction Friday 9th , 16th , 23rd ,
30th Nov.
Two further sessions will be run for anyone interested in exploring the
assistive software in greater depth, involving 'hands on' experience of a
screen reader and magnifier.

2.2 Writing a Successful Business Plan - Tuesday 23rd October,
10.30am -12.30pm
Led by Leila Jancovich, this session will explore the reasons for developing
a business plan, as well as give practical opportunities for participants to
begin to consider the key components to developing their own plans,
including, thinking how existing and planned activities meet their own aims
and objectives, and evaluation their strengths and weaknesses as an
organisation.
The session will be held at Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street,
Manchester M4 1LE. Places are free & access costs (e.g. interpretation,
disability access etc) can be covered, however a £5 returnable deposit is
required to reserve a place. Light lunch will be provided. Priority is given
to Manchester-based individuals.

Bolton Mediation's advanced training course Transforming Workplace Conflict

2.1 North Manchester FM - Community Radio Training
Training starts at the end of October. Training will be 2 hours a week for 8
weeks, leading up to a month-long broadcast starting on Mon 14th Jan.

Sat 20th October to Sun 4th November
One hundred and thirty three events involving five hundred performers. A two
week festival which includes a full programme of Art, Comedy, Community,
Dance, Music, Sport and Theatre. Includes a special children's sports week

Royal Mills is a regeneration of four cotton spinning mills, dating back to

The BBC Manchester Mentor Project aims to encourage young people in Greater

Training starts at the end of October. Training will be 2 hours a week for 8

1.4 Health Inequalities Pool
The next meeting of the Health Inequalities Pool will be on the 1st November
2007, 10am until 12pm at the MACC office. They will be agreeing community
and voluntary sector representation via the Pool on the new Adults Health &
Wellbeing Board, which will meet in the next couple of months, receiving
updates on Food Futures Collaborative Funding opportunities as well as
contributing local perspectives on North West indicators for Wellbeing.

3.2 Invitation to FREE art event and forum - on the theme of childbirth
Are you a grandmother, mum or a mum-to-be? Are you a dad who watched your
child come into the world? Do you have strong opinions about the way
childbirth is managed, at home or in hospital?
Come and participate in the debate, or just eat and reflect, as part of the
diverse audience at Matrix. Matrix is an evening forum and banquet on
Saturday 27th October 2007, 4.30pm -10pm at Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road,
Manchester.
Art will ignite conversations about childbirth between individuals who would
otherwise never have crossed paths. The audience will be seated in the
ladies' third class swimming pool. During the evening, the artists and
childbirth practitioners involved in the Birth Rites collaborations will be
giving presentations, offering insights into their experiences of exposure
to one another's practice over the course of this year.
The presentations will be followed by an aphrodisiac-themed banquet at which
the conversations about art and childbirth will continue. Artist Kara Ramsey
will collaborate with Birth Rites team and Beliz catering company to bring
about a sensuous gourmet art installation.

1.3 Community Network for Manchester Review - 30th October 2007
You may be aware that the Community Network for Manchester is currently
conducting a review (facilitated by the Exec.)
The review will seek to ensure we have the right systems and structures in
place to meet future challenges. It will be a way for all staff, strategy
group and the wider voluntary/community sector participants to set the
direction - to give the Exec its mandate. It is a chance to put forward your
ideas for how we can grow and develop.

1.4 Health Inequalities Pool
The next meeting of the Health Inequalities Pool will be on the 1st November
2007, 10am until 12pm at the MACC office. They will be agreeing community
and voluntary sector representation via the Pool on the new Adults Health &
Wellbeing Board, which will meet in the next couple of months, receiving
updates on Food Futures Collaborative Funding opportunities as well as
contributing local perspectives on North West indicators for Wellbeing.

Innovation and Social Enterprise Schools Conference, - Urbis, 14th November

Social enterprises from across Greater Manchester are invited to apply for
subsidised creativity and innovation training, PLUS free exhibition space to
30 schools at Urbis.
Creativity and innovation training will introduce a range of practical tools
and techniques for you to practice on the day and explore their application
to your situation. The specialised training day will be delivered by the
Management Centre at the Enterprise Factory in Oldham.

2.2 Tender Processes and Bid Preparation Training
Throughout October to December, NAVCA have arranged regional small group
training sessions in tender processes and bid preparation.
Sessions are limited to 20 attendees in each venue so everyone can get the

2.3 Listening to Other Training Sessions
Listening to Others organise regular workshops that enable 'others' to
communicate. They aim to break down barriers and increase understanding;
verbalising our own experiences through stories; representing many cultural
and diverse backgrounds.
In each facilitated workshop, participants work through a series of stories
(personal accounts, shared histories, faith tales, fables) linked to the
workshop theme.

3.2 Invitation to FREE art event and forum - on the theme of childbirth
Are you a grandmother, mum or a mum-to-be? Are you a dad who watched your
child come into the world? Do you have strong opinions about the way
childbirth is managed, at home or in hospital?
Come and participate in the debate, or just eat and reflect, as part of the
diverse audience at Matrix. Matrix is an evening forum and banquet on
Saturday 27th October 2007, 4.30pm -10pm at Victoria Baths, Hathersage Road,
Manchester.
Art will ignite conversations about childbirth between individuals who would
otherwise never have crossed paths. The audience will be seated in the
ladies' third class swimming pool. During the evening, the artists and
childbirth practitioners involved in the Birth Rites collaborations will be
giving presentations, offering insights into their experiences of exposure
to one another's practice over the course of this year.
The presentations will be followed by an aphrodisiac-themed banquet at which
the conversations about art and childbirth will continue. Artist Kara Ramsey
will collaborate with Birth Rites team and Beliz catering company to bring
about a sensuous gourmet art installation.

3.3 Bogus Callers Awareness Event
There is good reason for each of us to be concerned about bogus callers but
how do you protect yourself against them? The answer might be around the
corner at the Hall Lane Resource Centre on Hall Lane in Baguley on the 26th
October.
They are hosting a Bogus Caller Awareness event 1.30pm until 2.45pm.

3.4 Good Governance Conference
GMCVO is holding a conference on 'Good Governance' on Monday 26th November,
which will address key issues in developing effective governance on
voluntary sector boards and management committees. There will be
presentations on what makes good governance and the impact of the new
Charities Act on governance, as well as workshops, a case study, and panel
discussion. The event is aimed at trustees and managers from VCS
organisations with responsibility for governance support.

4.1 Connecting Communities Plus - Community Grant
Round 3 of Connecting Communities Plus, Community Grants is open. The grants
scheme welcomes applications from small, locally run and managed voluntary
and community organisations, often run by volunteers, who want to improve
opportunities for people locally and to improve relations between people of
different ethnic and/or faith backgrounds.
They are running a number of free briefing events to give people more

4.2 Evaluation of the National Programme for Third Sector Commissioning
Shared Intelligence has been commissioned by the Improvement and Development
Agency (IDeA) to carry out an evaluation of the National Programme for Third
Sector Commissioning.
The survey will give third sector organisations the chance to let them know
your views on commissioning and what can be done to overcome some of the
barriers that currently exist.

4.3 Attitudes to the Delivery of Public Services by VCS Organisations
Manchester University are carrying out a survey on attitudes to the issue of
delivery of public services by Voluntary and Community Sector organisations
in the North West.
The Institute for Political and Economic Governance (IPEG) is carrying out
the research, funded by the North West Improvement Network, which is made
up of the 46 local authorities in the North West. This is a really good
opportunity for organisations to feed back their opinions on this important
agenda to local government and other audiences.
An event is planned for January 2008 where all respondents will be invited
to debate the research.
