1.1 Strategy Group Meeting- important date change
In order for important papers to be prepared and considered fully the
Executive have agreed to postpone the Strategy Group meeting due to be held
on Tuesday 26th Feb 2008 to Tuesday 18th March 2008.
Due to room shortages at Green Fish Resource Centre the meeting will be held
at Cross Street Chapel (Manchester M2 1NL) at the usual time (5.30- 8.00
pm).

1.2 Action Forum on Academies - Thursday 28th February 2008
If you are interested in Academies and what is happening in your area this
is an opportunity to have your say. The forum is for Voluntary and Community
Sector groups and organisations. The aim of the forum is to review levels of
community engagement in the recent consultation and explore ways to enable
community involvement in the future.

1.3 Community Safety Network (CSN) Re-launch event
The Community Safety Network is changing. Over the past 6-years, the CSN has
worked hard to get your views heard at a statutory level. However, this
process has not always been as effective as they would have liked.
The CSN would like to invite you to their last ever conference where they
will be unveiling their new look delivery plan and showing you how they are
ready to campaign for big changes.
The day will focus on 'Promoting The Vision', a first-hand briefing on 'The
New CDRP Strategy' and an explanation as to how 'Community Call For Action'
can work for you.
Plus.... by way of a thank you to everyone for supporting CSN over the last
6-years, there will be a Champagne and Chocolates finale- a great
opportunity to network and share the way forward.

2.1 Change Makers- Training Leaders for Action
Please note that the dates/ times of this event were incorrectly advertised
in last week's bulletin (15.02.08) and have now been amended.
The training is an introduction to a way of campaigning which helps
strengthen your organisation and gains recognition and dignity for you and
your faith community.
This training is for those: wanting to play a more active role in their
community group, school, congregation, or union; keen to develop their
leadership skills and those of others; interested in understanding how to
make an organisation more effective and inclusive; inquisitive about who
makes the decisions which impact on our lives, our families, our
organisations and how we can influence those decisions; eager to learn
better 'people' skills and how to work as a team; willing to work for the
things they believe in.
You will learn: new leadership techniques; how to connect your faith and
values to practical action; the role that power and self-interest have in
holding a group together and in making the world work.

2.2 A Wider Embrace: ICT & The Arts - Free Regional Seminars
Workshop One: Is your art or craft group missing out? More and more art and
craft groups are using the web and computers to help their group and promote
themselves - is your group missing out? This FREE introductory workshop
will guide you through the opportunities available to your group.
Workshop Two: Developing IT within your art and craft group. Masterclass
exploring topics e.g. Web 2.0 and specialist software packages guiding you
through the opportunities available to develop your IT capabilities.
The events are primarily aimed at voluntary arts groups but are relevant to
anyone involved in voluntary arts provision (national umbrella bodies,
voluntary arts organisations, local authority arts officers, Arts Council
staff, policy makers, consultants etc).

3.2 International Youth Work Seminar North West
Do you work with young people and are you interested in international youth
work? Are you experienced in organising international youth work projects or
thinking about starting? Are you keen to find out more about what's
involved? Do you want to learn about the European Youth Programme - 'Youth
in Action'? Are you committed to young peoples' participation and youth led
projects?

organised by the North West Regional Youth Work Unit. The seminar is

Launch Event
Wythenshawe FM are a community radio station presented entirely by members
of the community who volunteer their time.
Calling all young people 16-18 currently not in education, employment or

to promote your style to other people? Passionate about Wythenshawe...want
to have a voice in your community? Just want to get involved in something
unique and exciting? This is the experience for you!

3.4 Crown Prosecution Service Community Focus Event in partnership
with MCCR
Crown Prosecution Service in partnership with Manchester Council for
Community Relations (MCCR) invites you to a joint "Community Focus Event"
hosted by Khan Moghul.
The main objectives for this event are: To raise community understanding and
awareness of CPS Greater Manchester commitment to the handling and
prosecution of crime; To identify key issues which impact on community
confidence in the handling and prosecution of Crime; To consult the
community on how to engage with the wider community to raise public
confidence in the criminal justice system.

3.5 Public Rail Seminar- Manchester Town Hall
Local rail passengers are being given the chance to discuss developments on
the train network at a public meeting...
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority (GMPTA) is holding a
seminar to discuss the latest situation on the region's railways.
Representatives from Northern Rail, First TransPennine Express, Arriva Cross
Country, Network Rail, GMPTE and the Friends of Eccles Rail Station will be
giving presentations on various aspects of the region's railways and their
plans for the future.

3.6 Manchester's Vision- The Journey So Far- 15th March 2008
The fourth Manchester Partnership conference will be held on Saturday March
15, 2008. The event is open to everyone who lives, works, enjoys, or has an
interest in Manchester.
The day will be packed full of information and entertainment, but there will
be a core of activity between 1.00pm and 2.00pm. In the auditorium,
Manchester Partnership will bring people up to date with work achieved so
far in relation to their objectives as stated in the Community Strategy.
There will be a performance from young people who have developed the Moss
Side Manifesto, a short film from young people on their hopes and dreams as
they grow up in Manchester, and Olympic sprint gold medallist Darren
Campbell from Manchester will speak about having goals and realising dreams.
This will be followed by a quiz session during which the audience of 800
will answer questions about their views and feelings about life in
Manchester. Interactive multi-answer responders will be on every seat and
the aim is to develop information that can be related to Local Area
Agreement (LAA) targets.

4.3 Charities Unite to Support Switch to Digital TV
A groundbreaking initiative bringing together three of the UK's leading
charities to support Granada TV viewers through the switch to digital
television has recently been announced. Digital UK, the independent body
co-ordinating the digital TV switchover, will fund the £2.9m scheme to help
ensure viewers are prepared when analogue television services are switched
off in the Granada TV region next year. The scheme will also operate in
three other TV regions: Border, West Country and Wales.
The new organisation, Digital Outreach, brings together Age Concern England,
Help the Aged, Community Services Volunteers and Collective Enterprises
Limited, a company specialising in working with the charity sector. It will
commission a range of support services from local and regional voluntary
sector organisations and charities. The programme will offer help to those
not eligible for the Digital Switchover Help Scheme, established to provide
equipment and assistance to those aged 75 and over, and disabled viewers. It
will focus on groups including older people, those with sensory, mobility or
dexterity impairments, people with learning difficulties and those that are
socially isolated.

4.4 Free volunteers from the Department of Work and Pensions! No
catch!- 'DWP Community 5000'
The Department of Work and Pensions want to know more about their customers
and are committed to learning how they might serve them better. They want to
make a real difference on behalf of charities and voluntary groups.
Could your charity or voluntary community organisation benefit from DWP
volunteers' support? If so, they'd like to work with you. They comment:
"We're looking to build links with community partners for projects that our
people can participate in as part of our commitment to the communities we
serve"
They are particularly interested in organisations who support priority
customer groups including: Health problems or Disabilities; Lone Parents;
Ethnic Minorities; Older People of Working Age; Refugees;
Offenders/Ex-offenders; Homeless; Young people.
They can provide individual volunteers for a day and in some cases several

4.5 North Manchester International Day Planning Meeting
Northwards Housing, who manage north Manchester's council housing, is
planning an international food and dance day. This event will celebrate the
diversity of cultures of Northwards residents, and the communities in which
they live. Northwards is also aiming to reach out to BME communities to
establish new contacts, consult and promote opportunities for involvement in
decision making to improve representation.
Northwards Housing would like to plan this event with representatives of the
north Manchester community. They are planning to hold the first steering
group meeting 10-11.30am, Tuesday 26th February, in the Community Room at
the Cheetham Hill Local Services Office, 549 Cheetham Hill Road, M8 9NW.
Following that they anticipate monthly meetings March-April, and fortnightly
in May (though this will be up to the steering group to decide) with the
international day taking place during May half term.
Northwards tenants, those who live in north Manchester, or represent
communities which are present in the Northwards area (Cheetham, Crumpsall,
Higher Blackley, Charlestown, Moston, Harpurhey, Newton Heath & Miles
Platting and Ancoats and Clayton) would be welcome, and their contribution
would be valued. If daytime meetings are inconvenient for you, but you would

5.3 Tender Opportunity- Needs Assessment and Delivery of Food Safety
and Hygiene Level 2 and Health and Safety Level 2 in community languages
This project has arisen as a result of a need identified by the
Environmental Health Team at Tameside Council.
The Workplace Health Improvement Coordinator has worked closely with the
Environmental Health and Food Safety officers in finding ways of broadening
access to services for ethnic minority run businesses in the ward. One means
of achieving this would be to deliver subsidised courses in community
languages as well as English. The most popular community languages used most
in St. Peter's ward are: Urdu, Gujarati, Bangla, Polish, French, Farsi and
Chinese.
