2.2 Public Contract Opportunities - A New Approach: training. The country's leading tendering and procurement training organisation for the third and small business sectors TfC won the contract to deliver procurement training to these sectors for up-coming DWP programmes. The programme will offer a series of training events throughout the UK (including Manchester) during June 2008. The events are designed to help organisations and businesses to tender or sub-contract effectively for public sector contracts. There will be an emphasis on the development of supply chains designed to allow smaller organisations to contribute to the delivery of services. The training will focus in particular on helping organisations to engage in programmes managed by the Department for Work and Pensions such as Flexible New Deal. 2.3 Working with Offenders- Free training session for staff /volunteers. Do you work in adult education or support work? Want to find out more about the issues facing service users who are offenders under supervision in the community? This professional development training session is run by local charity NEARIS which specialises in education for offenders and other disadvantaged adults in the community. The course will cover: introduction to the criminal justice system; managing risk; models of change and motivation; and an overview of services available in Greater Manchester.
The half day session is repeated on 3 dates across May-July: 27 May (Bolton), 5 June (Manchester), 1 July (Manchester).

2.4 Introduction to Photoshop course- Manchester Women's Electronic Village Hall. The course should allow you to qualify for the eDCC beginner's certificate in image editing. It is due to run for 3 consecutive Mondays: 16th 23rd and 30th June, from 9.30 am to 3.00. The course fee is £100.00 per person.

2.5 Urban Veg Production: Tools, Techniques and Theory course. A one-day course looking at veg growing in an urban context. The need for more local and regionalised food systems of low energy inputs is becoming very apparent. The UK is densely populated and relatively urbanised, sympathetic to the idea of local food and soon to need it. The course will examine the background to this and draw on the organisers' experiences growing and trading from their Sale site. This will cover topics including: plant raising, tools and equipment, site selection, seasonality, marketing, composting and fertility sources. The course may suit those considering commercial vegetable production, professionals looking at sustainable urban policy, larger allotment producers and those concerned by UK food security issues. Price: £45 (includes lunch).

2.6 Employer Supported Volunteering Workshop. Volunteer Centre Warrington is delivering a one day Employer Supported Volunteering workshop. This is a brand new training module from the Excellence in Volunteer Management programme from Volunteering England. The workshop will enable learners to engage employers and employer supported volunteers effectively in the work of their organisation. Cost: £99.00 per person

3.1 Refugee Week 2008. Taking place across the whole of the month of June, Manchester's Refugee Week programme of events and activities provides: an opportunity to meet people from all of Manchester's diverse communities; a celebration of Manchester's proud tradition of offering safety, support and sanctuary; a chance to understand why refugees come to Manchester. Most events are free, so bring your friends and family and enjoy Manchester's vibrant culture.

3.2 Tony Wilson Experience- workshops and conversations. The Tony Wilson Experience is a chance for young, talented people with an interest in the creative arts to take part in a non-stop, 24 hour series of workshops and conversations with some of the biggest names from the music industry, art and design, broadcasting, writing, photography and film. Names already confirmed include Steve Coogan, Peter Hook, Stuart Maconie, and many more. Staged in memory of the late broadcaster and cultural entrepreneur, Anthony H Wilson, and supported by Manchester City Council, the event will be inspirational, challenging, and at times experimental.

3.3 North West Participation Workers 4th Annual Conference. The provisional programme includes speakers Nigel Burke (GONW) and Nicky Horn, Regional manager (CWDC), and presentations on: Wecan2 project (Young people led research into barriers to local participation structures for young people with a learning disability - Paul Smithson), Youth Engagement Research (Dan Moxon, NWRYWU & young people from Liverpool Engagement Team), CROA/NYAS (Members of NYAS YP Advisory Group will show a DVD produced by looked after children and YP and talk about how the DVD can help reassure Children & Young People entering the care system). 3.4 Manchester Local Involvement Network (LINk) Launch Event. The Manchester Local Involvement Network (LINk) is a network bringing together local people, organizations and groups who want to improve health and social care services in the city. The LINk's main job will be to: Find out what people want; Investigate issues that people raise; Use its statutory powers, when needed, to hold services to account. You are invited to go along and tell them what you want from the NHS and Social Care services. If you can't make the afternoon, you can arrive at 5 pm for some food- the programme will be run in the evening also.

3.5 Carers Week 2008. The countdown to this year's Carers Week 2008 event is well and truly underway. It is the biggest partnership event of the year to showcase carers' services in Manchester. For one day only, carers and professionals alike can find out all they need to know about all things 'carer' under one roof. Last year attracted over 400 people, many of whom were new carers who were introduced to a new world of support and information.

3.6 Cultivating Communities Conference- advance notice. 'Cultivating Communities' is a Regional Conference showcasing the best of community led environmental initiatives and partnership projects in Salford and across the North West. A host of inspirational workshops will explore good practice in developing the Cleaner and Greener agenda in local communities. This Conference is the Annual Conference of Northwest Together We Can and is being organised by the Seedley and Langworthy Trust, Salford City Council Neighbourhood Management and is supported by Community Northwest, Guide Neighbourhoods, Manchester Metropolitan University and others to be confirmed.

3.7 Feast! Picnic by the Lake. Giant picnic event round the lakeside with live entertainment. All welcome- all weekend! You bring the picnic (plus decorations, costumes, lanterns and candles), and entertainment from around the world will be provided (as well as several thousand picnic tables and chairs). Non-stop music, street theatre, dance, strolling performers, activities and games. Many different styles of food available to buy. The event is FREE.

3.8 Walk Against Homophobia in Manchester. The Lesbian and Gay Foundation are holding Manchester's first ever walk against homophobia on Saturday 24th May.
This event is open to everyone to get involved and ensure that Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Trans voices are heard! Bring your friends and family and help 'End Homophobia and Empower People'

3.9 The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment A Reality In Every Community. On the 19th October 2007, the Department for Communities and Local Government produced an action plan to increase community empowerment. 'An Action Plan for Community Empowerment: Building on Success' highlights what can be done to build on the examples from around the country of local authority best practice in community empowerment. "The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment a Reality in Every Community" will examine how authorities will be given increasingly greater control over their communities. 4.1 LSEN Informal Adult Learning Consultation Meeting. The DIUS (Department for Innovation, Universities, and Skills) is at present carrying out a consultation on the future role of Informal Adult Learning through it's consultation paper "Informal Adult Learning - Shaping the Way ahead". The Learning, Skills and Employment Network would like to invite a wide range of organisations from different sectors (Museums and Galleries, Libraries, Social Housing providers, Valuing Older People, Health Organisations, Universities) to send representatives along to the meeting on the 29th May so that a collective response to this consultation can be gathered. 4.2 Neighbourhood policing teams launch in hundreds of towns. Every household across the country now has a dedicated neighbourhood policing team, helping police understand the problems of each specific town. Neighbourhood policing teams will work within their communities to understand local priorities - whether that's tackling anti-social behaviour, addressing problems caused by drug use, or stopping alcohol-related crime. Later this year the government will introduce a new policing pledge. It will set a national standard of what people can expect from their local neighbourhood policing team, while also allowing each team to build on that in order to deal with local problems. By drawing up these local policing pledges, residents will have a real say over how their streets are policed. This new approach is part of a wider reform of policing in England and Wales, and coincides with the start of new public service agreements setting out the government's clear commitment to focus on local priorities, while also tackling serious crime that affects the whole country.
4.3 Connecting neighbourhoods. A new forum around the concept of connecting neighbourhoods using digital technologies has been set up by DC10plus, a local authority-led social inclusion body. Connecting Neighbourhoods Forum is for the private sector, voluntary and academic stakeholders to collaborate, discuss and produce strategies and solutions.

4.4 AGMA: Greater Manchester Grants Scheme- applications for one off funding. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) considers applications for One Off grants of up to £10,000 from the voluntary sector whose services cover most of Greater Manchester. Funding is available for projects in the areas of culture (in its broadest sense), education and young people, social and community cohesion, economic development and job creation. Applicants must be properly constituted voluntary sector organisations and provide a countywide service to Greater Manchester. The next deadline for receipt of applications is 31 July 2008 for consideration on 14 November 2008, then 31 October 2008 for consideration in February 2009. 4.5 Food Re-Distribution Network to Launch in Manchester. Fareshare, the nationwide food re-distribution network, is due to start its Manchester operation in June. Fareshare is now looking for suitable beneficiary groups to receive foodstuffs from them. The only criteria for groups in need of assistance with food costs, is that the food donated by Fareshare must be prepared and served on the donor organisations premises. Every year many thousands of tonnes of food are wasted for commercial reasons, much of which ultimately goes to landfill. Fareshare, in conjunction with its Manchester partner company, Emerge Recycling is actively trying to bridge the gaps between sources of food surplus and groups supporting the vulnerable and needy. 4.6 Food Futures Local Food Fund Survey. Food Futures is a partnership that aims to create a culture of good, healthy food in Manchester, with affordable fresh food at the heart of local communities. Increased local production and distribution of food is a core part of their strategy. The BIG Lottery Local Food Fund has recently opened and will distribute grants to a variety of food related projects with the overall aim of making locally grown food more accessible. Food Futures is investigating possibilities for using funding from the Local Food Fund to support and extend their work with the community and voluntary sector. This survey is being circulated primarily to organisations and projects that are part of the Food Futures network. Even if your group has had no prior contact, Food Futures would welcome your responses to the survey, if you work or plan to work on issues relating to food in Manchester. 4.7 The Big Splash! As of 1st June 2008 any Manchester resident aged sixty or over will be entitled to free swimming at any Manchester pool, including the Aquatics Centre. The scheme is a partnership between Manchester City Council, Manchester Primary Care Trust and Serco. It will initially run for 1 year and the aim is to increase the number of people over 60 in the city that swim regularly as part of the Healthy Ageing Strategy. Older people should now be able to access information about the passes from local pools.
4.8 Volunteer Opportunities- Manchester Pride 2008 - Big Weekend. Manchester Pride is appealing for volunteers to help out behind the scenes at their 18th birthday - the biggest party of the summer - 22-25th August 2008 (Fri-Mon).
They're looking for people from all backgrounds to help them showcase Manchester to festival goers arriving in the city from across the UK and Europe. Volunteers will have the chance to learn new skills, meet lots of great people and contribute to one of Manchester's biggest annual events. All volunteers will need the: Ability to work on own initiative; Ability to work under supervision; Ability to work outdoors; And will need to be Reliable, Hardworking, Enthusiastic, Friendly and Trustworthy. 3.2 Tony Wilson Experience- workshops and conversations. The Tony Wilson Experience is a chance for young, talented people with an interest in the creative arts to take part in a non-stop, 24 hour series of workshops and conversations with some of the biggest names from the music industry, art and design, broadcasting, writing, photography and film. The Manchester Local Involvement Network (LINk) is a network bringing together local people, organizations and groups who want to improve health and social care services in the city. The LINk's main job will be to: Find out what people want; Investigate issues that people raise; Use its statutory powers, when needed, to hold services to account. You are invited to go along and tell them what you want from the NHS and Social Care services. 3.5 Carers Week 2008. The countdown to this year's Carers Week 2008 event is well and truly underway. It is the biggest partnership event of the year to showcase carers' services in Manchester. For one day only, carers and professionals alike can find out all they need to know about all things 'carer' under one roof. Last year attracted over 400 people, many of whom were new carers who were introduced to a new world of support and information.

On the 19th October 2007, the Department for Communities and Local Government produced an action plan to increase community empowerment. The DIUS (Department for Innovation, Universities, and Skills) is at present carrying out a consultation on the future role of Informal Adult Learning through it's consultation paper "Informal Adult Learning - Shaping the Way ahead". 4.2 Neighbourhood policing teams launch in hundreds of towns. Every household across the country now has a dedicated neighbourhood policing team, helping police understand the problems of each specific town. Neighbourhood policing teams will work within their communities to understand local priorities - whether that's tackling anti-social behaviour, addressing problems caused by drug use, or stopping alcohol-related crime. Later this year the government will introduce a new policing pledge. It will set a national standard of what people can expect from their local neighbourhood policing team, while also allowing each team to build on that in order to deal with local problems. By drawing up these local policing pledges, residents will have a real say over how their streets are policed. This new approach is part of a wider reform of policing in England and Wales, and coincides with the start of new public service agreements setting out the government's clear commitment to focus on local priorities, while also tackling serious crime that affects the whole country.
4.3 Connecting neighbourhoods. A new forum around the concept of connecting neighbourhoods using digital technologies has been set up by DC10plus, a local authority-led social inclusion body. Connecting Neighbourhoods Forum is for the private sector, voluntary and academic stakeholders to collaborate, discuss and produce strategies and solutions.

4.4 AGMA: Greater Manchester Grants Scheme- applications for one off funding. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) considers applications for One Off grants of up to £10,000 from the voluntary sector whose services cover most of Greater Manchester. Funding is available for projects in the areas of culture (in its broadest sense), education and young people, social and community cohesion, economic development and job creation. Applicants must be properly constituted voluntary sector organisations and provide a countywide service to Greater Manchester. The next deadline for receipt of applications is 31 July 2008 for consideration on 14 November 2008, then 31 October 2008 for consideration in February 2009. 4.5 Food Re-Distribution Network to Launch in Manchester. Fareshare, the nationwide food re-distribution network, is due to start its Manchester operation in June. Fareshare is now looking for suitable beneficiary groups to receive foodstuffs from them. The only criteria for groups in need of assistance with food costs, is that the food donated by Fareshare must be prepared and served on the donor organisations premises. Every year many thousands of tonnes of food are wasted for commercial reasons, much of which ultimately goes to landfill. Fareshare, in conjunction with its Manchester partner company, Emerge Recycling is actively trying to bridge the gaps between sources of food surplus and groups supporting the vulnerable and needy. 4.6 Food Futures Local Food Fund Survey. Food Futures is a partnership that aims to create a culture of good, healthy food in Manchester, with affordable fresh food at the heart of local communities. Increased local production and distribution of food is a core part of their strategy. The BIG Lottery Local Food Fund has recently opened and will distribute grants to a variety of food related projects with the overall aim of making locally grown food more accessible. Food Futures is investigating possibilities for using funding from the Local Food Fund to support and extend their work with the community and voluntary sector. This survey is being circulated primarily to organisations and projects that are part of the Food Futures network. Even if your group has had no prior contact, Food Futures would welcome your responses to the survey, if you work or plan to work on issues relating to food in Manchester. 4.7 The Big Splash! As of 1st June 2008 any Manchester resident aged sixty or over will be entitled to free swimming at any Manchester pool, including the Aquatics Centre. The scheme is a partnership between Manchester City Council, Manchester Primary Care Trust and Serco. It will initially run for 1 year and the aim is to increase the number of people over 60 in the city that swim regularly as part of the Healthy Ageing Strategy. Older people should now be able to access information about the passes from local pools.
4.8 Volunteer Opportunities- Manchester Pride 2008 - Big Weekend. Manchester Pride is appealing for volunteers to help out behind the scenes at their 18th birthday - the biggest party of the summer - 22-25th August 2008 (Fri-Mon).
They're looking for people from all backgrounds to help them showcase Manchester to festival goers arriving in the city from across the UK and Europe. Volunteers will have the chance to learn new skills, meet lots of great people and contribute to one of Manchester's biggest annual events. 2.3 Working with Offenders- Free training session for staff /volunteers. Do you work in adult education or support work? Want to find out more about the issues facing service users who are offenders under supervision in the community? This professional development training session is run by local charity NEARIS which specialises in education for offenders and other disadvantaged adults in the community. The course will cover: introduction to the criminal justice system; managing risk; models of change and motivation; and an overview of services available in Greater Manchester.

2.5 Urban Veg Production: Tools, Techniques and Theory course. A one-day course looking at veg growing in an urban context. The need for more local and regionalised food systems of low energy inputs is becoming very apparent. The UK is densely populated and relatively urbanised, sympathetic to the idea of local food and soon to need it. The course will examine the background to this and draw on the organisers' experiences growing and trading from their Sale site. 3.5 Carers Week 2008. The countdown to this year's Carers Week 2008 event is well and truly underway. It is the biggest partnership event of the year to showcase carers' services in Manchester. For one day only, carers and professionals alike can find out all they need to know about all things 'carer' under one roof. Last year attracted over 400 people, many of whom were new carers who were introduced to a new world of support and information.

3.6 Cultivating Communities Conference- advance notice. 'Cultivating Communities' is a Regional Conference showcasing the best of community led environmental initiatives and partnership projects in Salford and across the North West. A host of inspirational workshops will explore good practice in developing the Cleaner and Greener agenda in local communities. This Conference is the Annual Conference of Northwest Together We Can and is being organised by the Seedley and Langworthy Trust, Salford City Council Neighbourhood Management and is supported by Community Northwest, Guide Neighbourhoods, Manchester Metropolitan University and others to be confirmed.

3.7 Feast! Picnic by the Lake. Giant picnic event round the lakeside with live entertainment. All welcome- all weekend! You bring the picnic (plus decorations, costumes, lanterns and candles), and entertainment from around the world will be provided (as well as several thousand picnic tables and chairs). Non-stop music, street theatre, dance, strolling performers, activities and games. Many different styles of food available to buy. The event is FREE.

3.8 Walk Against Homophobia in Manchester. The Lesbian and Gay Foundation are holding Manchester's first ever walk against homophobia on Saturday 24th May.

3.9 The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment A Reality In Every Community. On the 19th October 2007, the Department for Communities and Local Government produced an action plan to increase community empowerment. 'An Action Plan for Community Empowerment: Building on Success' highlights what can be done to build on the examples from around the country of local authority best practice in community empowerment. "The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment a Reality in Every Community" will examine how authorities will be given increasingly greater control over their communities. 4.1 LSEN Informal Adult Learning Consultation Meeting. The DIUS (Department for Innovation, Universities, and Skills) is at present carrying out a consultation on the future role of Informal Adult Learning through it's consultation paper "Informal Adult Learning - Shaping the Way ahead". The Learning, Skills and Employment Network would like to invite a wide range of organisations from different sectors (Museums and Galleries, Libraries, Social Housing providers, Valuing Older People, Health Organisations, Universities) to send representatives along to the meeting on the 29th May so that a collective response to this consultation can be gathered. 4.2 Neighbourhood policing teams launch in hundreds of towns. Every household across the country now has a dedicated neighbourhood policing team, helping police understand the problems of each specific town. Neighbourhood policing teams will work within their communities to understand local priorities - whether that's tackling anti-social behaviour, addressing problems caused by drug use, or stopping alcohol-related crime. Later this year the government will introduce a new policing pledge. It will set a national standard of what people can expect from their local neighbourhood policing team, while also allowing each team to build on that in order to deal with local problems. By drawing up these local policing pledges, residents will have a real say over how their streets are policed. This new approach is part of a wider reform of policing in England and Wales, and coincides with the start of new public service agreements setting out the government's clear commitment to focus on local priorities, while also tackling serious crime that affects the whole country.
4.3 Connecting neighbourhoods. A new forum around the concept of connecting neighbourhoods using digital technologies has been set up by DC10plus, a local authority-led social inclusion body. Connecting Neighbourhoods Forum is for the private sector, voluntary and academic stakeholders to collaborate, discuss and produce strategies and solutions.

4.4 AGMA: Greater Manchester Grants Scheme- applications for one off funding. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) considers applications for One Off grants of up to £10,000 from the voluntary sector whose services cover most of Greater Manchester. Funding is available for projects in the areas of culture (in its broadest sense), education and young people, social and community cohesion, economic development and job creation. Applicants must be properly constituted voluntary sector organisations and provide a countywide service to Greater Manchester. The next deadline for receipt of applications is 31 July 2008 for consideration on 14 November 2008, then 31 October 2008 for consideration in February 2009. 4.5 Food Re-Distribution Network to Launch in Manchester. Fareshare, the nationwide food re-distribution network, is due to start its Manchester operation in June. Fareshare is now looking for suitable beneficiary groups to receive foodstuffs from them. The only criteria for groups in need of assistance with food costs, is that the food donated by Fareshare must be prepared and served on the donor organisations premises. Every year many thousands of tonnes of food are wasted for commercial reasons, much of which ultimately goes to landfill. Fareshare, in conjunction with its Manchester partner company, Emerge Recycling is actively trying to bridge the gaps between sources of food surplus and groups supporting the vulnerable and needy. 4.6 Food Futures Local Food Fund Survey. Food Futures is a partnership that aims to create a culture of good, healthy food in Manchester, with affordable fresh food at the heart of local communities. Increased local production and distribution of food is a core part of their strategy. The BIG Lottery Local Food Fund has recently opened and will distribute grants to a variety of food related projects with the overall aim of making locally grown food more accessible. Food Futures is investigating possibilities for using funding from the Local Food Fund to support and extend their work with the community and voluntary sector. This survey is being circulated primarily to organisations and projects that are part of the Food Futures network. Even if your group has had no prior contact, Food Futures would welcome your responses to the survey, if you work or plan to work on issues relating to food in Manchester. 4.7 The Big Splash! As of 1st June 2008 any Manchester resident aged sixty or over will be entitled to free swimming at any Manchester pool, including the Aquatics Centre. The scheme is a partnership between Manchester City Council, Manchester Primary Care Trust and Serco. It will initially run for 1 year and the aim is to increase the number of people over 60 in the city that swim regularly as part of the Healthy Ageing Strategy. Older people should now be able to access information about the passes from local pools.
4.8 Volunteer Opportunities- Manchester Pride 2008 - Big Weekend. Manchester Pride is appealing for volunteers to help out behind the scenes at their 18th birthday - the biggest party of the summer - 22-25th August 2008 (Fri-Mon).
They're looking for people from all backgrounds to help them showcase Manchester to festival goers arriving in the city from across the UK and Europe. Volunteers will have the chance to learn new skills, meet lots of great people and contribute to one of Manchester's biggest annual events. All volunteers will need the: Ability to work on own initiative; Ability to work under supervision; Ability to work outdoors; And will need to be Reliable, Hardworking, Enthusiastic, Friendly and Trustworthy.
