2.2 Working with Offenders- Free training session for staff /volunteers. Do you work in adult education or support work? Want to find out more about the issues facing service users who are offenders under supervision in the community? This professional development training session is run by local charity NEARIS which specialises in education for offenders and other disadvantaged adults in the community. The course will cover: introduction to the criminal justice system; managing risk; models of change and motivation; and an overview of services available in Greater Manchester.

2.3 Working with ex-offenders - Free training. City College Manchester is currently offering free (ESF funded) training to all who work with offenders - or who are thinking of doing so - looking at areas such as the changes brought about by the Criminal Justice Act 2003 (CJ03) with Community Sentences and Indeterminate Sentences for Public Protection. The aim of the course is to provide staff and volunteers, who have little or no experience of the Criminal Justice System, with a basic awareness of the issues around working with offenders. 2.4 Employer Supported Volunteering Workshop. Volunteer Centre Warrington is delivering a one day Employer Supported Volunteering workshop. This is a brand new training module from the Excellence in Volunteer Management programme from Volunteering England. The workshop will enable learners to engage employers and employer supported volunteers effectively in the work of their organisation. Cost: £99.00 per person

2.5 Free training- Capacity Building. As part of their Capacity Building project, South Manchester Regeneration Team are providing free training to voluntary and community groups this summer. The training sessions will cover: Effective work planning; Fundraising; Supervision and appraisal of staff; Business planning. The sessions will be facilitated by their consultant Jonny Wineberg and are open to all community and voluntary groups providing services to the community in south and central Manchester. 3.1 Launch event - vinvolved, Greater Manchester Youth Network. vinvolved is the new national youth volunteering programme that is being delivered across England by vinvolved teams in each authority. The Manchester vinvolved team are holding a lunch and launch event and would like to invite you or a representative from your organisation to attend. The event will start with lunch and a chance to network, followed by some short presentations by the team to introduce the programme and explain how organisations in Manchester can benefit from working with the team to either create volunteer opportunities for young people or refer young people who are interested in volunteering.

3.2 Diversity and Networking Seminar North West: Involving Ethnic Minority Communities in Co-operatives and Social Enterprises. This event provides the opportunity to learn about developments in the co-operative and social enterprise sectors and how ethnic minority communities can be better involved. The event will also discuss ideas for solutions, case examples and make recommendations for Government and Co-operatives UK on ways of supporting the involvement of ethnic minority communities.

3.3 Climate Strategies Day - Manchester Climate Forum. Concerned about and/or have unanswered questions about climate change? Any thoughts about what Manchester should be doing about it? 3.4 Presenting Contemporary Slavery Seminar. North West Global Education Network and Global Link Development Education Centre invite you to a Presenting Contemporary Slavery Seminar. In 2007 we commemorated the bicentenary of the abolition of the Slave Trade Act. However, slavery still exists in many forms throughout the world. This event is aimed both at global education providers and museum practitioners: it aims to encourage partnership working to improve the material and resources offered to teachers to help them cover this important but often difficult topic in their schools. Cost: £10 per person, including vegetarian lunch and refreshments.

3.5 Bury Transport Debate. With the exception of the Metrolink, Bury seems to be losing out on transport- e.g the loss of X35 and X85 services, and the Beeching cuts of the 1960s meant that rail links to Bolton, Rawtenstall and Rochdale were lost. At the same time, proposals have emerged to restore some of these links. What should be done to improve transport in Bury. Here is your chance to have your say. The event is free and open to all. 3.6 Cultivating Communities Conference - The Green and Clean agenda. Cultivating Communities is the Annual Conference of North West Together We Can, organised in conjunction with the Seedley and Langworthy Trust, and Salford City Council. The Conference will be showcasing the best of community-led environmental initiatives and partnership projects in Salford and across the North West. This is a free event, but there will be a £30 non-attendance fee. Places are limited to two people per organisation.

3.9 Free VCS Crime Forum. FAO residents of South Manchester. Do you have a problem with crime in your neighbourhood? Community Safety Network (CSN) are the voluntary/community sector representative on the Crime and Disorder Partnership and can help you tackle your local community safety needs. 3.10 Free Social Enterprise Education and the Global Dimension conference. The aims of the event are to: Explain how (social) enterprise education supports the Global Dimension, and how GD strengthens enterprise education; Showcase case-studies and activities run successfully by participants; Explain what else the Global Dimension supports (e.g. key skills, citizenship, Every Child Matters, etc); Discuss challenges and successes in delivering enterprise & GD education; Cover how to run these activities in your own region; Plan for a NWGEN (North West Global Education Network) event for 2009. Speakers are welcome to run 15 - 30 minute workshops based around teaching the Global Dimension through (social) enterprise education.

3.11 North West Participation Workers 4th Annual Conference. The provisional programme includes speakers Nigel Burke (GONW) and Nicky Horn, Regional manager (CWDC), and presentations on: Wecan2 project (Young people led research into barriers to local participation structures for young people with a learning disability - Paul Smithson), and Youth Engagement Research. Music South Manchester Regeneration and Northmoor Methodist Church would like to invite you join them at three Music of Our Streets Festival events taking place in June 2008. 4.1 Get Walking Keep Walking. Get Walking Keep Walking is an exciting new urban walking project developed by The Ramblers Association to increase regular independent walking among previously inactive or insufficiently active people in deprived parts of Manchester. 4.3 A competition for local community groups in Manchester: Pitch Your Project, is looking for organisations that benefit the health, wellbeing and fitness of their community with the support of volunteers. Whether it's running a sports club, befriending scheme, or patient support group, if the project has a great idea for making a difference with volunteers, they could win £2000 cash when they present their project and ideas to a panel of experts. Five shortlisted projects will be given £250 to develop a plan for using volunteers, as well as receiving face to face advice from a panel of experts in communications, design, health and volunteering. Pitch Your Project is run by TimeBank in partnership with the NHS Foundation Trust Network and is looking for innovative and effective ways in which volunteers can support the delivery of health and wellbeing services. 4.5 The Peter Kershaw Trust is seeking applications for the Peter Kershaw Memorial Bursary. Peter Kershaw, the ex-chairman of Joseph Holt brewery, who died in 2000, set up his trust partly to benefit disadvantaged young people. To commemorate him, the Trustees established a bursary to fund the costs of a youth leader. Organisations with charitable status in Greater Manchester are invited to apply for the bursary, which will be awarded on the basis of up £25,000 for year 1, £15,000 for year 2 and £10,000 for year 3. Priority will be given to organisations that can show a firm shared element of funding beyond year 1 and where the appointment creates new opportunities. Deadline for applications: 30th September 2008.
Applications should be made in writing to the Secretary (22 Ashworth Park, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 9DE). The application should take the form of a short reasoned statement and be accompanied by a detailed budget for the proposal and a copy of the latest audited accounts.
4.6 ALL FM/ Barclays Community Awards. Are you a Manchester based community project or charity that requires a little financial help? What could you do with £500? ALL FM and Barclays have joined forces for the second year running to bring the Community Awards to Manchester. They want to reward some of the good work and vital services you provide to your community by offering you the chance to receive a £500 cash grant to support your project. 4.7 AGMA: Greater Manchester Grants Scheme- applications for one off funding. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) considers applications for one off grants of up to £10,000 from the voluntary sector whose services cover most of Greater Manchester. Funding is available for projects in the areas of culture (in its broadest sense), education and young people, social and community cohesion, economic development and job creation. Applicants must be properly constituted voluntary sector organisations and provide a countywide service to Greater Manchester. The next deadline for receipt of applications is 31st July 2008 for consideration on 14th November 2008, then 31st October 2008 for consideration in February 2009. 5.7 Advice Worker - Voluntary Action Manchester. Salary: £21,412 - £22,845 (NJC Scale: 6 pts 26 - 28). Voluntary Action Manchester (VAM) has been funded by The National Lottery through Big Lottery Fund to create our new Phoenix Project, which will offer support, training and guidance to meet the needs of medium and large voluntary sector organisations across the city. Cheetham Hill Advice Centre is a CLS Quality Marked and OISC registered advice centre offering a full range of legal advice. In addition to their core advice service they run an accredited volunteer programme, disseminate good practice in volunteering to other groups, run a money advice and financial literacy project, and support the running of a Welcome Centre for newcomers to the area.
