1.0 Network News
1.1 Network Support. We are planning a series of workshops for network members on a range of issues. The first of these workshops will look at general good practice in relation to redundancy. This workshop is for both employers and employees.
The workshop will include the opportunity for one-to-one sessions with a specialist legal advisor from Direct Law and Personnel (DLP), and information from a union perspective.

1.2 Manchester's Service User Network for Homeless People (SUN) Annual General Meeting. The focus of the event is to provide information, share best practice and to enable providers and service users to discuss the development of Homeless Service User involvement within Manchester.

2.0 Training
2.1 Volunteers and the Law - Free seminar. Volunteering Manchester, in partnership with the Manchester Institute of Sport & Physical Activity (MISPA), has organised a second free seminar for organisations working with volunteers. 'Volunteers and the Law' will be held in a Central Manchester venue on Friday 19th September 2008 (from 9.45am-4pm). Places at the seminar are limited and will be allocated on a first come first served basis using the following criteria: Local, independent voluntary organisations and groups; Organisations based and working in the Manchester City area; Organisations operating in the Manchester City area.

2.2 Digitall - Volunteering, Mentoring and Free Training. Digitall is a volunteering project that matches young people with those aged 45 and over who want help to get started using digital technology. If you are aged 16-25 and are interested in helping an older person to learn about the internet and email, and would like to earn a Certificate in Mentoring, or if you are over 45 and would like some free 1-1 tuition, come along to the Digitall workshops on Saturday mornings from 10am - 12pm at Ada House this summer. 2.3 Inspiring Leaders in Salford - FREE Leadership and Management seminar programme. MISPA (Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) has designed an exciting new Seminar Programme for voluntary and community groups involved in sport, health and/or physical activity (or intending to be) working in Salford (particularly Eccles). The Seminar Programme will help you identify leadership and management skills that will enable you to be more effective in your role and to have a measurable impact in your organisation. The Seminar Programme uses practical "real life" situations with limited theory and it is anticipated that participants will be selected from a range of backgrounds, interests and abilities.
The closing date for the first round of applications is 22nd August 2008, but you are advised to return your completed application as soon as possible. Potential participants will be invited to an interview.

3.1 Ensemble French Supplementary School Open Day. Activities will include: la Jolie ronde French for children taster classes, handball demonstration, African drums, bouncy castle, face painting, healthy food & drink, arts & crafts workshops.

3.2 The Family Friendly Film Festival. Returning to Manchester for the third year, The Family Friendly Film Festival is yet again showcasing some of the best in family film from around the world, taking you to some of the best Family Friendly venues the city has to offer, and giving you the opportunity to get involved in some fantastic filmmaking workshops and exclusive events. With over 45 events over ten days, the Festival is the biggest family event of the summer.
The festival will run until Sunday 17 August 2008

3.3 Manchester Volunteering Day. Come along and see what's on offer. Manchester Youth Volunteering Project (MYVP) and Manchester Event Volunteers (MEV), along with other partners are working towards the creation of Manchester Volunteering Day which will act as a showcase and celebration of volunteering in the City. Approximately 70 organisations will come along on the day to promote their volunteering opportunities to you and there will be CV workshops as well as information, advice and guidance.

4.1 Infrastructure support services questionnaire. Manchester City Council has produced a questionnaire to gather information about the infrastructure support services being used by Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations and identify where there may be gaps in provision. The questionnaire can be found at: http://www.manchester.gov.uk/scarman
The information provided will be used to inform the next commissioning process to invite tenders for this work.

4.2 Targeting Wellbeing in the North West. Thursday 31st July saw the launch in Manchester of Target: Wellbeing, a major new regional portfolio of activity aimed at improving wellbeing in the region's most disadvantaged communities. Lead by a partnership including third sector organisations, local PCT's and local authorities, it is managed by Groundwork Northwest and funded by £8.9m from the BIG Lottery Fund's wellbeing programme. 4.3 Community Foundation for Greater Manchester - New Pot of Community Cash up for Grabs in Manchester. Do you run a community or voluntary group in Manchester? If so then help could be at hand from the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester through a brand new pot of money called the Grassroots Fund.
The Community Foundation is now accepting applications for the Grassroots Fund, which was set up by the government's Office for the Third Sector to support small voluntary and community groups across the country.

4.4 Voluntary Action Manchester Launches New BASIS Project. VAM is establishing a new development project for voluntary organisations with income over £50,000, supported with funding from the National Lottery BASIS programme. There will be a range of services for medium to large voluntary organisations. These will include advice, information, training and workshops on issues such as funding, sustainability, outcomes, organisational development, commissioning and tendering. A new website and newsletter will be available from late September with relevant information for the sector.
The official project launch will be at the start of October. Invites will be sent out soon. In the following months staff hope to be in contact with as many organisations that could benefit from the project as possible.

4.5 Consultations:
1. Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations. The Department for Transport is seeking input on: Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations.
The Local Transport Bill includes measures to promote more effective partnership working between local authorities and bus operators, including through voluntary partnership agreements and quality partnership schemes. The Department has published a consultation on the draft Guidance which it is proposing to issue, and drafts of Regulations which it is proposing to make, assuming the Bill receives Royal Assent.

2. Housing Reform Green Paper - E-Forum. The Chartered Institute of Housing, in partnership with Communities and Local Government, have launched an E-forum where you can debate the challenges facing rented housing and what reforms you feel should be undertaken to address them. The forum will help feed into and shape proposals to be put forward in a housing reform green paper to be published later in the year.
The Forum can be accessed at: http://housingreform.cih.co.uk/. Over the coming months the forum will begin to launch separate discussions on specific policy issues in the run up to the Housing Reform Green Paper.
3. Time to Train Consultation. The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills is consulting on a new statutory right allowing employees to request time off for training that would benefit them and the employer.
The consultation seeks views on proposals to give employees in England a right to a serious conversation with their employer about their skills development. This new right would help encourage and support adults to develop their skills and rise as far as their talent will take them.

4. Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) Consultation. Your opportunity to comment on proposals for improvements to public transport and a weekday peak-time only congestion charge in Greater Manchester.
The Government has recently agreed in principle a package of local transport initiatives for Greater Manchester worth up to £3 billion for delivery over the coming years. 5.4 EMERGE Recycling - two posts. EMERGE Recycling is a fast growing and dynamic Manchester-based social enterprise that exists to promote the practice of the 3Rs of waste reduction.
