Reminder from the Executive Group - Community Network for Manchester Strategy Group meeting and Executive Group Elections

The Community Network for Manchester Executive Group would like to remind network members that elections to the Executive Group will take place at the next Strategy Group meeting on Tuesday 10th March.

If your network wishes to nominate a member, or if you would like to recommend a potential co-optee, please fill in the registration form (which will be available on the website from the 24th February), and return it to Chiara Mallia no later than Monday 9th March.

During this meeting, the nomination forms for network participants to the Community Network for Manchester Strategy Group will also be approved. To renew the nomination for your existing network participant, or to make a new nomination, please fill in the nomination form (which will be available on the website from the 24th February), and return it to Estelle Worthington no later than Monday 9th March.

Free training for artists & community groups organised by Artsnet and Community Arts North West

Artsnet and Community Arts North West are offering free training on Health & Safety awareness for artists & community groups.

LSEN Partnership Meeting

The Learning Skills and Employment Network (LSEN) is working with a number of partners across the City to deliver a co-operative learning event entitled: “Better Together – A co-operative approach to the delivery of Community Based Learning - engaging, empowering and enriching communities”.

Participants will collectively identify the benefits this type of learning can have, how we can measure its impact and then use this knowledge to build effective learning journeys through to practical cross-sectoral projects delivered at a district level.

Community Safety Forum Meeting – Central Manchester

Date/ Time: Thursday 19th February 2009, 5:30pm - 7:30pm

Community Safety Network (CSN) crime forums are designed to help voluntary/community sector groups respond to local crime and disorder based concerns. The issues raised will be directed to the Manchester’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. Local Inspectors and Community Safety Co-ordinators review the information you tell them about and provide feedback, so you know what actions have been taken.

Manchester Accessible Acupuncture - Clinic space required
Manchester Accessible Acupuncture is a new social enterprise setting up a low cost acupuncture clinic in the Manchester area. They aim to improve the health of individuals who are ill and wish to access acupuncture, but are unable to do so due to the high cost of treatment.

They are looking for clinic space:

Approximately 340sq foot (32sq meters), big enough for around 6 couches with screens separating them for privacy;
It must meet health and safety standards. A washable floor and a sink are essential;
Be used solely for work of a similar health and safety standard;
A small room, or cornered off area of the clinic for initial consultations.

Funding Opportunity - Futurebuilders Small Organisation Tender Fund

This is a new £220,000 grant fund to help small voluntary organisations tender for public sector contracts. Organisations can receive grants worth up to 10% of the value of the contract (max £15,000). To be eligible organisations must have been trading for one year and have a turnover of less than £250,000.

Funding Opportunity - Esmée Fairbairn Foundation Main Fund

The Esmée Fairbairn Foundation aims to improve the quality of life throughout the UK. They do this through funding charitable activities of organisations that have the ideas and ability to achieve change for the better and support work that is considered difficult to fund. The average grant is around £50,000 and can be used for core costs or project costs.

Their primary interests are the UK’s cultural life; education; the natural environment and enabling people who are disadvantaged to participate more fully in society.

Ardwick Heritage Guided Walks

An experienced Blue Badge Guide will lead the first of the family-friendly walks, taking in hidden, and not so hidden, sites of cultural, historical and architectural significance in Ardwick.

The walks are funded by Manchester City Council's South Manchester Regeneration Team.

Then come and join our FREE exciting programme where you can learn more about benefits and services that may be available. Then you can tell people in your community what’s available.

These information programmes are for anyone living or working in East Manchester and are absolutely FREE.

The programme takes place one day a week for up to 12 weeks (see below). Each week someone from a different service or organisation will come and talk about the help they can offer to older people, or we will go and visit them. The programme includes sessions on disability benefits, debt, health services and carers support. The training is FREE, lunch provided and fare money paid.

So come and join this informative programme, make new friends and help your friends, neighbours, relatives and clients.

Manchester Refugee Support Network's Advice Service is organising two free training days for Refugee Community Organisations in the coming weeks:

Asylum Support

The Asylum Support Appeals Project (ASAP) will be giving training on asylum support, looking particularly at difficulties some asylum seekers are having with Section 4. RCOs should register with ASAP in advance for this training on 020 8686 1888.

Tax Credits and Child Benefit

Tax Credits can make a real difference to families' income but they can seem complicated and confusing to many people. Common problems can often be avoided if you know what to do. Book in advance with MRSN on 0161 232 7420.

Free NW Planning Aid Sustainability Training

Have Your Say on the Future of Volunteering in Manchester

A consultation event for Volunteer Co-ordinators and organisations that work with volunteers will take place at Cross Street Chapel (Cross Street, Manchester) on Thursday 5th February from 2:00pm - 4:30pm.

The event is part of the work commissioned by Community Network for Manchester to identify ways to develop the infrastructure in Manchester to support volunteering across the city. This work is being overseen by a steering group consisting of representatives of the volunteering community in Manchester.

Community Fund

Community Fund is a new initiative from the Home Office to support small voluntary and community organisations who can demonstrate successful approaches to tackling the issues of guns, gangs or knives among young people and those particularly at risk of involvement in serious violence.

The Community Fund is open to voluntary and community organisations with activities located in the Tackling Knives Action Programme (TKAP) police force areas - which includes Greater Manchester. The total fund available is £4.5m - organisations can apply for grant funding of up to £10,000 per year for three years.

It is aimed at young people age 25 years or younger and activity should be around mentoring, outreach or education and/or support for siblings/parents/families of high risk young people.

Government must provide £100Million package to safeguard the work of voluntary and community sector

It is estimated that the Government must provide a minimum of £100M to ensure that essential support and services provided by voluntary and community organisations (VCOs) are able to survive in the short term, according to the leading sector umbrella organisation.

The National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) said the package would include support in terms of loans and grants; a recession health check; for collaboration and mergers; an innovation fund; community assets fund; new financial instruments; employment support; and a resource to understand the on-going impact of the recession.

Reaching Out seeks to empower Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) people to become better informed and more resistant to the harms caused by drugs and alcohol.
Their network of trainers are delivering FREE drugs & alcohol Awareness Sessions in Black Minority Ethnic communities across Manchester in various languages. See below for further details and session dates.

RIES (Refugee Integration and Employment Service) is a Home Office funded programme, providing support to refugees when they are first granted permission to stay in the UK.

Refugee Action has the contract to deliver RIES in the North West and is subcontracting MRSN to deliver a volunteer advocacy service as part of RIES.

You will need an understanding of refugees’ support needs and the transition from asylum seeker to refugee, and to be aware of the role advocacy and volunteers can play in this. Refugees are strongly encouraged to apply.

A schools volunteering opportunity with Action for Sustainable Living

Action for Sustainable Living has an educational programme called A Few Small Steps that helps primary schools to reduce their environmental impacts by considering their energy use, waste and recycling practices, food culture and more.

They have a team of 15 volunteers who help to deliver this and are currently recruiting for another team to work with them from February to July in five schools in Hulme. This is a five month commitment and they would expect you to contribute four hours per week by attending training, developing resources with them and working in schools.

If you would like to know more, they are having a no obligation School Volunteer Induction session on Monday Feb 2nd between 6pm and 8pm. To confirm your place please email jess.buck@afsl.org.uk.

Mental Health of Children & Young People - Free Introductory Training Programme

The Child and Adolescent Mental Health Multi Agency Training Programme is run by a group which consists of professionals from specialist mental health and children's services and voluntary sector and education services.

It has been developed to suit frontline workers from all establishments. The training consists of a one day introductory course which is later followed by a programme of workshops looking at more specialised topics.

Bored with a cold January, looking for something to do? Art Exhibition Launch next week

I don’t know about community networks. But I know what I like…
Exhibition Launch on Thursday 15th January 11:00am - 4:00pm at Manchester Town Hall.
The Exhibition will run from 12 – 25 January 2009, at various venues and times. All are welcome to view the exhibition.
Seven North West based contemporary artists examine and respond to the themes, environments, structures and networks of community and voluntary engagement in Manchester.
Viewing the exhibition takes you on a treasure hunt to see the art via some of Manchester’s diverse centres of community activity.
I don’t know about community networks, but I know what I like… was initiated as an art research project by Alison Kershaw during time spent with Culture Pool of Community Network for Manchester.

Help black and minority ethnic groups with their strategy

Do you want to help frontline BME organisations become more successful and sustainable?
You could become one of 25 ‘strategy champions’, receiving free training and support, and £4,000 to help BME organisations to develop stronger strategies.
Beyond Survival: the BME Strategy Programme is an exciting new initiative run by brap and NCVO. It is now recruiting ‘champions’ to attend eight training sessions in Birmingham or London between April 2009 and May 2010, and then support five frontline BME organisations to develop their own strategic planning skills.

The Greater Merseyside ChangeUp Consortium, in partnership with Sefton CVS, as the lead body, seeks to appoint a highly skilled and motivated candidate to lead the development of the new and exciting Tendering and Procurement Support (TaPS) project for Greater Merseyside.
TaPS will provide voluntary and community organisations with a ‘one-stop-shop’ for advice, information and support on all aspects of commissioning. The project will also provide a mechanism by which the voluntary and community sector can productively engage with public sector commissioners.

Pitch Your Project - Chance to win funding for organisations that benefit the health, wellbeing and fitness of their community.

TV Dragon wants you to Pitch Your Project!

James Caan, entrepreneur and 'dragon' on BBC 2's Dragons' Den is backing a competition for local community groups in Greater Manchester.
The Dragons' Den style scheme, Pitch Your Project, is looking for organisations that benefit the health, wellbeing and fitness of their community with the support of volunteers.

Whether it's running a sports club, befriending scheme, or patient support group, if the project has a great idea for making a difference with volunteers, they could win £2000 cash when they present their project and ideas to a panel of experts.
Five shortlisted projects will be given £250 to develop a plan for
using volunteers, as well as receiving face to face advice from a
panel of experts in communications, design, health and volunteering.
Pitch Your Project is run by TimeBank in partnership with the NHS
Foundation Trust Network and is looking for innovative and effective ways in which volunteers can support the delivery of health and wellbeing services.

Mapping Creativity Project - vote on who should receive the £25k commission

Through the Mapping Creativity Project, Manchester Beacon aims to commission an interactive project that drives Manchester's collective creativity.
The commissioned project will use disruptive, open source or social technologies to aggregate and maximise Manchester’s resources.
It will facilitate better communication between two or more social groups and provide tools to visualise this interaction.
The project will be co-designed with its users.
Three finalists received £1,000 to develop their ideas further before pitching for the final £25k commission. They took part in a pitching session on the 30th October. Each pitch was filmed and is available for you to comment and vote on.

VSNW survey to assess impact of economic downturn on debt advice services in the North West

VSNW (Voluntary Sector North West), on behalf of the Joint Economic Commission for the North West, is assessing the impact of the economic downturn on debt advice services in the North West.

The Commission was set up to support families, businesses and communities in dealing with the current economic downturn.
VSNW aims to discover what debt counselling services exist, the current levels of need and the demands being placed on services.
They will also look at possible solutions and actions that could support debt advice and related services in the North West.

National Voices/ Royal College of Nursing survey - Local Healthcare Commissioning: The Patient's Perspective

This survey is being jointly conducted by National Voices (a new umbrella organisation established by and for the voluntary sector) and the Royal College of Nursing.

This survey is one of the first efforts to discover whether patients and the public really are involved in the government's local commissioning initiatives.
The survey hopes to explore the attitudes of patient groups (and other relevant voluntary groups) to local commissioning in primary care. The intention is to identify mechanisms by which commissioning processes can be improved from the patients' perspective.

The survey comprises 16 questions and takes no more than 10-15 minutes to complete.
National Voices and the RCN are interested in your organisation's views even if you have not been directly involved in any form of local healthcare commissioning.
Closing date: Monday 15th December 2008.

Understanding your rights and the work of the Refugee & Migrant Forum Manchester

Come and meet members of the Refugee & Migrant Forum Manchester to find out what we are doing to defend the rights of asylum seekers and refugees in Greater Manchester and how you can get involved.
There will be a FREE one hour training about UK Border Agency guidelines for the detention process, bail applications and fresh claims, with questions and answers with a solicitor from the Greater Manchester Immigration Aid Unit.
Travel expenses will be paid by MRSN. Buses 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 109 from Piccadilly Gardens all go past the St. James Centre. Get off the bus at the second stop after the brewery & the big ASDA on Princess Rd.
(The solicitor will not be able to give advice on individual cases. Forum members can provide contact details of immigration advisors in Greater Manchester).

'Improving East Manchester: A Place Where People Want To Live' Workshop

Date/ Time: Friday 5 December 2008, 10am – 12.00 noon (followed by a light lunch).

You are invited to come along and find out more about the work that is being carried out in East Manchester to improve the quality of life of residents.
The brief workshop will involve input from experts working in the field. It's also a great opportunity to discuss some of the problems faced by people living in East Manchester with colleagues from a range of services.

This is not just for those who work in regeneration or who work in East Manchester. Come along if you:
- Deliver customer-facing services in East Manchester and need to develop better links with colleagues from other services.
- Have a role in planning and managing services within East Manchester and need to understand the broader aims of the community strategy and the work of key partnerships.
- Provide a support service and need to understand how you can improve that support to front line staff.
- Have a city wide remit and need to better understand front line delivery of services that meet the needs of neighbourhoods in Manchester.

Equality and Human Rights Commission consultation on future plans

The Equality and Human Rights Commission is currently consulting on it's Strategic Plan, Equality Scheme and Grants Programme.
They are developing their three-year strategic plan and equality scheme, both of which will be published in April 2009. They are also looking at ways in which they can shape their grants programme in line with their strategic priorities.

Manchester Local Involvement Network - electing new Steering Group members

The Manchester LINk is in the process of electing a new Steering Group to lead its work.
The closing date for submitting nominations for the Steering Group was 21st November and interested individuals and organisations were asked to commit to 3-4 hours per week and attend monthly meetings.
If you would like to be involved in the voting process for the Steering Group you will need to be a member of the Manchester LINk. Individual members need to reside in the city of Manchester, and group members need to be part of a voluntary group or commercial organisation that operates in the city of Manchester.
Timetable:
5th December – ballot papers sent to LINk members by email and post
19th December – closing date for completed ballot papers to be received
22nd December – vote count by external independent adjudicator
23rd December – people to be notified of outcome of ballot

Manchester's Black and Minority Ethnic funding strategy 2009-2012

Manchester City Council has now launched a three year funding programme for BME community and voluntary organisations in Manchester for 2009 - 2012.
The funding priorities for Manchester City Council are based on identified community needs and service gaps highlighted by research prepared by Manchester Council for Community Relations (MCCR) and Manchester City Council in June 2008.
To be considered for a grant, you have to meet one or more of the funding priorities. Further information about these priorities can be found in part two of the application form (see below).
Applications must be returned on or before Monday 15 December 2008.

Free Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Service in East Manchester

A FREE computerised cognitive behavioural therapy (cCBT) service is now available at East City Library in Openshaw every Tuesday from 2.30pm to 6.30pm.

cCBT offers a new way of helping people to cope with anxiety and depression, and it also helps people to remain well. cCBT helps people to understand the causes and symptoms of anxiety and depression and it also helps them to identify and change unhelpful ways of thinking and to learn more effective ways of solving their problems. The programme consists of an introductory video and 8 sixty-minute sessions.
There is no charge for this service and you are not required to have any computer experience; you only need to be able to click a mouse and type in a few words which our support workers can help with if necessary. The programme can also be used by people who have concerns about their literacy as each session is provided verbally through headphones.

New Equalities Programme Launched by MCCR

MCCR (Manchester Council for Community Relations) has launched a new Equalities programme supported by funding from the Equality and Human Rights Commission.
It will bring together VCS interest groups and organisations, that have not traditionally worked together, to promote equalities in services and employment. It will also work directly with public service providers.
The programme focuses on understanding the new Single Equalites Bill and Equality & Human Rights Commission and how they can be used to promote equalities.
It will offer a series of open workshops, a small number of short model consultancies, using a new Equalites Assessment Guide, and a concluding Equalities conference.

FREE seminar in Manchester: BAMER/Faith Strand Mini-Seminar Series on Collaborative Working

NCB (National Children's Bureau) are running a series of free seminars for Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic and Refugee (BAMER) and faith-based voluntary and community sector (VCS) organisations on the theme of collaboration and partnership.
The programme has been developed following feedback from BAMER and faith-based organisations who identified collaboration and partnership as one of the main barriers to successful commissioning. The course will also offer the chance to meet colleagues, exchange experiences and share knowledge with others working in the children’s services field.
The first seminar will take place in Manchester on 3rd December.

George House Trust is the North West of England’s leading HIV charity. We aim to promote the best quality of life for people living with HIV. We are seeking a committed and experienced fundraiser and events organiser to lead and develop our Community Fundraising programme and raise the profile of George House Trust.
We are looking for an excellent communicator with the ability to build relationships with a variety of stakeholders, to help us increase our income through Community Fundraising and events.
George House Trust has a strong track record of Community Fundraising, in conjunction with organisations such as Manchester Pride and the Lesbian and Gay Foundation. We are keen to build new links with corporate and community organisations in areas where we have not traditionally worked.
You should also have experience of operating in a public facing, income generation role and of implementing fundraising strategies. Experience of events management and/or marketing would also be an advantage.

Fully Funded Volunteering Overseas Opportunities

Platform 2 is a fantastic opportunity for 18-25 year olds who wouldn’t be able to fund their own trip abroad, to go on a fully funded 10 week trip to a developing country to work on community led projects. When they come back they are trained to express their experience to their peers, community and contacts in whatever way they want. It is Government funded and run by Christian aid with BUNAC and Islamic Relief. The project is an opportunity to live and work in a poor community in a country like Ghana, South Africa, Peru or India.
Please remember that we have trips leaving every couple of months until December 2010.
If you would like more information about the project or would like to set up a meeting with me face to face please do get in touch. It would be great to talk to you more about this scheme. Flights, accommodation, living expenses, insurance etc. is all fully funded.

Participants will be selected from a range of backgrounds, interests and abilities.
The content is practical and you will be expected to actively participate, share your own experiences, debate, problem-solve and reflect. Tutors will be supportive, friendly and approachable.
