1.1 Communications Working Group
Members of the CN4M Communications Working Group are in the process of
updating the CN4M leaflet (yellow leaflet with network contact details). The
aim of updating the leaflet is to ensure that what CN4M is and does is easy
for people to understand.

2.0 Training
2.1 ALL FM Training
ALL FM are running a free course in 'Skills in Community Radio' where you
can learn how to plan, prepare and present your own radio programme.
The course is a series of ten three hour skill based workshops. They can
even pay your travel costs but you do need to be an East Manchester
Resident.

2.2 Offender Learning - Free training session for staff and volunteers
Manchester city centre on Thursday 2nd August - 1.30pm - 4.30pm
Work in adult education or training?
Want to learn more about the needs of offenders?
Want more background on the criminal justice system?
Interested in meeting other practitioners?
This free half day course is an opportunity to find out more about working
with offenders in relation to learning and skills. The course is run by
NEARIS, a charity which specialises in education for offenders and other
disadvantaged adults in Greater Manchester. The course will be held in
central Manchester.

Preparing for Inspection of ESF Projects

3.1 Asian Men's Group - Thursday 12th July 2pm - 4pm
The Roby in Longsight, Manchester have developed a men's group for the South
Asian male community in Manchester, over 50's. The Group will begin on
Thursday, 12th July at 2pm - 4pm, and will be based at The Roby.
The group aims to encourage South Asian men to address their mental/physical
needs by using preventative methods where possible. We hope to do this by
providing a range of therapeutic activities, an opportunity for individuals
to socialise and a place where individuals are able to share and express any
concerns and worries.
The service will be delivered in Urdu/Punjabi and English.

3.2 CSN Manchester Alcohol Strategy 2008-11 Consultation Event
Friday 13th July, 10am-3pm at The Manchester Conference Centre
Conference Overview: With nearly 7 million Britons drinking too much
alcohol, we're rapidly in danger of seeing an inevitable decline in the
nation's health, culture and levels of safety. Manchester has made
significant progress since the launch of its 2005 Alcohol Strategy; however
there is still work to be done if we are to tackle alcohol misuse.
Building on the foundations of existing partnership work, this consultation
event will bring together leading practitioners from across the city for a
genuine opportunity to contribute to the development of the Manchester
Alcohol Strategy 2008-11 and help inform local action.

4.2 ALL fm 96.9 is moving to East Manchester.
ALL fm 96.9 has now been broadcasting for five years to South, East and
Central Manchester. A radio station with a difference; broadcasting the
views, the opinions and the music of the community. It's vibrant,
multicultural and innovative. In short, it's the real voice of Manchester.
The music is a diverse play list with a distinctive, local slant. Chart,
Bhangra, Reggae, Irish, African, Hip Hop, Asian, Dance, Alternative, RnB,
Live Bands, World Music, Latin, Funk, Soul, Jazz and Manchester's finest.
ALL fm 96.9 is spreading its wings and setting up a new studio at the Mill
Street Venture Centre. We are looking for East Manchester residents to

4.3 Stop Smoking Service
Stop smoking Manchester provide cheap or free nicotine replacement therapy,
tips and advice to all smokers that want to quit.

4.4 IMPACT Awards
The IMPACT Awards are designed to recognise and reward charities that are
doing excellent work to improve people's health.
The Awards are open to registered charities that are at least three years
old, working in a health related field in the UK, with a total annual income
under £1 million.
Nine winners receive £25,000 and an overall winner receives £35,000. Up to
ten organisations that are highly commended or runners up receive £5,000 or
£3,000.

4.5 Futures
Futures, a TimeBank run volunteering project, has just launched in the
Greater Manchester area. The project promotes the benefits of volunteering
to individuals aged 25 + from BME communities living in the Greater
Manchester area.
Futures has a dedicated website where people can find out more about
volunteering and register their interest in becoming a volunteer along with
myself, I will actively place individuals into volunteering opportunities
suited to their interests, needs and goals. The Project Coordinator is on
hand to provide ongoing support to all volunteers throughout their time on
the project.

5.2 Digital Mentoring Project Co-ordinator
Salary: £23k per annum (35 hours / week) Location: Manchester
TimeBank is seeking a Project Co-ordinator to help deliver a unique
intergenerational digital mentoring project that we are running in
partnership with UK online centres. This is a pilot project aiming to match
'digital mentors' with 200 people to support them in their use of the
internet and other digital media.
The successful candidate will assist the Project Manager in designing and
developing the project and will play a key role in delivering it across
Greater Manchester.
The ideal candidate will have experience of providing training and support
to volunteers and will have strong administration and organisational skills.
They will need excellent communication skills and have a thorough working
knowledge of ICT.
These are full-time, fixed contract positions for an initial period of one
year, with the possibility of extension. The postholder will be based in
Manchester but will undertake regular travel around Greater Manchester.

1.1 Communications Working Group
One of the action points from the CN4M Away Day was to set up a
Communications Working Group to look at some of the following topics:
Making the network easier to understand
Using plain English; language that is fit for purpose
Setting up an induction and buddying system
Better communication within the Network
The first meeting of the working group will take place on Monday 9th July
from 10am - 12pm at the Greenfish Resource Centre. The meeting will be
primarily centred around determining the terms of reference of the working
group and how often the group should meet etc.

2.1 Learning Together - The Scarman Trust Manchester Workshops
Over the past months The Scarman Trust Manchester have talked to many groups
about the services they offer; based on what the groups said they are making
changes to their training programme.
For the next 6 months they are going to be running more 'Learning Together'
workshops tailor-made to groups' needs and a bit less of the structured
training. These will be shorter more informal relaxed sessions run by their
experienced development workers and other expert partners.

3.1 Respect Workshop
There are still a few places on the Respect Workshop on Friday 5th July at
Friends Meeting House, 10:15 -12pm (lunch included).
The meeting will be looking at Safer Neighbourhoods and putting into context
what is, how it affects us, and how we can get involved within the
structure. Lee Berry from Manchester City Council will be on hand to talk
through the topic in detail and answer any questions you may have.

3.2 Cross Cultural Perspectives in Mental Health
Eastern Pearl Conference Centre, Manchester on 5th September 2007 9:30 am -
4:30 pm
Mental health care in the UK is embedded in Western science and medicine,
which has historically been characterised by social exclusion and
inequality. Mental health and illness are socially and culturally
constructed. How appropriate is it to transfer western psychiatric diagnosis
and treatment models onto an increasingly diverse UK population? How can we
develop mental health services within both the voluntary and statutory
sector that respect different cultural understandings? How can we foster
closer working relationships between both sectors?
This conference will attempt to explore the diverse effects of culture and
society on mental health, mental illness, and mental health services. It
will also encourage the exchange of different perspectives, ideas and
practical suggestions to make our services more culturally competent.

The open day is taking place on Wednesday 4th July 2007 2pm - 7pm

3.5 Boggart Bikers Family Fun Day - Sunday 1 July - 1.00 - 4.00pm
A Family Fun Day with a difference taking place at Boggart Hole Clough.
Dust off your cycles (one wheel, two wheels, three or four - it does not
matter). Bring your cycle and the childrens and join in the fun.
There will be family races, and the Wheels for All Cycles will be available
for people with disabilities to join in the excitement as well. If your bike
has a puncture or needs new brake cables - do not worry - a group of
dedicated volunteers from Lakeside Cycles in Bury, have offered to carry out
minor repairs.
Refreshments will be available, as well as information stalls. You can even
enjoy a manicure for a donation to the NSPCC - books for children will be
available for purchase at very reasonable prices, as well as Kite Making and
the Wardens will be there with the electronic cars for all enthusiasts.

4.3 RNIB Campaign Alert - Recent ruling puts the sight of 20,000 people per
year at risk
A draft ruling by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
(NICE) means that four out of five patients with wet age-related macular
degeneration (AMD) - as many as 20,000 people - could be denied treatment to
save their sight each year.

4.4 Goldstar Good Practice
Volunteers from socially excluded groups can be a big help to any community.
GoldStar is a national, Cabinet Office funded programme for spreading good

4.5 Champions for Mental Health
The Strategic Health Authority are leading a piece of work across the NW to
promote awareness of mental health as a challenge and ask people to consider
what they can do within their lives and organisations to "champion" and
improve the mental health of their friends and colleagues.

4.5 Manchester : Peripheral
Manchester : Peripheral is a networked installation which remixes and
replays music, voices and ambient sound recorded in Moss Side, Levenshulme
and Ancoats & Clayton. Driven in real-time by votes from special control
kiosks in each ward, Manchester : Peripheral uses digital media to create a
continually evolving soundscape, plotting a new relationship between city
centre and its surrounding areas.

1.1 Communications Working Group
One of the action points from the CN4M Away Day was to set up a
Communications Working Group to look at some of the following topics:
Making the network easier to understand
Using plain English; language that is fit for purpose
Setting up an induction and buddying system
Better communication within the Network
The first meeting of the working group will take place on Monday 9th July
from 10am - 12pm at the Greenfish Resource Centre. The meeting will be
primarily centred around determining the terms of reference of the working
group and how often the group should meet etc.

2.1 Learning Together - The Scarman Trust Manchester Workshops
Over the past months The Scarman Trust Manchester have talked to many groups
about the services they offer; based on what the groups said they are making
changes to their training programme.
For the next 6 months they are going to be running more 'Learning Together'
workshops tailor-made to groups' needs and a bit less of the structured
training. These will be shorter more informal relaxed sessions run by their
experienced development workers and other expert partners.

3.1 Respect Workshop
There are still a few places on the Respect Workshop on Friday 5th July at
Friends Meeting House, 10:15 -12pm (lunch included).
The meeting will be looking at Safer Neighbourhoods and putting into context
what is, how it affects us, and how we can get involved within the
structure. Lee Berry from Manchester City Council will be on hand to talk
through the topic in detail and answer any questions you may have.

3.2 Cross Cultural Perspectives in Mental Health
Eastern Pearl Conference Centre, Manchester on 5th September 2007 9:30 am -

Mental health care in the UK is embedded in Western science and medicine,
which has historically been characterised by social exclusion and
inequality. Mental health and illness are socially and culturally
constructed. How appropriate is it to transfer western psychiatric diagnosis
and treatment models onto an increasingly diverse UK population? How can we
develop mental health services within both the voluntary and statutory
sector that respect different cultural understandings? How can we foster
closer working relationships between both sectors?
This conference will attempt to explore the diverse effects of culture and
society on mental health, mental illness, and mental health services. It
will also encourage the exchange of different perspectives, ideas and
practical suggestions to make our services more culturally competent.

3.5 Boggart Bikers Family Fun Day - Sunday 1 July - 1.00 - 4.00pm
A Family Fun Day with a difference taking place at Boggart Hole Clough.
Dust off your cycles (one wheel, two wheels, three or four - it does not
matter). Bring your cycle and the childrens and join in the fun.
There will be family races, and the Wheels for All Cycles will be available
for people with disabilities to join in the excitement as well. If your bike
has a puncture or needs new brake cables - do not worry - a group of
dedicated volunteers from Lakeside Cycles in Bury, have offered to carry out
minor repairs.
Refreshments will be available, as well as information stalls. You can even
enjoy a manicure for a donation to the NSPCC - books for children will be
available for purchase at very reasonable prices, as well as Kite Making and
the Wardens will be there with the electronic cars for all enthusiasts.

2.2 Business Bridge - Bringing Together Business Employees and Social
Entrepreneurs
Business Bridge is a series of 6 workshops bringing together Business
Employees and Social Entrepreneurs to share skills and experiences.
As part of HRH The Prince of Wales's Seeing is Believing programme, Business
in the Community has identified a specific set of developmental needs in the
social enterprise sector which it believes private sector business skills
can have a unique impact on.
The aim of this Business Bridge is to transfer business skills and expertise
to twelve social enterprises through a series of six workshops facilitated
by business leaders from respected employers. Each workshop will tackle key
business issues as identified by the social enterprises.
Business in the Community has developed this series of FREE seminars with
senior business leaders. This is offered to managers working in the social
enterprise sector who want to develop their skill base.

Stronger independence - Stronger relationships - Better outcomes
Compact Voice is calling on every area in England to take a practical step
on 4th July towards strengthening the local voluntary and community sector's
independence. All local sectors and councils are asked to do this together
because a more independent sector benefits councils and the community.
Communicating it and doing it
Sector infrastructure bodies and councils are asked to help get this message
out via websites, newsletters, joint press releases, and to network and
partnership meetings:
• 4th July is Local Sector Independence Day
• The Local Compact commits the Council to support the independence of local
groups
• We should all do something on 4th July to strengthen the sector's
independence.
Encourage local groups to discuss their independence at board level and make
their campaigning contribution visible on 4th July. Take opportunities to

4.2 The UK Voluntary Sector Almanac 2007
The 7th edition of the most comprehensive guide to the financial state of
the sector is now available. The Almanac has been compiled from a range of
different sources and brings together invaluable evidence on how the sector
is changing. The key findings from this year's edition include:
• The total income of the voluntary sector is £27.7 billion; operating
expenditure is £25.1 billion.
• The largest charities continue to grow, with smaller charities struggling
to maintain their income levels.
• Reports that dramatic increases in government funding to charities are
leading to a loss of independence appear to be unfounded - government
funding to the voluntary sector has only increased by 1.5% since 2001.
• The charity sector is becoming more efficient, with every £1 spent on
generating funds producing £11.34 in income, up by £2 since the previous
year.
• Charities' incomes are volatile, with over 10% of charities moving between
income bands in the past year.
Thus the sector continues to increase its income, and improvements to
efficiency mean charities are reaching more people than ever. However the
challenges presented by the economic and political environment are still
important, particularly for the smallest charities.
It is an invaluable reference tool for funders, policy-makers, researchers
and those working in the field. Fundraisers and charity managers will also
find the Almanac a vital resource in the preparation of funding bids.

4.3 Promoting ICT and Accessible Computing across the North West's Voluntary
and Community Sector
The National ChangeUp programme is currently funding two North West wide ICT
projects which are being hosted by GMCVO (Greater Manchester Centre for
Voluntary Organisation). Firstly the North West ICT Champion Project is
working across the North West until March 2008. The project aims to ensure
that infrastructure organisations, such as CVS', have a clear picture of
both ICT need and provision. The champion will be identifying gaps, making
use of best practice, conducting awareness raising and signposting to

4.4 Calling all carers!

need adopters and foster carers from all different cultural, ethnic and

and long-term foster carers, carers for asylum seeking children, supported
lodgings providers for young people over eighteen, adopters and short break
carers for disabled children.
We also need people who have the patience and understanding to care for and
support teenagers during what could be a difficult period in their life.

employed or unemployed. We will provide you with preparation, training,

2.2 Business Bridge - Bringing Together Business Employees and Social
Entrepreneurs
Business Bridge is a series of 6 workshops bringing together Business
Employees and Social Entrepreneurs to share skills and experiences.
As part of HRH The Prince of Wales's Seeing is Believing programme, Business
in the Community has identified a specific set of developmental needs in the
social enterprise sector which it believes private sector business skills
can have a unique impact on.
The aim of this Business Bridge is to transfer business skills and expertise
to twelve social enterprises through a series of six workshops facilitated
by business leaders from respected employers. Each workshop will tackle key
business issues as identified by the social enterprises.
Business in the Community has developed this series of FREE seminars with
senior business leaders. This is offered to managers working in the social
enterprise sector who want to develop their skill base.

Stronger independence - Stronger relationships - Better outcomes
Compact Voice is calling on every area in England to take a practical step
on 4th July towards strengthening the local voluntary and community sector's
independence. All local sectors and councils are asked to do this together
because a more independent sector benefits councils and the community.
Communicating it and doing it
Sector infrastructure bodies and councils are asked to help get this message
out via websites, newsletters, joint press releases, and to network and
partnership meetings:
• 4th July is Local Sector Independence Day
• The Local Compact commits the Council to support the independence of local
groups
• We should all do something on 4th July to strengthen the sector's
independence.
Encourage local groups to discuss their independence at board level and make
their campaigning contribution visible on 4th July. Take opportunities to
piggyback on what is already happening on 4th July, e.g. a Council Meeting
question; an agenda item on a partnership board; covering the Local Compact

on a possible bid to the Government for a £3 billion package of transport

4.2 The UK Voluntary Sector Almanac 2007
The 7th edition of the most comprehensive guide to the financial state of
the sector is now available. The Almanac has been compiled from a range of
different sources and brings together invaluable evidence on how the sector
is changing. The key findings from this year's edition include:
• The total income of the voluntary sector is £27.7 billion; operating
expenditure is £25.1 billion.
• The largest charities continue to grow, with smaller charities struggling
to maintain their income levels.
• Reports that dramatic increases in government funding to charities are
leading to a loss of independence appear to be unfounded - government
funding to the voluntary sector has only increased by 1.5% since 2001.
• The charity sector is becoming more efficient, with every £1 spent on
generating funds producing £11.34 in income, up by £2 since the previous
year.
• Charities' incomes are volatile, with over 10% of charities moving between
income bands in the past year.
Thus the sector continues to increase its income, and improvements to
efficiency mean charities are reaching more people than ever. However the
challenges presented by the economic and political environment are still
important, particularly for the smallest charities.
It is an invaluable reference tool for funders, policy-makers, researchers
and those working in the field. Fundraisers and charity managers will also
find the Almanac a vital resource in the preparation of funding bids.

4.3 Promoting ICT and Accessible Computing across the North West's Voluntary
and Community Sector
The National ChangeUp programme is currently funding two North West wide ICT
projects which are being hosted by GMCVO (Greater Manchester Centre for
Voluntary Organisation). Firstly the North West ICT Champion Project is
working across the North West until March 2008. The project aims to ensure
that infrastructure organisations, such as CVS', have a clear picture of
both ICT need and provision. The champion will be identifying gaps, making
use of best practice, conducting awareness raising and signposting to

2.3 An Introduction to Performance Improvement for Development Workers

This course will introduce monitoring and evaluation, quality assurance,
strategic planning and benchmarking and participants will have the chance to
consider when each of these approaches might be appropriate for the

2.4 Introduction to Intergenerational Practice workshops
This training is offered as part of ongoing work through Valuing Older
People and the Manchester Community Engagement Strategy. In the first
instance this introductory session is a half day training programme designed
for people interested in developing their understanding of intergenerational
work or working to broaden their knowledge of different types of
intergenerational projects.
The training will start with a brief overview of why intergenerational
practice is important and how it can be used as an approach to build
generational relationships and understanding. The training will illustrate
this by looking at a number of actual case studies across different areas
including the arts, raising achievement, community safety, environmental
projects and volunteering. The session will be interactive, encouraging
people to share their own experiences and thoughts.
Places will be limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served

4.1 Research Report - Social cohesion in diverse communities
This study explores relationships between new and established communities in
two ethnically diverse neighbourhoods, drawing on discussion groups and
one-to-one interviews with 60 ordinary residents from white British, Somali,
black Caribbean and multiple-heritage backgrounds.
The study used qualitative research methods in two ethnically diverse
neighbourhoods, Moss Side in Manchester and North Tottenham in North London
(Haringey) from March 2005 to February 2006, to explore residents'
experiences and relationships in depth.

4.2 The Community Champions Fund
The Community Champions Fund is now in its final year and we will have to
stop awarding grants by September 2007.
The Community Champions Fund aims to support individuals who are, or want to
be involved in, changing their communities for the better. The Fund is
designed to support individuals to develop personally whilst stimulating
community activity, or who have ideas for encouraging greater community
activity.
A grant of £2,000 is available to a Community Champion who wishes to
undertake a project.

4.4 Manchester's New Multi-lingual Carers Information
Six translators, including volunteers from Wai Yin, Himmat, Longsight/Moss
Side Community Project, and Manchester Mental Health and Social Care Trust,
came together to take Manchester forward in its aim to inform all carers of
the services that are available to support them.
The information allows non-English speakers to identify themselves as
carers, gives examples of services that they could be entitled to, and
provides essential facts regarding Carers Assessments.
Six of the most commonly spoken languages in the city have been recorded -
Urdu, Punjabi, Chinese, French, Arabic and Somali - giving access to
information to carers who do not speak English, and for whom language has
been a barrier preventing them from getting support services they need.
This project will be a focus point for Carers Week 2007 which takes place

This training will be taking place on 16th July 2007 from 9.30am - 4.00pm at

This course is aimed at front line workers who have limited experience of
working with young lesbian, gay and bisexual people. It will explore
homophobia and heterosexism and provide workers with practical strategies to

2.3 An Introduction to Performance Improvement for Development Workers
19th June Manchester
This course will introduce monitoring and evaluation, quality assurance,
strategic planning and benchmarking and participants will have the chance to
consider when each of these approaches might be appropriate for the
organisations they support. Information will be provided on services and
resources which mentors can signpost to.
Our one day courses are aimed at infrastructure workers in community,
voluntary and social enterprise organisations who may be new to their role
or have little knowledge of these performance topics.

2.4 Introduction to Intergenerational Practice workshops
This training is offered as part of ongoing work through Valuing Older
People and the Manchester Community Engagement Strategy. In the first
instance this introductory session is a half day training programme designed
for people interested in developing their understanding of intergenerational
work or working to broaden their knowledge of different types of
intergenerational projects.
The training will start with a brief overview of why intergenerational
practice is important and how it can be used as an approach to build
generational relationships and understanding. The training will illustrate
this by looking at a number of actual case studies across different areas
including the arts, raising achievement, community safety, environmental
projects and volunteering. The session will be interactive, encouraging
people to share their own experiences and thoughts.
Places will be limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served
basis. There will be 4 half day workshops run at Manchester Town Hall as

4.1 Research Report - Social cohesion in diverse communities
This study explores relationships between new and established communities in
two ethnically diverse neighbourhoods, drawing on discussion groups and
one-to-one interviews with 60 ordinary residents from white British, Somali,
black Caribbean and multiple-heritage backgrounds.
The study used qualitative research methods in two ethnically diverse
neighbourhoods, Moss Side in Manchester and North Tottenham in North London
(Haringey) from March 2005 to February 2006, to explore residents'
experiences and relationships in depth.

4.2 The Community Champions Fund
The Community Champions Fund is now in its final year and we will have to
stop awarding grants by September 2007.
The Community Champions Fund aims to support individuals who are, or want to
be involved in, changing their communities for the better. The Fund is
designed to support individuals to develop personally whilst stimulating
community activity, or who have ideas for encouraging greater community
activity.
A grant of £2,000 is available to a Community Champion who wishes to
undertake a project.

2.1 FREE IT and Internet Seminars for voluntary and community organisations

Our next free seminar is on Thursday, 31st May, 2007 from 3-6pm at the
fantastic headquarters of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, 12
Great George Street, Parliament Square.
As usual we have a range of great topics and speakers. The speakers will
be:
• Amy McGeever, a London-based fundraising consultant and owner of Mesh
Strategies, who will talk about: 'Lessons from The Big Apple: Creating &
Implementing an Integrated Fundraising & Communications Strategy' - Amy
recently completed a project for the New York City-based public media and
educational organisation, Thirteen/WNET New York, using an integrated
software system that manages online donations, surveys, polls, ecommerce,
and email marketing. Results included a 38% growth in online revenue, and a
140% increase in email delivery rates (45,000 to 109,000).
• Nick Andrews, Managing Director of DataSalon Ltd, will present: 'Making
the most of your supporter data: database marketing for the non-technical' -
Nick will be talking about how to enable marketing and fundraising teams to
get the most out of their supporter data through analysis and targeted
marketing. The talk will discuss the challenges of single and multiple
databases, and provide practical tips on turning an 'IT issue' into a great
new fundraising opportunity.
• Pauline Woolley (or Polly Widdershins as she is known in Second Life),
formerly of Ruralnet UK, and now working on setting up Oxford University's
Second Life campus, will talk about: 'Second Life: a resource for
not-for-profits?' - It seems you can scarcely open a magazine these days
without reading something about Second Life, the online virtual world, where
politicians campaign, universities set up virtual campuses, and tabloids dig
assiduously for scandal. But what is Second Life? Is it all hype, or does
it have potential as a valuable tool? Pauline will be talking about how
Second Life can be used for fundraising, for providing information in
innovative ways, and for networking and development. She will also conduct
a live demonstration and, in passing, she'll share some tips on having fun
as well!
The seminar will start at 3.00pm with refreshments available from 14.45pm,
and will finish around 5.30pm.

SKiLD, an initiative run by NAVCA and designed and funded in partnership
with the UK Workforce Hub, have announced a series of one-day courses being
held across the UK.
The courses are aimed at development workers whose job involves supporting
frontline voluntary and community groups.
The workshops include Introduction to Funding Advice, Skills for Development
Work and Introduction to Social Enterprises.
Each course is run in a variety of locations across the UK and cost £45.

3.2 Volunteers Week 2007: June 1 - 7
Volunteers' Week is a national celebration of volunteers and volunteering
which takes place from 1 - 7 June of each year.
It plays a huge part in raising the profile of England's 22 million
volunteers while encouraging others to get involved.
During Volunteers' Week there is a burst of activity as events take place
across the country to increase awareness of the UK's volunteers. Volunteer
managers organise events to publicly thank their volunteers and highlight
their contribution to local groups and the wider community, while
individuals are encouraged to use the Week to find out more about
volunteering.
Everyone is invited to join this national celebration of volunteering; it's
up to you to decide exactly how you join in.
This year, Volunteers' Week includes a huge variety of events across all of

4.1 International Volunteering Projects
There are still hundreds of international volunteer projects available
throughout the world with UNA Exchange. Details are on our new website -

The site is packed full of information about international volunteering and
has an online project search and application facility. You can use this to
choose from projects in more than 50 countries worldwide.
Although there are still many projects available, projects will become full
very quickly. Anyone wanting to do an international project this summer
needs to apply soon!

Preston before ending up in Kendal, but now a few people have dropped out

4.3 CWDC Makes New Funding Available for Training and Development
The Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has announced it is
making a new batch of funding available to support training and development
in the children and young people's sector during 2007-08.
Designed to target groups which find it difficult to access funding from
other sources, the Occupational Group funding supports groups within CWDC's
Sector Skills Footprint so that they can build links, skills and develop
their role within the Children's Workforce.
Bids are available to a maximum of £50,000 for a project lasting 12 months.
Bids should meet one of a range of criteria including: addressing one or
more of the workforce reform processes; demonstrating joint activity across
occupational groups or showing links to CWDC developments.

• Amy McGeever, a London-based fundraising consultant and owner of Mesh
Strategies, who will talk about: 'Lessons from The Big Apple: Creating &
Implementing an Integrated Fundraising & Communications Strategy' - Amy
recently completed a project for the New York City-based public media and
educational organisation, Thirteen/WNET New York, using an integrated
software system that manages online donations, surveys, polls, ecommerce,
and email marketing. Results included a 38% growth in online revenue, and a
140% increase in email delivery rates (45,000 to 109,000).
• Nick Andrews, Managing Director of DataSalon Ltd, will present: 'Making
the most of your supporter data: database marketing for the non-technical' -
Nick will be talking about how to enable marketing and fundraising teams to
get the most out of their supporter data through analysis and targeted
marketing. The talk will discuss the challenges of single and multiple
databases, and provide practical tips on turning an 'IT issue' into a great
new fundraising opportunity.
• Pauline Woolley (or Polly Widdershins as she is known in Second Life),
formerly of Ruralnet UK, and now working on setting up Oxford University's
Second Life campus, will talk about: 'Second Life: a resource for
not-for-profits?' - It seems you can scarcely open a magazine these days
without reading something about Second Life, the online virtual world, where
politicians campaign, universities set up virtual campuses, and tabloids dig
assiduously for scandal. But what is Second Life? Is it all hype, or does
it have potential as a valuable tool? Pauline will be talking about how
Second Life can be used for fundraising, for providing information in
innovative ways, and for networking and development. She will also conduct
a live demonstration and, in passing, she'll share some tips on having fun
as well!

2.2 SKiLD's Summer Learning Programme
SKiLD, an initiative run by NAVCA and designed and funded in partnership
with the UK Workforce Hub, have announced a series of one-day courses being
held across the UK.
The courses are aimed at development workers whose job involves supporting

The workshops include Introduction to Funding Advice, Skills for Development
Work and Introduction to Social Enterprises.

Volunteers' Week is a national celebration of volunteers and volunteering
which takes place from 1 - 7 June of each year.
It plays a huge part in raising the profile of England's 22 million
volunteers while encouraging others to get involved.
During Volunteers' Week there is a burst of activity as events take place
across the country to increase awareness of the UK's volunteers. Volunteer
managers organise events to publicly thank their volunteers and highlight
their contribution to local groups and the wider community, while
individuals are encouraged to use the Week to find out more about
volunteering.
Everyone is invited to join this national celebration of volunteering; it's

throughout the world with UNA Exchange. Details are on our new website -

has an online project search and application facility. You can use this to
choose from projects in more than 50 countries worldwide.

very quickly. Anyone wanting to do an international project this summer

4.3 CWDC Makes New Funding Available for Training and Development
The Children's Workforce Development Council (CWDC) has announced it is
making a new batch of funding available to support training and development
in the children and young people's sector during 2007-08.
Designed to target groups which find it difficult to access funding from
other sources, the Occupational Group funding supports groups within CWDC's
Sector Skills Footprint so that they can build links, skills and develop
their role within the Children's Workforce.
Bids are available to a maximum of £50,000 for a project lasting 12 months.
Bids should meet one of a range of criteria including: addressing one or
more of the workforce reform processes; demonstrating joint activity across
occupational groups or showing links to CWDC developments.

Breast Cancer Care is the UK's leading provider of information, practical
assistance and emotional support for anyone affected by breast cancer. Every
year we respond to over two million requests for support and information
about breast cancer or breast health concerns. All our services are free.
We are committed to campaigning for better treatment and support for people
with breast cancer and their families.
The Policy & Research Directorate provides an evidence base for the
information, support and influencing activities of Breast Cancer Care, on
behalf of people affected by breast cancer. Our established programme of
research informs our own service development, as well as the wider
understanding of the experiences and needs of people affected by breast
cancer. We are now recruiting for the following roles which are based in our
Central Office in Putney, South West London with relocation to central
London in the summer 2007.
Head of Research and Evaluation
Maternity Cover contract for 12 months (secondment opportunities welcome)
NJC Grade H (point 45) - £38,874 per annum (inc. LW)
We are seeking a talented and experienced researcher to lead our successful
Research and Evaluation Team, to cover a period of maternity leave within
our Policy and Research Directorate commencing late July 2007.
Reporting to the Director of Policy and Research and leading the Research
and Evaluation Team, the successful candidate will continue to develop and
deliver a challenging portfolio of work currently underway and planned for
the forthcoming year. This includes providing an evidence base for the
information, support and influencing activities of Breast Cancer Care;
developing research proposals, grant capture, partnership working and
commissioning research; and through leading the delivery of research outputs
across the team.

5.6 Volunteer Recruitment Worker
The Manchester Neighbourhood Care Groups Association has secured funds
through POPPS to employ a part time worker to recruit volunteers for each of
the seven Care Groups located across South Manchester.
The post is for 1 year only and will involve working in different locations
within the south of the City recruiting volunteers and setting up new
projects according to the needs of the different Groups.
The person should have experience of recruiting volunteers, and be confident
about working in varying localities.

Salary £16,137
Hours 20 per week

people who make the North West.
Producing top quality factual television you'll originate and research
stories that engage a local audience and make a big impact. You will be able
to undertake special investigations possibly with the use of undercover
filming.
You'll have a talent for making lively reporter-led films and a track record
in factual TV, experienced at working with presenters and in a small team.
As an experienced TV journalist with drive, energy and creativity, you'll
also have sound knowledge of the law and editorial policy, as well as an
understanding of the diverse communities across the North West.
