1.1 CN4M Grants Tender
CN4M is currently the accountable body for a grants programme called the
CN4M Community Grants - due to limited internal capacity and the short term
nature of this project CN4M is seeking to appoint a 'delivery partner' to
implement this programme in an efficient, effective and accessible manner to
ensure maximum benefit from the available grant funding.
Deadline for submissions is Monday 6th August 12pm.

1.2 CN4M Grants PANEL MEMBERS NEEDED
CN4M are looking for panel members who maybe interested in joining a pool of
people working with Community Network 4 Manchester's new grants program CN4M
Grants.
We are particularly keen to get representation from the different
communities of interest as well as from different geographical areas within
the City of Manchester reflecting the diversity within the area.
You will have the satisfaction of helping distribute significant amounts of
European money to support worthwhile community and voluntary activity across
the City.
It will give you a fascinating insight into the diversity and range of
voluntary and community activity going on in the City, and an opportunity to
learn or develop skills in assessing projects and working as a team to make
the best decisions.
Panel meetings are held centrally, in an accessible building and
refreshments will be provided. Out of pocket expenses will be paid for
travel, childcare etc.

2.1 Offender Learning and Skills - Free training sessions for staff and
volunteers
Work in adult education, training or support work?
Want to learn more about the needs of offenders?
Want more background on the criminal justice system?
Interested in meeting other practitioners?
This free half day course is an opportunity to find out more about working
with offenders in the community in the context of education and skills. The
course is run by NEARIS, a charity which specialises in education for
offenders and other disadvantaged adults in Greater Manchester. The course
will cover: background on the criminal justice system; managing risk; models
of change and motivation.

2.3 Creating Local Solutions
A series of one-day seminars for individuals and organisations introducing
permaculture to improve our well-being and secure our future:
• Climate Change, Peak Oil and Permaculture - Tues Sep 4th
• Food, Neighbourhoods and Permaculture - Tues Sep 11th
• Healthy Communities, Organisations and Permaculture - Tues Sep 18th
Permaculture is based on observing and learning from nature, and using this
knowledge in whatever we do. This might be creating homes, communities,
allotments, reports, woodlands, businesses or anything at all. Permaculture
is essentially about creating beneficial relationships, and its application
is only limited by our imagination.
Each morning will feature a succinct introduction to permaculture, giving
you some tools and techniques that you can use immediately to benefit your
life and work.
The afternoons will be themed, looking at what permaculture has to offer in
relation to broader issues.
The seminars will take place in the 'Relaxation room' at 93 Church Lane,
Harpurhey, a 'well-being' centre managed by Manchester Mental Health and
Social Care Trust. We will be using the centre and its grounds as a focus
for practical design exercises during each day. Sessions will run from
10.00 - 4.00, with lunch from 12.30 to 1.30.
The full day includes a healthy, delicious lunch prepared by service users
at the centre.
The introduction to permaculture will be repeated each morning, so if you
are interested in more than one of the afternoon themes, it will not be
necessary to attend the morning each time.

3.2 Respect Working Group
Monday 10th September 10:30am - 12pm at the Friends Meeting House.
*BACKGROUND* The Community Safety Network (CSN) is recognised as the
voluntary sector arm of the Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership and has
been operational since 2002. There are currently 1,400 members of the
Community Safety Network across the city.
Since the 15th February this year, the CSN has been holding regular RESPECT
Meetings with an average attendance of 30 from the local community, and a
keynote speaker from the CDRP. The purpose of the RESPECT group is to enable
a two-way communication process between the vol/com sector and CDRP
partners; essentially:
. Informing local communities of various partnership structures and
operations
. Ensuring that local concerns and suggestions are being fed-back at a
decision-making level
Each meeting concentrates on a different Respect theme e.g. PCSO's, funding,
signposting, Safer Neighbourhoods etc. and helps local people gain a better
understanding of how the RESPECT Agenda works across the city. The CSN
RESPECT Working Group can be used to address weaknesses in the system and
ultimately help improve crime and disorder structures. The meetings are
accessible to all VCS groups throughout the city and as such, are an
excellent platform for gathering reliable anecdotal public opinion.

3.3 Multi Agency Forum (MAF) Meeting
The Next Multi Agency Forum (MAF) Meeting is taking place at The Friends
Meeting House, Mount Street (behind Manchester Central Library), Tuesday
11th September 2007 9.30 am - 2.30pm
The Multi Agency Forum (MAF) is a networking, planning and
information-sharing event organised every three months by the MARIM team.
At each MAF meeting there are workshops, breakout groups or networking
events organised by people working in different areas such as health,
housing, community support or immigration.

The next neuro support meeting will be taking place on Thursday 9th August
from 4pm - 6pm at Bury Parish Church Hall.
The meeting is for you if you have a neurological condition or injury or if
you care for someone who has.

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a personal development programme of the
highest quality and widest reach, for Young People aged between 14 and 25.
The Discus Project deliver the Duke of Edinburgh's Award across Greater
Manchester in a range of projects, to disaffected young people, including
Youth Inclusion Projects, E2E projects, complementary education projects,
schools and through an Open Award Centre.
Delivery includes a range of outdoor education including kayaking, canoeing,
mountain biking, hiking, and a wide range of youth work methods. A
successful applicant would be working with young people in an outdoor
environment and so an enthusiasm for outdoor education and experience in
youth work are essential.
The successful applicant must have a full clean drivers licence, and the
post will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check prior to the
beginning of the post.

2.1 Inspiring Leaders Seminar Programme
MISPA (Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) has designed an
exciting new learning programme for voluntary and community groups involved
in (or wanting to develop activities around) sport and / or physical
activity called, 'Inspiring Leaders'.
The Seminar Programme will help participants identify and develop their
leadership and management skills. It is suitable for both paid and
volunteer staff in roles such as: coordinators, managers, chief officers and
trustees.

Victim Support & Witness Service is an independent national charity which
helps people cope with the effects of crime.
Every year they strive to raise funds for victims & witnesses affected by

4.3 Third Sector Review - Final Report
The final report of the Third Sector review can be found on the

4.5 Manchester LINk Early Adopter Project
The Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Bill, is currently
moving through the parliamentary process, and proposes setting up Local
Involvement Networks (LINks) to replace the current system of Patient and

5.5 Refugee Action - Community Art Opportunity
Refugee Action are looking for a community artist or group to use their
skills on the client entrance to their offices. The aim is to have an
artistically coherent, culturally appropriate and meaningful entry to
Refugee Action offices that demonstrates a high sense of value for and
understanding of refugees and asylum-seekers. We do not have a particular
idea about how this can be achieved but it needs to take in the entire
experience from a client arriving at Refugee Action to the point where they
are seen by a caseworker. It is not just about decoration - it is about
interacting with the experience of the people who come and understanding
what would be meaningful for them.
This is a voluntary opportunity but we can pay for materials and labour up
to £1000 . We expect the decision-making process to be one of continuous
dialogue but the final decision on go-ahead will rest with Refugee Action.

1.3 CN4M Grants PANEL MEMBERS NEEDED
CN4M are looking for panel members who maybe interested in joining a pool of
people working with Community Network 4 Manchester's new grants program CN4M
Grants.
We are particularly keen to get representation from the different
communities of interest as well as from different geographical areas within
the City of Manchester reflecting the diversity within the area.
You will have the satisfaction of helping distribute significant amounts of
European money to support worthwhile community and voluntary activity across
the City.
It will give you a fascinating insight into the diversity and range of
voluntary and community activity going on in the City, and an opportunity to
learn or develop skills in assessing projects and working as a team to make
the best decisions.
Panel meetings are held centrally, in an accessible building and
refreshments will be provided. Out of pocket expenses will be paid for
travel, childcare etc.

2.1 Inspiring Leaders Seminar Programme
MISPA (Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) has designed an
exciting new learning programme for voluntary and community groups involved
in (or wanting to develop activities around) sport and / or physical
activity called, 'Inspiring Leaders'.
The Seminar Programme will help participants identify and develop their
leadership and management skills. It is suitable for both paid and
volunteer staff in roles such as: coordinators, managers, chief officers and
trustees.

2.2 Offender Learning - Free training session for staff and volunteers
The training will take place in Manchester city centre on Thursday 2nd
August from 1.30pm - 4.30pm
Work in adult education or training?
Want to learn more about the needs of offenders?
Want more background on the criminal justice system?
Interested in meeting other practitioners?
This free half day course is an opportunity to find out more about working
with offenders in relation to learning and skills. The course is run by
NEARIS, a charity which specialises in education for offenders and other
disadvantaged adults in Greater Manchester.

Victim Support & Witness Service is an independent national charity which

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a personal development programme of the

Refugee Action are looking for a community artist or group to use their
skills on the client entrance to their offices. The aim is to have an
artistically coherent, culturally appropriate and meaningful entry to
Refugee Action offices that demonstrates a high sense of value for and
understanding of refugees and asylum-seekers. We do not have a particular
idea about how this can be achieved but it needs to take in the entire
experience from a client arriving at Refugee Action to the point where they
are seen by a caseworker. It is not just about decoration - it is about
interacting with the experience of the people who come and understanding
what would be meaningful for them.
This is a voluntary opportunity but we can pay for materials and labour up
to £1000 . We expect the decision-making process to be one of continuous
dialogue but the final decision on go-ahead will rest with Refugee Action.

and we urge you to nominate your chosen voluntary organisation for this

4.5 Last call to apply for £70 million Youth Volunteering Fund
Local voluntary organisations and community groups have just 23 days left to
apply for cash from v, the youth volunteering charity, to boost volunteering
in Manchester. v is offering £70 million in grants to set up innovative
volunteering projects and interested organisations only have until 10 August
to register an expression of interest.
Grants of between £30,000 and £100,000 per annum over three years are
available to fund innovative projects that can engage young people aged
16-25 in volunteering by tapping into their passions and concerns.
The grants are part of the charity's new National Youth Volunteering
Programme aimed at creating a step change in volunteering in England.

Easy-Web-Page aim to make the Internet accessible for people with learning
difficulties and those who have difficulty reading and writing. They also
help a wide range of service users to have their voices heard on the
Internet. They can help organisations to develop websites that are

can also help to develop mini-sites called Easy-Video-Pages.
Easy-Video-Pages can stand alone or supplement an existing site. They enable
service users to gain information about your organisation from their peers,

4.5 Last call to apply for £70 million Youth Volunteering Fund
Local voluntary organisations and community groups have just 23 days left to
apply for cash from v, the youth volunteering charity, to boost volunteering
in Manchester. v is offering £70 million in grants to set up innovative
volunteering projects and interested organisations only have until 10 August
to register an expression of interest.
Grants of between £30,000 and £100,000 per annum over three years are
available to fund innovative projects that can engage young people aged
16-25 in volunteering by tapping into their passions and concerns.
The grants are part of the charity's new National Youth Volunteering
Programme aimed at creating a step change in volunteering in England.

Easy-Web-Page aim to make the Internet accessible for people with learning
difficulties and those who have difficulty reading and writing. They also
help a wide range of service users to have their voices heard on the
Internet. They can help organisations to develop websites that are
completely accessible, or to make necessary changes to existing sites. They
can also help to develop mini-sites called Easy-Video-Pages.
Easy-Video-Pages can stand alone or supplement an existing site. They enable
service users to gain information about your organisation from their peers,

Refugee Action are looking for a community artist or group to use their
skills on the client entrance to their offices. The aim is to have an
artistically coherent, culturally appropriate and meaningful entry to
Refugee Action offices that demonstrates a high sense of value for and
understanding of refugees and asylum-seekers. We do not have a particular
idea about how this can be achieved but it needs to take in the entire
experience from a client arriving at Refugee Action to the point where they
are seen by a caseworker. It is not just about decoration - it is about
interacting with the experience of the people who come and understanding
what would be meaningful for them.

A nationwide search to capture the UK's most inspiring places on video.
Gloria Hunniford's Sunday morning topical ethical / belief magazine "Heaven
and Earth" on BBC ONE - is joining up with the video web-site YouTube in a
nationwide search for Britain's most inspirational places.
Over six weeks across the Summer, Gloria will be leading an appeal for
programme viewers and 'YouTubers' to pick up a video camera and make their
own short films - showing the places they think are the most inspirational
locations in the UK.
Producer Oliver File says "We're expecting a range of places to be
featured - from classic Cathedrals to stunning rural idylls or sites of
ancient stone circles. And I'm sure someone will be choosing their local
footy club or cricket ground as their most inspirational place!"
At the end of July, the best four films will be chosen by a panel of

The IMPACT Awards are designed to recognise and reward charities that are
doing excellent work to improve people's health.
The Awards are open to registered charities that are at least three years
old, working in a health related field in the UK, with a total annual income
under £1 million.
Nine winners receive £25,000 and an overall winner receives £35,000. Up to
ten organisations that are highly commended or runners up receive £5,000 or
£3,000.

A nationwide search to capture the UK's most inspiring places on video.
Gloria Hunniford's Sunday morning topical ethical / belief magazine "Heaven
and Earth" on BBC ONE - is joining up with the video web-site YouTube in a
nationwide search for Britain's most inspirational places.
Over six weeks across the Summer, Gloria will be leading an appeal for
programme viewers and 'YouTubers' to pick up a video camera and make their
own short films - showing the places they think are the most inspirational
locations in the UK.
Producer Oliver File says "We're expecting a range of places to be
featured - from classic Cathedrals to stunning rural idylls or sites of
ancient stone circles. And I'm sure someone will be choosing their local
footy club or cricket ground as their most inspirational place!"
At the end of July, the best four films will be chosen by a panel of
judges - and shown on "Heaven & Earth" during August.

The IMPACT Awards are designed to recognise and reward charities that are

The Roby in Longsight, Manchester have developed a men's group for the South
Asian male community in Manchester, over 50's. The Group will begin on
Thursday, 12th July at 2pm - 4pm, and will be based at The Roby.
The group aims to encourage South Asian men to address their mental/physical
needs by using preventative methods where possible. We hope to do this by
providing a range of therapeutic activities, an opportunity for individuals
to socialise and a place where individuals are able to share and express any
concerns and worries.

ALL FM are running a free course in 'Skills in Community Radio' where you

The course is a series of ten three hour skill based workshops. They can

3.1 Asian Men's Group - Thursday 12th July 2pm - 4pm
The Roby in Longsight, Manchester have developed a men's group for the South
Asian male community in Manchester, over 50's. The Group will begin on
Thursday, 12th July at 2pm - 4pm, and will be based at The Roby.
The group aims to encourage South Asian men to address their mental/physical
needs by using preventative methods where possible. We hope to do this by
providing a range of therapeutic activities, an opportunity for individuals
to socialise and a place where individuals are able to share and express any
concerns and worries.
The service will be delivered in Urdu/Punjabi and English.

One of the action points from the CN4M Away Day was to set up a
Communications Working Group to look at some of the following topics:
Making the network easier to understand
Using plain English; language that is fit for purpose
Setting up an induction and buddying system
Better communication within the Network
The first meeting of the working group will take place on Monday 9th July
from 10am - 12pm at the Greenfish Resource Centre. The meeting will be
primarily centred around determining the terms of reference of the working
group and how often the group should meet etc.

2.1 Learning Together - The Scarman Trust Manchester Workshops
Over the past months The Scarman Trust Manchester have talked to many groups
about the services they offer; based on what the groups said they are making
changes to their training programme.
For the next 6 months they are going to be running more 'Learning Together'
workshops tailor-made to groups' needs and a bit less of the structured
training. These will be shorter more informal relaxed sessions run by their
experienced development workers and other expert partners.

3.2 Cross Cultural Perspectives in Mental Health
Eastern Pearl Conference Centre, Manchester on 5th September 2007 9:30 am -

Mental health care in the UK is embedded in Western science and medicine,
which has historically been characterised by social exclusion and
inequality. Mental health and illness are socially and culturally
constructed. How appropriate is it to transfer western psychiatric diagnosis
and treatment models onto an increasingly diverse UK population? How can we
develop mental health services within both the voluntary and statutory
sector that respect different cultural understandings? How can we foster
closer working relationships between both sectors?
This conference will attempt to explore the diverse effects of culture and
society on mental health, mental illness, and mental health services. It
will also encourage the exchange of different perspectives, ideas and
practical suggestions to make our services more culturally competent.

A Family Fun Day with a difference taking place at Boggart Hole Clough.
Dust off your cycles (one wheel, two wheels, three or four - it does not
matter). Bring your cycle and the childrens and join in the fun.
There will be family races, and the Wheels for All Cycles will be available
for people with disabilities to join in the excitement as well. If your bike
has a puncture or needs new brake cables - do not worry - a group of
dedicated volunteers from Lakeside Cycles in Bury, have offered to carry out
minor repairs.
Refreshments will be available, as well as information stalls. You can even
enjoy a manicure for a donation to the NSPCC - books for children will be
available for purchase at very reasonable prices, as well as Kite Making and
the Wardens will be there with the electronic cars for all enthusiasts.

4.3 RNIB Campaign Alert - Recent ruling puts the sight of 20,000 people per
year at risk
A draft ruling by the National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence
(NICE) means that four out of five patients with wet age-related macular
degeneration (AMD) - as many as 20,000 people - could be denied treatment to
save their sight each year.

GoldStar is a national, Cabinet Office funded programme for spreading good

The Strategic Health Authority are leading a piece of work across the NW to
promote awareness of mental health as a challenge and ask people to consider

Manchester : Peripheral is a networked installation which remixes and
replays music, voices and ambient sound recorded in Moss Side, Levenshulme
and Ancoats & Clayton. Driven in real-time by votes from special control
kiosks in each ward, Manchester : Peripheral uses digital media to create a
continually evolving soundscape, plotting a new relationship between city
centre and its surrounding areas.

1.1 Communications Working Group
One of the action points from the CN4M Away Day was to set up a
Communications Working Group to look at some of the following topics:
Making the network easier to understand
Using plain English; language that is fit for purpose
Setting up an induction and buddying system
Better communication within the Network
The first meeting of the working group will take place on Monday 9th July
from 10am - 12pm at the Greenfish Resource Centre. The meeting will be
primarily centred around determining the terms of reference of the working
group and how often the group should meet etc.

2.1 Learning Together - The Scarman Trust Manchester Workshops
Over the past months The Scarman Trust Manchester have talked to many groups
about the services they offer; based on what the groups said they are making
changes to their training programme.
For the next 6 months they are going to be running more 'Learning Together'
workshops tailor-made to groups' needs and a bit less of the structured
training. These will be shorter more informal relaxed sessions run by their
experienced development workers and other expert partners.

3.1 Respect Workshop
There are still a few places on the Respect Workshop on Friday 5th July at
Friends Meeting House, 10:15 -12pm (lunch included).
The meeting will be looking at Safer Neighbourhoods and putting into context
what is, how it affects us, and how we can get involved within the
structure. Lee Berry from Manchester City Council will be on hand to talk
through the topic in detail and answer any questions you may have.

3.2 Cross Cultural Perspectives in Mental Health
Eastern Pearl Conference Centre, Manchester on 5th September 2007 9:30 am -
4:30 pm
Mental health care in the UK is embedded in Western science and medicine,
which has historically been characterised by social exclusion and
inequality. Mental health and illness are socially and culturally
constructed. How appropriate is it to transfer western psychiatric diagnosis
and treatment models onto an increasingly diverse UK population? How can we
develop mental health services within both the voluntary and statutory
sector that respect different cultural understandings? How can we foster
closer working relationships between both sectors?
This conference will attempt to explore the diverse effects of culture and
society on mental health, mental illness, and mental health services. It
will also encourage the exchange of different perspectives, ideas and
practical suggestions to make our services more culturally competent.

3.5 Boggart Bikers Family Fun Day - Sunday 1 July - 1.00 - 4.00pm
A Family Fun Day with a difference taking place at Boggart Hole Clough.
Dust off your cycles (one wheel, two wheels, three or four - it does not
matter). Bring your cycle and the childrens and join in the fun.
There will be family races, and the Wheels for All Cycles will be available
for people with disabilities to join in the excitement as well. If your bike
has a puncture or needs new brake cables - do not worry - a group of
dedicated volunteers from Lakeside Cycles in Bury, have offered to carry out
minor repairs.
Refreshments will be available, as well as information stalls. You can even
enjoy a manicure for a donation to the NSPCC - books for children will be
available for purchase at very reasonable prices, as well as Kite Making and
the Wardens will be there with the electronic cars for all enthusiasts.

Conference Overview: With nearly 7 million Britons drinking too much
alcohol, we are rapidly in danger of seeing an inevitable decline in the
nation's health, culture and levels of safety. Manchester has made
significant progress since the launch of its 2005 Alcohol Strategy; however
there is still work to be done if we are to tackle alcohol misuse.
Building on the foundations of existing partnership work, this consultation
event will bring together leading practitioners from across the city for a
genuine opportunity to contribute to the development of the Manchester
Alcohol Strategy 2008-11 and help inform local action.
