1.1 Strategy Group Meeting- important date change
In order for important papers to be prepared and considered fully the
Executive have agreed to postpone the Strategy Group meeting due to be held
on Tuesday 26th Feb 2008 to Tuesday 18th March 2008.
Due to room shortages at Green Fish Resource Centre the meeting will be held
at Cross Street Chapel at the usual time (5.30- 8.00 pm).

1.2 Action Forum On Academies- Thursday 28th February
If you are interested in Academies and what is happening in your area this
is an opportunity to have your say.
The forum is for Voluntary and Community Sector groups and organisations and
will take place at Green Fish Resource Centre on Thursday 28th February 2008
from 6pm - 8pm (5:30pm for refreshments).

1.3 Community Safety Network (CSN) Re-launch event
The Community Safety Network is changing. Over the past 6-years, the CSN has
worked hard to get your views heard at a statutory level. However; this
process has not always been as effective as they would have liked.
The CSN would like to invite you to their last ever conference where they
will be unveiling their new look delivery plan and showing you how they are
ready to campaign for big changes.
The day will focus on 'Promoting The Vision', a first-hand briefing on 'The
New CDRP Strategy' and an explanation as to how 'Community Call For Action'
can work for you.
Plus.... by way of a thank you to everyone for supporting CSN over the last
6-years, there will be a Champagne and Chocolates finale- a great
opportunity to network and share the way forward.

2.1 Manchester Front Line Training Programme - FREE Workshops in
February and March 2008
Manchester City Council has allocated resources from Deprived Area Funding
(DAF) to develop and deliver a programme of training for frontline staff and
volunteers to help Manchester's public, voluntary and community sector
agencies to promote employment and skills for their clients and service
users.
Manchester City Council is working in partnership with Manchester Solutions
to provide a programme of FREE training workshops for staff and volunteers
working in front line services across the city. The one day training
programme offers a unique opportunity to key staff to develop their
knowledge and skills so that they are better able to signpost and refer
their clients, particularly workless local residents, to appropriate sources
of help and support.
There are places available on a number of workshops during February and
March. All workshops run 9.30-4.00pm with Lunch and refreshments provided.

2.2 Project ARGUS- Protecting You Against Terrorist
AttackProject ARGUS is a National Counter Terrorism Security Office (NaCTSO)
initiative, exploring ways to aid you in preventing, handling and recovering
from a terrorist attack.
It achieves this by taking you through a simulated terrorist attack. This
identifies the measures you may need to take. This will also support you in
any 'duty of care' obligations. The ARGUS Team is composed of experts from
ALL emergency services who will provide in-depth briefs on their appropriate
responses to such an attack.
ARGUS is a completely free event, which takes you through a realistic
terrorist attack. You, as part of a syndicate comprised of fellow attendees,
will work through this developing scenario utilising the information given
by the ARGUS Team. The whole event including, refreshment breaks, will last
approximately three and a half hours.

2.3 Live and Learn at Imperial War Museum North
Do you visit museums with your group?
Imperial War Museum North have a FREE short course, called Live and Learn,
funded by Paul Hamlyn Foundation. They have friendly faces on hand to guide
you through what you could do at a museum and how to achieve the most from a
visit. The course will give you the confidence and skills to lead your group
on a visit, from booking to resources and what to do afterwards.
They are looking for Training co-ordinators & Staff development officers,
Group Leaders , Volunteers and Mentors to take part. They are running

2.4 CSV Media Clubhouse Free Internet Workshop
UK Online and CSV Media Clubhouse provide people with access to computers
and the Internet, as well as advice on using them. Through interesting
demonstrations and practical work, you can use computers and internet to do
your grocery shopping, keep in touch with family and friends, book a holiday
and look up for all sorts of information- from football results to weather
forecasts, celebrity gossip to family health. It doesn't matter who you are,
if you've never been near a computer or the internet before, or even you're
unsure about the whole thing- they will be there to help.
The Workshop will be tailor-made for users according to their background and

2.5 Change Makers- Training Leaders for Action
The training is an introduction to a way of campaigning which helps
strengthen your organisation and gains recognition and dignity for you and
your faith community.
This training is for those: wanting to play a more active role in their

leadership skills and those of others; interested in understanding how to
make an organisation more effective and inclusive; inquisitive about who

2.7 Training Events in Manchester 2008
Advanced Rapport Skills- 5th, March, 2008. The training will impart
successful techniques to build rapport easily and genuinely and will
explore: mirroring and matching; sensory acuity; questioning; effective
listening.
Changing Habits & Behaviour- 10th, March, 2008. The training will impart
successful techniques to overcome unwanted behaviour and will include:
working with the unconscious mind; reframing; anchoring; perceptual
positions.
Working Effectively with Clients and Service Users-14th, April, 2008. The
training will explore: understanding how your clients see the world; dealing
with objections & resistance to change; dealing with aggressive clients;

1.1 EN4M- A series of three funding workshops aimed at environmental
groups
SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY FOOD... an introduction to funding and planning for
community groups
Are you a community group interested in making locally grown food accessible
and affordable to local communities? Then come along and find out from Marc
Lupson from the Royal Society of Wildlife Trusts about their new Big Lottery
funding scheme which has £50 million to give away.
Eligible projects could include:
- growing, processing, marketing and distributing local food;
- awareness raising and education about cultural food diversity and growing
of exotic foods from other regions of the world;
- creation of opportunities for learning and the development of skills
through voluntary training and job creation;
- composting and raising awareness of the benefits of such activities.

2.1 Free Mentoring Training- FAO East Manchester residents
Experience Volunteering are running a Mentoring Training Course. This will
be useful for anyone who is currently involved in a caring role or would
like to pursue a career in Health and social care. This is a one day short

3.2 MERCi Stress Busters Day and AGM notification
Stressed out? Jaded? Funding nightmares? Then what you need is a day and
evening of events designed with YOU in mind!
MERCi, in partnership with EN4M and Herbie, are pleased to announce a day of
events focussed on the Third Sector (voluntary organisations, community
groups and social enterprises- other sectors are more than welcome to attend
too). The event will begin with a morning of food and mood information and
activities, in the afternoon there will be a relaxation and fitness taster
sessions featuring Pilates and NIA dance. In the evening a delicious and
healthy supper will be served and then a brief but insightful AGM will be
followed by a speaker on the trials and tribulations of funding and social
enterprise.
The evening will be rounded off with the launch of their successful BASIS
Big lottery bid - *Sustaining Change* - MERCi we will be looking for
interested partners from Greater Manchester to help them deliver this
exciting project about helping the VCS to become more sustainable (and save
money and generate income!!).
Funds are aviailable to pay for your involvement as they recognise your time
is not 'free'. Finally, there will be more refreshments and a chance to

3.5 A Woman's Place, Exhibition and Events: March 2008, Urbis,
Manchester
Examining the role of women in conflict, A Woman's Place will empower people
across Manchester to stand up and fight for what they believe in. This
exciting programme of activities includes school workshops, a celebration
day, a city centre tour and an exhibition.
Everyone involved in A Woman's Place will become empowered to stand up and
fight for what they believe in, by learning from key figures in history such
as mothers in World War II, women at the forefront of the Suffragette
Movement and the parents and children in Greater Manchester who have pledged
their support for Mothers Against Violence.
A Woman's Place celebration day on International Women's Day (Saturday 8th
March 2008) will see a high profile event being staged at Urbis; women,
their families and friends will be invited to make placards to celebrate the
causes they support. They will then take these placards on a march through
Manchester city centre.
The A Woman's Place tour will be delivered on Saturday 8th March 2008, and
is free. Using the city as a backdrop, a member of the Urbis Tour Programme
will reveal stories, and raise questions, about the struggles women faced in
the past century as well as those they face in this one.
In addition, an exhibition in The Social space in Urbis will aim to capture
the essence of A Woman's Place. Materials exhibited will include the
placards made during the celebration day, student work produced in the
school workshops, as well as interactive resources to which members of the
public can add their own thoughts and experiences.

4.1 WREN Communities Challenge 2008
Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) has announced that its annual
Communities Challenge Fund is now open to applications. Through the
Communities Challenge WREN will be working with Local Authorities and
organisations to support the best community regeneration projects by
providing £2 million of funding for capital projects which breathe new life
into tired or rundown facilities or provide much needed new amenities.
Organisations and groups are invited to bid for funding of between £75,000
and £250,000 for capital projects that will make a real difference to their
community. Projects could include; recreational areas such as parks,
community gardens or open green spaces; community centres, village halls or
youth centres; play areas, skate parks or multi-use games areas; nature
reserves or community woodlands; sports centres or recreation grounds;
museums and visitors centres; or a combination of facilities.
To be eligible projects need to be within 10 miles of a WREN landfill site.

SUSTAINABLE COMMUNITY FOOD... an introduction to funding and planning for
community groups

The Skills to Enable Community Learning Programme aims to develop the skills
of staff and volunteers working in community and voluntary organisations in
Greater Manchester. These community groups must work with disadvantaged
groups to deliver skills for life and key skills training.
These IT Courses will be delivered through accredited learning opportunities
in the areas of Management, ICT skills and tutor training. These courses

The Wellbeing Project CIC and North West Regional Youth Work Unit are
working in partnership to deliver a conference that hears from inspirational
speakers. Lively workshops will give participants the opportunity to share
ideas and move the agenda on. The aim of the second annual conference is to
promote awareness of the issues affecting the wellbeing of children and
young people aged 0-19, and what we can do to promote their positive mental
health.

3.2 MERCi Stress Busters Day and AGM notification
Stressed out? Jaded? Funding nightmares? Then what you need is a day and
evening of events designed with YOU in mind!
MERCi, in partnership with EN4M and Herbie, are pleased to announce a day of
events focussed on the Third Sector (voluntary organisations, community
groups and social enterprises- other sectors are more than welcome to attend
too). The event will begin with a morning of food and mood information and
activities, in the afternoon there will be a relaxation and fitness taster
sessions featuring Pilates and NIA dance. In the evening a delicious and
healthy supper will be served and then a brief but insightful AGM will be
followed by a speaker on the trials and tribulations of funding and social
enterprise.
The evening will be rounded off with the launch of their successful BASIS
Big lottery bid - *Sustaining Change* - MERCi we will be looking for
interested partners from Greater Manchester to help them deliver this
exciting project about helping the VCS to become more sustainable (and save
money and generate income!!).
Funds are aviailable to pay for your involvement as they recognise your time
is not 'free'. Finally, there will be more refreshments and a chance to
network.
MERCi is also actively seeking more trustees to help guide them through

3.5 A Woman's Place, Exhibition and Events: March 2008, Urbis,
Manchester
Examining the role of women in conflict, A Woman's Place will empower people
across Manchester to stand up and fight for what they believe in. This
exciting programme of activities includes school workshops, a celebration
day, a city centre tour and an exhibition.
Everyone involved in A Woman's Place will become empowered to stand up and
fight for what they believe in, by learning from key figures in history such
as mothers in World War II, women at the forefront of the Suffragette
Movement and the parents and children in Greater Manchester who have pledged
their support for Mothers Against Violence.
A Woman's Place celebration day on International Women's Day (Saturday 8th
March 2008) will see a high profile event being staged at Urbis; women,
their families and friends will be invited to make placards to celebrate the
causes they support. They will then take these placards on a march through
Manchester city centre.
The A Woman's Place tour will be delivered on Saturday 8th March 2008, and
is free. Using the city as a backdrop, a member of the Urbis Tour Programme
will reveal stories, and raise questions, about the struggles women faced in
the past century as well as those they face in this one.
In addition, an exhibition in The Social space in Urbis will aim to capture
the essence of A Woman's Place. Materials exhibited will include the
placards made during the celebration day, student work produced in the
school workshops, as well as interactive resources to which members of the
public can add their own thoughts and experiences.

4.1 WREN Communities Challenge 2008
Waste Recycling Environmental Limited (WREN) has announced that its annual
Communities Challenge Fund is now open to applications. Through the
Communities Challenge WREN will be working with Local Authorities and
organisations to support the best community regeneration projects by
providing £2 million of funding for capital projects which breathe new life
into tired or rundown facilities or provide much needed new amenities.
Organisations and groups are invited to bid for funding of between £75,000
and £250,000 for capital projects that will make a real difference to their
community. Projects could include; recreational areas such as parks,
community gardens or open green spaces; community centres, village halls or
youth centres; play areas, skate parks or multi-use games areas; nature
reserves or community woodlands; sports centres or recreation grounds;
museums and visitors centres; or a combination of facilities.
To be eligible projects need to be within 10 miles of a WREN landfill site.

Business Support Solutions (BSS) Start up Programme is aimed at individuals

developing your initial business idea, constituting a working group,

Gain new Skills and Confidence in a friendly supportive atmosphere. If you want to get back to work, and are interested in gaining Practical Skills, you may be able to qualify for free training.
The training covered includes Joinery, Plumbing, Tiling, Electrics, Decorating, and even a bit of Plastering.
The Neighbourhood Learning for Deprived Communities Project has links with employers and can provide work experience. They can also help with basic skills to aid your progress. They are based in Beswick, but will also be running volunteer projects around the city.

3.1Who Delivers Public Services?The role of tenants and residentsgroups
Half Day Discussion Event for Tenants and Residents Groups. Jointly hosted by the Centre for Local Governance (CfLG) at The University of Manchester and NW Tenants & Residents Assembly. 6th February 2008, University of Manchester.
There has been a lot of debate recently about the role of the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in delivering public services. There are still many big questions about whether VCS groups will be able to step up to the role, whether they have the capacity, and whether central and local government is ready to support it.
To research the issue, IPEG at the University of Manchester has recently carried out a survey of VCS organisations in the North West Region, in order to build up a picture of their experience and views. The research takes the form of a questionnaire which has been sent out widely to the VCS, including tenants and residents groups, in the North West.
The purpose of this event is to discuss the early findings from the research and for attendees to reflect on whether the findings 'fit' with their own experience and views. This event gives those involved in tenants and residents groups the opportunity to further discuss these questions in view of the specific experiences and contribution of their sector.

Three organisations - Novas Group, PATH and Scarman Trust - completed their merger on 11th December 2007, creating a major new social justice charity, the Novas Scarman Group.

The Methodist Church is looking to recruit enthusiastic and committed youth workers in the Moston and Crumpsall area. This will involve day time, evening and occasional weekend work, primarily with 11-19 year olds. This is a new project and the workers appointed will be instrumental in developing the programme form scratch. In addition to face-to-face work, sometimes with challenging young people, the post involves curriculum planning, some budgetary control and basic report writing. The post holder will be expected to contribute to the wider development of youth provision in the area through meetings and work groups. The post will be managed by Commitment in Communities (CiC). Support and training will be provided through a local steering group and Manchester Youth Service.

1.1 Practical Skills training- Neighbourhood Learning for Deprived Communities (in association with Learn Net)
Gain new Skills and Confidence in a friendly supportive atmosphere. If you want to get back to work, and are interested in gaining Practical Skills, you may be able to qualify for free training.
The training covered includes Joinery, Plumbing, Tiling, Electrics, Decorating, and even a bit of Plastering.
The Neighbourhood Learning for Deprived Communities Project has links with employers and can provide work experience. They can also help with basic skills to aid your progress. They are based in Beswick, but will also be running volunteer projects around the city.

This one day training course is for professionals working with clients and service users who wish to develop effective rapport building skills.
The course has been designed for people who need to establish trust, understanding and confidence with their clients and service users as part of an honest, professional, ongoing relationship. The course is suitable for counsellors, guidance workers, mentors, coaches, support workers, health workers, and others who need to build rapport easily and effectively.

3.1Who Delivers Public Services?The role of tenants and residentsgroups
Half Day Discussion Event for Tenants and Residents Groups. Jointly hosted by the Centre for Local Governance (CfLG) at The University of Manchester and NW Tenants & Residents Assembly. 6th February 2008, University of Manchester.
There has been a lot of debate recently about the role of the voluntary and community sector (VCS) in delivering public services. There are still many big questions about whether VCS groups will be able to step up to the role, whether they have the capacity, and whether central and local government is ready to support it.
To research the issue, IPEG at the University of Manchester has recently carried out a survey of VCS organisations in the North West Region, in order to build up a picture of their experience and views. The research takes the form of a questionnaire which has been sent out widely to the VCS, including tenants and residents groups, in the North West.
The purpose of this event is to discuss the early findings from the research and for attendees to reflect on whether the findings 'fit' with their own experience and views. This event gives those involved in tenants and residents groups the opportunity to further discuss these questions in view of the specific experiences and contribution of their sector.

The Wellbeing Project CIC and North West Regional Youth Work Unit are working in partnership to deliver a conference that hears from inspirational speakers. Lively workshops will give participants the opportunity to share ideas and move the agenda on. Chaired by Dr Laura Pogue, (GP with a special interest in mental health and Chair of the Wellbeing Project CIC) and Dave Sweeney (Operational Director for Mental Health for Halton and St Helens PCT), the conference links with all the Key targets of 'Every Child Matters'.
The aim of the second annual conference is to promote awareness of the issues affecting the wellbeing of children and young people aged 0-19, and what we can do to promote their positive mental health.

2.3 Volunteer training for residents of the Higher Blackley area
Are you interested in improving your local community? Would you like to volunteer to talk to local people about education, training and employment in this area and at the same time improve your own skills?
Manchester Adult Education Service and Surestart are offering a training course in research skills. The course will include working in a team, communication and research skills with a nationally recognised qualification available.
The course will start on Tuesday 29th January at Plant Hill Adult Education Centre.

'Inclusion and Integration through ESOL Pilot Project' is recruiting women who:
• Have very basic or no English but want to communicate with others in English
• Are not eligible to enrol onto ESOL courses but desperately want to learn
• Are isolated but want to make friends and build on their self-esteem
The course is run by trained Volunteer ESOL tutors and includes 68 hours ESOL learning, working towards Entry Level 1, 12 hours life skills training, including information on local services and confidence building. It runs from January until July 2008.
Inclusion and Integration through ESOL Pilot Project is led by Manchester City Council in partnership with: Manchester community groups through Women's Voices Group; Manchester College of Arts and Technology; MAES (Manchester Adult Education Service) Job Centre Plus.

2.1 Breakfast Seminar: Emergency Planning: Protecting Your Business

DigitALL is a new project based in Greater Manchester that matches young
people (aged 18-25) with people aged 45 and over who want help to get
started using he Internet and digital technology. They are running a series
of four linked training workshops on popular topics that will be fun and
informal. At the workshops you will work in pairs, helping someone else
with the activities as you learn together.

3.1 Workshop for forming a response to the 'LDF' consultation
MEETING TO TAKE PLACE ON WEDNESDAY 23RD JANUARY 2008, 7-9PM IN ROOM 1 AT THE
FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE, MOUNT STREET
The Local Development Framework (LDF) will be a new planning document.
It will outline what kind of development we want where, and to what
specification to meet the 'vision' for the city- i.e. if we want improved
health, more jobs, a better environment etc, what do we need in terms of
planning and development to make it happen?
Writing the LDF is a fairly long process. The 'Issues and Option' stage
is being consulted on until 4th February - this is a really early stage
where people are invited to say what they think should be covered in the
document and the sorts of policies it should involve. The workshop is aimed
at those who are interested in forming a response to the document - it aims
to bring those groups together to look at areas where a shared response can
be formed, and assist groups in giving feedback to the consultation.

2.4 Free ICT Workshops- Digital mentoring Projects
DigitALL is a new project based in Greater Manchester that matches young
people (aged 18-25) with people aged 45 and over who want help to get
started using he Internet and digital technology. They are running a series
of four linked training workshops on popular topics that will be fun and
informal. At the workshops you will work in pairs, helping someone else
with the activities as you learn together.
If you are between 18-25 years old come along to our workshops and gain new

3.1 Workshop for forming a response to the 'LDF' consultation
MEETING TO TAKE PLACE ON WEDNESDAY 23RD JANUARY 2008, 7-9PM IN ROOM 1 AT THE
FRIENDS MEETING HOUSE, MOUNT STREET
The Local Development Framework (LDF) will be a new planning document.
It will outline what kind of development we want where, and to what
specification to meet the 'vision' for the city- i.e. if we want improved
health, more jobs, a better environment etc, what do we need in terms of
planning and development to make it happen?
Writing the LDF is a fairly long process. The 'Issues and Option' stage
is being consulted on until 4th February - this is a really early stage
where people are invited to say what they think should be covered in the
document and the sorts of policies it should involve. The workshop is aimed
at those who are interested in forming a response to the document - it aims
to bring those groups together to look at areas where a shared response can
be formed, and assist groups in giving feedback to the consultation.
