About Community Network for Manchester:
Community Network for Manchester is an organisation that brings together a range of networks and pools. Networks are made up of a number of voluntary and community groups and they are concerned with either a geographical area or community of interest. Some networks also provide an additional strategic function that engages with statutory agencies.
We are here to give the voluntary and community sector in Manchester the opportunity to have a strong and collective voice on the issues that matter to them.
We build links between our networks, the wider voluntary community sector and statutory agencies to increase our potential to influence decisions across Manchester.

Community Foundation for Greater Manchester Grassroots Grants fund
The Community Foundation for Greater Manchester is now accepting applications for the Grassroots Grants fund.
This is a new initiative set up by the Government’s Office of the Third Sector and aims to support small voluntary and community groups that are dependent on volunteers.
Nationally, the scheme is being administered by the Community Development Foundation, and in Greater Manchester the Community Foundation has been selected to distribute grants in all boroughs of the county, with the exception of Bolton.
To be eligible for a grant, the group must:
• have been formed before 31st December 2006;
• have an average income of less than £20,000 over the last three years;
• be volunteer led.
Groups can apply for up to £5,000 – either as a one-off payment or a grant spread over a maximum three-year period.
The Foundation is particularly keen to receive applications for capital items for new equipment or renovating buildings.
Money is allocated by financial year, so the Foundation is encouraging groups to apply as soon as possible – as applying later in the year could limit the amount of money available.
Transport Innovation Fund proposals
Following 12 weeks of consultation, the Transport Resource Unit (based at GMCVO) has produced a report detailing the views of the sector on the Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) proposals. Although the views are many and varied, broadly speaking there is a clear recognition that 'something needs to be done' about transport in Greater Manchester but also that there should be safeguards to ensure that voluntary sector services are not adversely affected.
During the course of the consultation, the Transport Resource Unit made contact with over 100 VCS organisations from across Greater Manchester through events, interviews, an online survey and other ad hoc contact.
The consultation report does not endorse or reject the proposals but makes recommendations on future involvement of the sector and on action which can be taken to lessen any potential negative effects to VCS organisations, staff, volunteers and service users.

Project Towpath Community Grants programme supporting ‘return to work’ projects
Greater Manchester Voluntary Sector Learning Consortium was recently awarded the contract for the Community Grants programme Project Towpath. These grants are aimed specifically at all small voluntary and community sector groups within Greater Manchester that help people return to work.
Grants can be used to provide support to 'hard-to-reach' communities and individuals, to enable them to access employment or further learning and training.
Applications from groups supporting people with disabilities to get closer to the labour market are particularly welcome.
Grants cannot be used to duplicate provision that is already available through ESF Co-Financing or mainstream funding.
Some examples of the type of activity that can be supported by a grant are:
• Initial help with basic skills.
• Taster work experience, including voluntary work.
• Training, advice and counselling.
• Job search assistance.
• Confidence building and personal development.
• Engagement activities that support individuals to overcome barriers to learning or employment.

GMVSLC has 92 grant awards available, these will be distributed across the ten local authority areas of Greater Manchester, taking into account relative levels of deprivation and participant profiles.

The Personal Support Unit (PSU) is undertaking an evaluation of their service this year.
They are gathering feedback from PSU volunteers; clients; court staff; Judiciary and external contacts such as other service providers and advice agencies in order to review and evaulate their service.

Community Network for Manchester Networking Event
Community Network for Manchester is holding a Networking Event on Tuesday 28th October 2008. The event will be held at the Friends Meeting House (6 Mount Street, Manchester, M2 5NS), from 4:00pm – 7:00pm. Food and refreshments will be provided.
The event will enable voluntary and community groups working in Manchester to exchange information and ideas, meet funders and representatives from support agencies, and discuss current issues affecting the Voluntary and Community Sector.

Breakout - October Holiday Activities 2008. Recreational and physical sports activities in and around Manchester’s parks and leisure centres.
With a range of activities laid on for all ages, there is no excuse for twiddling your thumbs during this year's half term holiday.
Featuring everything from fishing to wilderness awareness and orienteering - it will all be on offer across the city. The Breakout will set up camp in many of the city's parks and leisure centres with sports such as netball, football, swimming, squash and Taekwondo also available to try. Many of the sessions will be free of charge.
All children must be registered before they can participate in activities unless otherwise advised.

LawWorks are pleased to invite you to the LawWorks Practical Advice Talk (PAT) to be held on Tuesday 11th November, and kindly hosted by one of our central Manchester member law firms.
These free legal training talks are aimed at not for profit organisations and should help them identify legal problems, avoid future legal claims and strengthen their governance by sharing best practice.
The afternoon will consist of two seminars delivered by specialist Manchester-based solicitors:
13.00 – 14.30 Employment – Disciplinary & Grievance Procedure session
15.00 – 16.30 Charity Law session

Church Action on Poverty’s annual conference
Church Action on Poverty’s annual conference will include talks and presentations from a wide range of individuals who have effectivley brought about change in their communities.

This year’s CAP conference provides an opportunity to be challenged, inspired and energised:

• Learn more about the get fair campaign and Poverty and Homelessness Action Week and how you can get involved
• Share your own stories of what inspires you to want to make a difference, what works – and what doesn’t
• Pick up ideas from others about how to engage your church and how to put your own MP on the spot
• Go away with practical tools and ideas to use in your own church or group.

Casework Assistant – Youth Mental Health (YSAP)

YASP – an innovative community based youth mental health project is recruiting a: Casework Assistant – Youth Mental Health.
Hours: 24 Hours per week. Contract will run until 31st March 2009. Salary: £18,430 (pro rata).
The post holder will function as an advocate for vulnerable young people with mental health problems. The worker will assist them with any number of problems including difficulties with benefits, housing, education, employment, family, substance misuse, criminal justice system, as well as offering general support.
The post holder will work with 15-25 year olds, ensuring that advice, advocacy and practical support is offered to clients in a way which enhances the individuals’ ability for independent living and empowers them to make real choices and exercise control over their own lives. The worker will respond to enquiries at YASP’s advice drop-ins and will be proactive in providing crisis interventions on behalf of young people. The worker will also assist with completing benefit application forms and applying for housing.
As a Casework Assistant, the post holder will have a key role in administering the casework service. This will include tasks arising from caseworker allocation meetings such as writing to clients with signposting details and waiting list times.
YASP is highly committed to working with clients in a way which empowers them to make real choices and exercise more control over their own lives. The successful applicant will be expected to share this same level of commitment.
Applicants must have experience of working with young people with mental health needs and have a working knowledge of welfare rights, housing and advocacy.

The future of the Compact questionnaire
Compact Voice has launched a nationwide survey to explore the views of the sector on the future of the Compact. This is a unique opportunity to shape the future of the Compact and ensure it is as relevant and powerful as possible.

The Commission for the Compact has published the findings of a recent research study (The State of Independence), which looks into the understanding and commitment to the Compact and safeguarding the independence of the third sector.
This research concludes that while the Compact has been successful in creating an environment which encourages and supports central government departments in their efforts to observe the independence of third sector organisations and their right to campaign, there are still challenges ahead.

This year sees the Coming of Age of Black Health Agency as we celebrate 18 years of operation. Come and help us celebrate this milestone and raise money for our Crisis Fund, as we bring you a night of entertainment...
Date/ Time, Thursday 13th November, from 7:30pm.
Venue: The Place Hotel, Ducie Street, Manchester, M1 2TP (just behind Piccadilly Train Station).
The evening will commence with a drinks and canapés reception at 7:30pm. There will be the chance to hear some testimonials on the value the work of BHA has brought to the people of the North West. Live musical performances will be provided by two great ‘disco divas’ and local supporting songstress, Julie Gordon. The evening will culminate with the legendary DJ Mike Shaft, a chance to let loose with all the moves Julie, Jaki and Gwen will no doubt inspire!

Gather Round the Piano Community Music Project

Gather Round the Piano is based on the traditional idea of gathering round an instrument or band, in this case a piano, for a community sing-song or jam session. It will be a chance for community groups to have fun trying out musical ideas and to create new pieces of music which combine their own muscial heritage and ideas with the idea of gathering round a piano. You don’t have to be a musical group or have any previous experience.
Who is the project for?
Community groups who would like to explore the music they know and love in a new way. Any age group welcome. The nature of the project makes it unsuitable for young children unless they are part of a mixed adult / child group. We’re looking for a total of 6 groups to be involved.
How do we get involved?

Women Working Worldwide is a charity working to promote the rights of women workers and is based in the Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University. You will also represent WWW in key European networks and manage information exchange and dissemination. Some knowledge of issues concerning gender in the workplace, ethical trade or East Africa would be useful. Somali Elders Support Worker - Somali Adult Social Care Agency (SASCA)

Confident, dynamic and well-organised individual required to address social isolation among Somali elderly people in Manchester by organising and publicising regular social activities.
SASCA is a new voluntary organisation that has been set up in partnership by six Somali groups with help of MACC and Manchester City Council’s POPP programme. The position is funded until March 2009 with an expectation of funding extension.
Based in Manchester, the successful candidate will need to have proven experience of working independently and of supporting Somali elders either formally or informally.
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of problems faced by Somali elderly people and some of the key health issues that are likely to arise for Somali elderly people in Manchester. As the role will involve building and maintaining relationships with Somali service users and relevant organisations, excellent communication skills in English and Somali are essential.
Salary: £528 per month (13 hours per week, spread over 3 days)

It also aims to look at what we can do to promote positive mental health.

Advice Skills & Good Practice: 5 days, 10am – 4pm.
Tuesdays 4 November –2 December 2008, (places still available). Attendance on all days is necessary.
This course is aimed at relatively new advice workers and volunteers who want to gain an understanding of the principles of good practice in advice work and develop their basic advice-giving skills.

Day 1: General Introduction to Advice Work
Day 2: Interviewing Clients
Day 3: Telephone and Electronic Advice Skills
Day 4: Finding, Using and Explaining Information
Day 5: The Advice World Context
Advice Knowledge Days:
We will also be running a series of complementary awareness days aimed at providing initial overviews of different advice subject areas. These courses will be awarded a Manchester Advice Certificate of Attendance but only for students who have completed the skills course. The subject days will include:

· Housing;
· Consumer.
For welfare benefits we run individual courses and also the 10 week Introduction to Welfare Benefits course.
Individual learning & development plans:
An element to this course, which we feel will offer benefits to trainees is the introduction of learning and development plans for trainees at the end of the skills programme. These plans will inform students about employment, training and volunteering options in the advice world and identify any further training needs.
The learning and development session will take the form of one individual learning & development interview and may lead to the student being linked up to a mentor adviser. The mentor's role may include facilitating shadowing, visits to court or tribunals and consultancy if needed.

This year sees the Coming of Age of Black Health Agency as we celebrate 18 years of operation. Come and help us celebrate this milestone and raise money for our Crisis Fund, as we bring you a night of entertainment...
Date/ Time, Thursday 13th November, from 7:30pm.
Venue: The Place Hotel, Ducie Street, Manchester, M1 2TP (just behind Piccadilly Train Station).
The evening will commence with a drinks and canapés reception at 7:30pm. There will be the chance to hear some testimonials on the value the work of BHA has brought to the people of the North West. Live musical performances will be provided by two great ‘disco divas’ and local supporting songstress, Julie Gordon. The evening will culminate with the legendary DJ Mike Shaft, a chance to let loose with all the moves Julie, Jaki and Gwen will no doubt inspire!

The Coming of Age celebration will directly support our ‘Crisis Fund’ which provides material assistance to people living with or affected by HIV and AIDS. Gather Round the Piano Community Music Project

Gather Round the Piano is based on the traditional idea of gathering round an instrument or band, in this case a piano, for a community sing-song or jam session. It will be a chance for community groups to have fun trying out musical ideas and to create new pieces of music which combine their own muscial heritage and ideas with the idea of gathering round a piano. You don’t have to be a musical group or have any previous experience.
Who is the project for?
Community groups who would like to explore the music they know and love in a new way. Any age group welcome. The nature of the project makes it unsuitable for young children unless they are part of a mixed adult / child group. We’re looking for a total of 6 groups to be involved.
How do we get involved?

Based in our office in Manchester, you will work for Women Working Worldwide. Women Working Worldwide is a charity working to promote the rights of women workers and is based in the Department of Sociology at Manchester Metropolitan University. You will work closely with WWW staff and our partners around the world to co-ordinate and implement the advocacy and campaigning activities needed to support women workers in international supply chains and build the profile of WWW. You will also represent WWW in key European networks and manage information exchange and dissemination. You will be a vital member of a small team, and contribute towards WWW’s central role in influencing policy and practice around gender and international trade.
You will be a pro-active self-starter with experience of advocacy and/or campaigning at an international level and excellent communication skills. Some knowledge of issues concerning gender in the workplace, ethical trade or East Africa would be useful. You must be committed to poverty alleviation and extending women workers’ rights to the most vulnerable workers.

Somali Elders Support Worker - Somali Adult Social Care Agency (SASCA)

Confident, dynamic and well-organised individual required to address social isolation among Somali elderly people in Manchester by organising and publicising regular social activities.
SASCA is a new voluntary organisation that has been set up in partnership by six Somali groups with help of MACC and Manchester City Council’s POPP programme. The position is funded until March 2009 with an expectation of funding extension.
Based in Manchester, the successful candidate will need to have proven experience of working independently and of supporting Somali elders either formally or informally.
The ideal candidate will have a good understanding of problems faced by Somali elderly people and some of the key health issues that are likely to arise for Somali elderly people in Manchester. As the role will involve building and maintaining relationships with Somali service users and relevant organisations, excellent communication skills in English and Somali are essential.
Salary: £528 per month (13 hours per week, spread over 3 days)
Closing date for applications is mid-day on Wednesday 15 October 2008. Interviews for shortlisted candidates will be on Monday 20 October.

Free workshops delivered as part of the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service (CAMHS) Multi Agency Training Programme. They are intended for people who work directly with children and young people in any setting in Manchester. The programme aims to increase the confidence and skills of frontline workers in identifying and supporting children and young people with mental health problems and working with other agencies to do this. It also aims to look at what we can do to promote positive mental health.

Advice Skills & Good Practice Course - Manchester Advice

Advice Skills & Good Practice: 5 days, 10am – 4pm.
Tuesdays 4 November –2 December 2008, (places still available). Attendance on all days is necessary.
This course is aimed at relatively new advice workers and volunteers who want to gain an understanding of the principles of good practice in advice work and develop their basic advice-giving skills.
Course Programme:
Day 1: General Introduction to Advice Work
Day 2: Interviewing Clients
Day 3: Telephone and Electronic Advice Skills
Day 4: Finding, Using and Explaining Information
Day 5: The Advice World Context
Advice Knowledge Days:
We will also be running a series of complementary awareness days aimed at providing initial overviews of different advice subject areas. These courses will be awarded a Manchester Advice Certificate of Attendance but only for students who have completed the skills course. The subject days will include:
· Employment;
· Debt;
· Housing;
· Consumer.
For welfare benefits we run individual courses and also the 10 week Introduction to Welfare Benefits course.
Individual learning & development plans:
An element to this course, which we feel will offer benefits to trainees is the introduction of learning and development plans for trainees at the end of the skills programme. These plans will inform students about employment, training and volunteering options in the advice world and identify any further training needs.
The learning and development session will take the form of one individual learning & development interview and may lead to the student being linked up to a mentor adviser. The mentor's role may include facilitating shadowing, visits to court or tribunals and consultancy if needed.

1.0 Network News
1.1 Community Network for Manchester (CN4M) Annual General Meeting - Tuesday 7th October 2008. CN4M's Annual General Meeting will take place on Tuesday 7th October at Cross Street Chapel (Cross Street, Manchester, M2 1NL). The meeting will begin at 6:00pm, and refreshments will be available from 5:30pm.

1.2 Community Network for Manchester Strategy Group Meeting - Tuesday 7th October 2008.
Immediately following the AGM there will be a single item Strategy Group meeting.
This will be the reporting back to Strategy Group from the Task Group, looking at the development of our Strategic Plan.

1.3 The CN4M bulletin is changing! There will be no CN4M bulletin next week (Friday 26th September). We will soon be unveiling our brand-new bulletin and website! Our new-look website will be launched at our 'Celebrating Success' event on Friday 26th September. 2.1 DAST and Lifeline basic drug and alcohol awareness training. Manchester Drug & Alcohol Strategy Team and Lifeline Project Ltd are offering basic drug and alcohol awareness training, from October 2008 to February 2009.
Sessions are free and it is expected that there will be a big demand for places, so please book as soon as possible. To allot places, the organisers will be discriminating in favour of community and smaller voluntary organisations in contact with the public, which do not specialise in substance misuse but need to know about it, though all enquiries are welcomed. 2.2 Volunteering and Ex-offenders Workshop - NEARIS. Work with volunteers? Interested in improving access to volunteering? Working to support ex-offenders to move forwards?

This free one day workshop is a chance to discuss these issues with other practitioners. Local charity NEARIS has been conducting research into the volunteering journey of ex-offenders in Greater Manchester and you will hear some of the volunteer stories on the day. 2.3 Children in Need Funding Workshop.
Designed to increase the success rate of groups applying to BBC Children in Need for funding, this workshop will focus on project planning, defining disadvantage, involving young people, defining outcomes and creative monitoring. The session is free and is run by Children in Need staff.

4.3 Community Inspired Regeneration Awards. Recognising grassroots projects making a difference to their local area, and sponsored by Communities and Local Government for a third year running, these awards celebrate best practice in community inspired and led regeneration in urban and rural areas across the United Kingdom.

4.4 Community Awards 2008. Manchester City Council knows that there are lots of people working hard to improve life in our communities, and the Community Awards are a great way of recognising those local heroes, and the difference they make.
If you know of, or work with, someone who volunteers their time to make improvements to - or someone who makes a positive impact upon - the community, why not nominate them for The Community Awards 2008? You can nominate anyone who lives or works within Manchester city's boundaries, and it's easy to do. There are eight award categories in total. 4.5 Infrastructure support services questionnaire. Manchester City Council has produced a questionnaire to gather information about the infrastructure support services being used by Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations and identify where there may be gaps in provision. 4.6 New addition to CN4M's Knowledgebank: Giving people a say in local spending - Participatory Budgeting, a national strategy.
This strategy sets out an overview of how the government will work towards the ambition for Participatory Budgeting to be used in every local authority area by 2012.

4.7 Current Consultations:
Community Empowerment Fund Consultation. Proposals for a £7.5 million Empowerment Fund to provide funding to national third sector organisations that support local communities have been published. Announced as part of the white paper, Communities in control: real people, real power, the Fund replaces the Strategic Partners Fund which was withdrawn last year.
The Empowerment Fund is part of the wider framework for a stronger partnership between Government and the third sector set out in the Third Sector Review last year and in the 2006 Strong and Prosperous Communities white paper. Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations. The Department for Transport is seeking input on: Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations.
The Local Transport Bill includes measures to promote more effective partnership working between local authorities and bus operators, including through voluntary partnership agreements and quality partnership schemes. The Department has published a consultation on the draft Guidance which it is proposing to issue, and drafts of Regulations which it is proposing to make, assuming the Bill receives Royal Assent.

2.1 DAST and Lifeline basic drug and alcohol awareness training. Manchester Drug & Alcohol Strategy Team and Lifeline Project Ltd are offering basic drug and alcohol awareness training, from October 2008 to February 2009.
Sessions are free and it is expected that there will be a big demand for places, so please book as soon as possible. 4.4 Community Awards 2008. Manchester City Council knows that there are lots of people working hard to improve life in our communities, and the Community Awards are a great way of recognising those local heroes, and the difference they make.

Community Empowerment Fund Consultation. Proposals for a £7.5 million Empowerment Fund to provide funding to national third sector organisations that support local communities have been published. Announced as part of the white paper, Communities in control: real people, real power, the Fund replaces the Strategic Partners Fund which was withdrawn last year.

3.7 Manchester Full of Life Festival. The country's biggest celebration of older people is back bigger than ever! A must for your diaries, the free festival will run for a full two weeks (from 29th September 2008 until 10th October 2008, at various venues across the city).

4.1 Community Awards 2008. Manchester City Council knows that there are lots of people working hard to improve life in our communities, and the Community Awards are a great way of recognising those local heroes, and the difference they make.

The Local Transport Bill includes measures to promote more effective partnership working between local authorities and bus operators, including through voluntary partnership agreements and quality partnership schemes. Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations. The Department for Transport is seeking input on: Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations.
The Local Transport Bill includes measures to promote more effective partnership working between local authorities and bus operators, including through voluntary partnership agreements and quality partnership schemes. The Department has published a consultation on the draft Guidance which it is proposing to issue, and drafts of Regulations which it is proposing to make, assuming the Bill receives Royal Assent.

5.3 Autistic Society Greater Manchester Area (ASGMA) - 2 Vacancies
Fundraiser. Salary: £17,000 - £19,000 (dependant on proven successes and experience), Hours: 35 hours per week - flexible working. Contract: one year fixed term, contract negotiable after first year.
This will be a new position for ASGMA and the ASGMA Fundraiser will work closely with the Chief Executive in developing community fundraising initiatives, developing links with groups, clubs and associations - as well as developing, encouraging and supporting fundraising volunteers.
Admin Officer. Salary: £13,336-£15,470 pro rata dependant on qualifications and experience (£10,668-£12,376 actual). Hours of Work: 28 hours per week to be worked flexibly in agreement with the postholder (this can include school hours).
The Admin Officer will support the Administration and Finance operation of ASGMA. The role includes the provision of comprehensive administrative support and financial bookkeeping support as well as ensuring the upkeep of a small Resource Centre and running a room booking system.
