1.1 CN4M Communications Working Group

2.0 Training

2.1 Doing Community Development: values into action
Coming up on September 11th & 12th in Birmingham - 'Doing Community
Development: values into action' : a two-day training course focusing on
planning and evaluating community empowerment and community wellbeing.
The course offers a strategic way for organisations, departments and
individuals:
to take a community development approach to their work and evaluate the
outcomes
to plan their community development activity and keep track of what happens
as a result
to see how taking a community development approach can help meet targets and
outcomes around community engagement and community empowerment
Course fee: £340 + VAT (fee includes accommodation for one night and meals)

2.2 BA (Hons) Applied Community and Youth Work Studies
Applications are now being accepted for a special course for suitably
experienced practitioners who have previous relevant undergraduate level
qualifications. Applications for the final year of the BA (Hons) Applied
Community and Youth Work Studies are available from the undergraduate
admissions office at the University (0161 275 3292).
Starting in September 2007, they will be running a small pilot "Level Three"
course leading to this new honours degree. The course is for individuals who
already have JNC professional status (Joint Negotiating Committee for youth
and community work) and wish to "upgrade" their qualification to a degree.
The course is designed for experienced practitioners who are interested in
serious study and research into community work and youth work issues and
practice. The course can be undertaken on a part-time (18 months) or
full-time (11 months) basis with required units running on a Monday.

Individuals interested in starting at the beginning of the degree course,
which is planned to start in September 2008, can contact the same office for

2.3 Dementia Awareness Training

This informative and interactive session, run by the Admiral Nurses, aims to
enable participants to have an introduction to dementia; to learn more about
the different types of dementia, its impact upon the person and those caring
for them, and how we can improve the quality of life for people with
dementia and their carers

The training is for anyone working with people with dementia, including
support workers, administrative staff, ancillary staff and qualified staff
new to the field or who would like a refresher.

Sessions are to be run on a Friday, from 9.30a.m. to 12.30p.m., on the
following dates: 21st Sept 2007, 23rd Nov 2007, 18th Jan 2008, 14th March,
2008

The course is free to employees of the Manchester Mental Health & Social
Care Trust and employees of Manchester City Council 's Children, Families
and Social Care Services. All other organisations will be charged £25 + VAT
per booking.

3.0 Events

3.1 Respect Workshop

There are several spaces available for the Respect Workshop on Monday 10th
September, 10:30am -12pm.

Keynote Speaker - Paul Cullen, Safer Neighbourhoods Co-ordinator - Crime and
Disorder Unit

Venue - Friends Meeting House lunch/refreshments will be provided

Why Should I Bother?! - The findings and recommendations put forward in the
meeting will be submitted to the Respect Officers Group at City Council.
This is a genuine opportunity to get involved, find out more and is NOT just
another talking shop! If you have something to say- come and say it!

Who Should Attend? - This group is particularly suitable for local groups
and activists who may have experienced difficulties in getting onto the
LAPS. This meeting acts as another route in and is recognised as one of the
community engagement structures at the Crime and Disorder Team. It is also a
really useful way of linking to contacts in your area that might be working
towards the same goal.

3.2 Register for Rev Jesse Jackson's Visit to Moss Side
Invitation to hear an international guest and respected Statesman Reverend
Jesse Jackson Snr speaking exclusively to an invite only audience as part of
a nationwide tour organised by Equanomics UK. The event is hosted by Black &
Minority Ethnic Christian Association and supported by Manchester City
Council and other Community Groups. It will take place at the Church of God
of Prophecy August 25th, 2007 at 6pm until 7.30pm.

A key purpose of this event is to support the commemoration of the abolition
of the slave trade and to highlight the economic contribution of Black and
Minority ethnic communities in the UK past and present.

3.3 Cancer Awareness Project
2 yrs funding has been secured to deliver a health promotion project to
raise awareness about presenting cancer symptoms early.

Manchester Primary Care trust are leading on this and will be focusing in 3
areas including Cheetham Hill.
This is an opportunity to be involved with the project team or find out more
about the project.

The event on Wednesday 19th Sept is from 12pm - 3pm ( starting with a buffet
lunch 12pm -1pm) in the Ken Barnes suite Holiday Inn 888 Oldham rd (between
Miles platting and Newton heath)

4.1 Free support to groups or individuals considering starting a social
enterprise!

3SE Social Enterprise Start-Up Programme - In association with the North
West Development Agency, 3SE and Co-operative Mutual Solutions are offering
a menu of support services for individuals or voluntary or community groups
in Greater Manchester with a social enterprise idea. 3SE's Start-Up Support
Programme has been developed specifically for you. Services can be accessed
as stand alone elements or used together to help you to move your enterprise
idea forward, help you to start up a social business or make your community
group more enterprising.

4.2 Compact Voice Focus Group
Compact Voice, the representative body for the VCS on the Compact, is
looking for people to take part in a focus group in Manchester. The purpose
of the focus group is to find out about your experience of the Compact and
will be included as part of a wider report exploring the relationship
between the sector and the government as framed by the Compact.
What you tell them will be presented directly to government ministers
(including Phil Hope and Ed Milliband) and will help set priorities for the
future.
They are looking for people who have had positive as well as negative
experiences. They are also looking to reflect the diversity of the voluntary
and community sector so no matter the size of your organisation, the
activity you engage in, or the groups you represent, they would be very
interested in hearing from you.
The focus groups will take place in Manchester on 2nd October.
Lunch and travel costs will be provided as well as redeemable NCVO book
vouchers and a copy of the final report.

4.3 Request for VCS input into Northwest Worklessness Study
Request for VCS input into a key regional study high up on the current
policy agenda.
Regeneris Consulting are asking for:
Specific good practice examples of interventions that work particularly well
in reducing overall worklessness (what evidence is there of effectiveness?
What accounts for the relative effectiveness of the intervention?)
Good practice principles for delivery which make for more effective
interventions (please give examples)

enthusiastic administration worker to help run our Manchester centre. This
is a varied and interesting role, working as part of a small friendly team.

5.2 Development Officer Scarman Trust

22.5 hours per week £18K - £20K pro rata (initial contract to the end of
July 2008)

Scarman Trust Manchester has a vacancy for a development worker.

Main tasks will be to provide information and support to new and existing
groups across the city of Manchester with main responsibility for the East
of the City. The successful candidate will have relevant experience (paid or
unpaid) of working in the community voluntary sector.

5.5 Part Time Worker - The Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme
Salary: £19,181 to £20,669 (initially funded until March 2008)
20 hours per week

The Duke of Edinburgh's Award is a personal development programme of the
highest quality and widest reach, for Young People aged between 14 and 25.
Delivery includes a range of outdoor education including kayaking, canoeing,
mountain biking, hiking, and a wide range of youth work methods.

A successful applicant would be working with young people in an outdoor
environment and so an enthusiasm for outdoor education and experience in
youth work are essential. Outdoor qualifications, such as qualifications in
hiking, climbing, kayaking or mountain biking, would be desirable but are
not essential.

The successful applicant must have a full clean drivers licence, and the
post will be subject to a Criminal Records Bureau check prior to the
beginning of the post.
