1.0 Network News
1.1 Strategy Group Meeting. As agreed by the Strategy Group at the
meeting held on the 18th March, the next Strategy group meeting (8th April)
has been cancelled.

1.2 Community Safety Network (CSN) re-launch event- places still
available. The Community Safety Network is changing. Over the past 6-years,
the CSN has worked hard to get your views heard at a statutory level.
However, this process has not always been as effective as they would have
liked.
The CSN would like to invite you to their last ever conference where they
will be unveiling their new look delivery plan and showing you how they are
ready to campaign for big changes. The day will focus on 'Promoting The
Vision', a first-hand briefing on 'The New CDRP Strategy' and an explanation
as to how 'Community Call For Action' can work for you. Special Guests to be

2.1 ICT Course- Intro/Intermediate Database. Intro/Intermediate
Database (MS Access): 8th, 15th and 22nd April 2008. Provided by: Women's
Electronic Village. Course open to Men & Women.
This course runs 9.30am - 3pm, 3 x sessions, 15 hours in total - students
must attend all 3 sessions to gain the certificate. Fees: The full 3 day

2.2 Ethnicity Support Programme- Working with the Orthodox Jewish
Community. Binoh Manchester- Community & Infrastructure Support. Ethnicity
Support Programme- A free ½ day support seminar for GMVSS members. "Working
with the Orthodox Jewish Community". Key aims of the seminar- To give
members an insight into the community including: Demography; Issues
affecting the community; Sensitive service design and delivery; Community
organisations and voluntary services; Culture, customs and social etiquette.

2.3 Changing the Limiting Beliefs of Learners & Service Users. This
course aims to inspire, impart practical skills and be creative and
enjoyable. The course is aimed at people working with learners and service
users who have limiting beliefs about themselves and what is possible for
them in their lives.

2.4 CLES Summer School 2008- Shaping fairer places for the future.
"Shaping fairer places is about creating local economic strategies, which
seek to spread out wealth, create economic cohesion and promote social
justice" Neil McInroy, Chief Executive, CLES. This Summer School is designed
to equip delegates with the necessary knowledge, skills and insight into
contemporary governance and policy making to enable them to think to the
future, develop solutions and shape fairer places.

2.5 Workshops for Adult Learners' Week or Learning at Work Day. The
Open University in the North West has put together a wide ranging programme
of workshops which can be delivered to groups of staff, volunteers or
learners. Most of these are intended for a general adult audience who
wouldn't be expected to have any prior knowledge of the subject, although
some are most suited to those with level 2 (GCSE level) literacy. Sessions
last from 45 minutes to 2 hours and cover a wide range of topics in the
areas of arts, maths, languages, business studies and study skills.

2.6 Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Programme- now
available in East Manchester. A computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy
programme called 'Beating the Blues' is now available at East City Library
at MANCAT (Openshaw campus) on Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 6.30pm. The programme
consists of an introductory video and 8 sixty-minute sessions, which
incorporate best practice in cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT)
delivered through a computer based multi-media package. 'Beating the Blues'
helps people to understand the causes and symptoms of anxiety and
depression. It also helps them to identify and change unhelpful ways of
thinking and to learn more effective ways of solving their problems.
This project has been funded by New Deal for Communities in East Manchester
and supported by Manchester Public Health Development Service - part of
Manchester Primary Care Trust.

2.7 Getting a Fair Deal from Contracts. This three-day programme
will equip delegates with the knowledge, skills and attitude to negotiate
fairer contracts with public sector agencies. For: Managers and trustees who
may be involved in bidding for, negotiating and managing contracts and
service agreements between voluntary and public sector agencies.

2.8 Third Sector Peer Coaching Programme for Learning and Skills.
This is a new free programme running from March 2008 to March 2009 for Third
Sector providers of learning and skills and Third Sector organisations about
to become providers.
Is your organisation: planning to go through the Learning and Skills
Council's (LSC) Pre Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ) or Invitation to
Tender (ITT) processes; currently involved in these; just got through the
PQQ or succeeded in becoming an LSC-funded Third Sector provider for the
first time; or an existing Third Sector provider that would welcome support
around quality issues and meeting LSC requirements? Would you like:
short-term, tailored support and guidance from a peer coach who also works
in the Third Sector and who has successfully managed the delivery of
learning programmes for the LSC? Then this could be for you!

3.2 Section 106 Agreements Information Session. Planning Aid is an
independent charitable organisation funded to support individuals and
community groups with planning related issues who cannot afford to pay for
professional advice. They are working with the Sustainable Neighbourhoods
Pool to provide an information session for community groups on Section 106
agreements.
This free information session is being held to help clarify the situation
for community groups. It will be lead by professional experienced town
planners and attended by a representative of the Ethical Properties
Foundation who is currently researching the issue of community involvement
in Section 106 agreements.

3.3 Creativity and Innovation for Global Citizenship- Project Launch
Event (funded by Oxfam UK). The aim of the project is to develop the
knowledge and skills base in innovation, creativity and risk for global
citizenship. What competencies are required in young people to innovate, be
creative accept and manage risk? How can the current educational, political
and business interest in the above agenda be harnessed for the delivery of
the global dimension in schools? How can we work with young people to
develop innovation, creativity and risk acceptance and apply it across the
curriculum to such diverse issue as scientific solutions to climate change,
fair trade schools and pupil voice in the school?

3.4 The North West's Regional Social Enterprise Conference. Social
Enterprise North West (SENW) and The Northwest Regional Development Agency

3.5 NEBATA's 10th Annual Conference. North of England Bone Marrow
and Thalassaemia Association 10th Annual Conference. The event is free and
is of particular interest to members of the BME community. The topics
covered will be: Blood Transfusion & Blood Safety, Bone disease and Vitamin
D, Awareness of the Screening programme, Iron chelation therapy - the
choices, Survival with Thalassaemia presented by TIF, Update of Nebata. The

3.7 Public Transport Information Sharing Event For Disabled People.
The Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People (GMCDP) is holding two
events (one of which has already taken place), on behalf of GMPTE, to give
disabled people an opportunity to learn more about public transport, about
recent developments and plans to improve public transport opportunities.
The next event will be held on: Friday 28th March, 10am-4pm, at the Links
Centre, Oldham (this event will include a short performance about transport
issues by the GMCDP young people's group).

Faith Sector For Children, Young People And Families In Manchester-
Conference. Organised by the Child & Family Support Forum (MACC), Voluntary

to engage with the children, young people and families strategic agenda, to

4.1 Win a signed Manchester United football. Sign up and volunteer
as a 'Match-day Ground Collector'. As part of the three-year 'United for
Childhood' partnership with The Children's Society, 100 volunteers are
needed for a one-day event at Manchester United's Old Trafford Stadium. All
volunteers will be entered into a draw to win a football signed by the
Manchester United first team! Volunteers will be raising vital funds for The
Children's Society's work, which include youth projects in Manchester.
Volunteers are required to be over 18 years of age. If a volunteer is either
16 or 17, we would be happy to have them at the event accompanied by a
parent or guardian.

4.3 Have your say - Crime & Communities Review Team. Louise Casey
was commissioned by the Prime Minister last October to conduct a review
looking at how local communities, the police, local criminal justice
agencies and other local partners can best work together to reduce crime,
raise community confidence, improve information to local people and lower
the fear of crime. Last week the Home Secretary launched 'Have Your Say'-
the part of the review which aims to give the general public and those
working in the field a specific opportunity to make their views known upon
the themes and issues that we are concerned about and interested in. Please

4.4 Research Reports from IVAR: advocacy role of community anchors.
Two research reports from IVAR concerning third sector organisations and
their links to public authorities in disadvantaged communities in the UK are
now available... 1) Exploring the advocacy role of community anchor
organisations: Final report - February 2008. A research report by IVAR
(Institute for Voluntary Action Research), London which was prepared for
bassac, a national umbrella association supporting a network of independent
community based organisations seeking to tackle the causes and effects of

5.7 Project Manager- Young Adults Advice and Support Project. Job

5.8 Project Worker- Southern Voices (Manchester). Job Title: Project
