1.0 Network News

1.1 Reminder - Community Safety Crime Forum (North). Calling all groups working within: Crumpsall, Cheetham, Charlestown, Higher Blackley, Moston, Harpurhey, Ancoats, Clayton, Beswick, Openshaw, Miles Platting, Newton Heath, Collyhurst and Bradford.

1.2 Reminder - North Manchester Community Network Annual General Meeting. On Sunday 6th July, the North Manchester Community Network will be holding their Annual General Meeting. You are welcome to come along and meet like minded people from the voluntary and community sectors in North Manchester. Group representation and individuals welcome. The afternoon will commence with a buffet lunch at 1pm. The meeting will start at 2pm for approximately one hour.

2.1 Acevo Events and Training Courses. Acevo (Association of Chief Executives of Voluntary Organisations) have announced details of a wide range of workshops, training programmes and events taking place in the North West in Autumn 2008. 2.2 Introduction to Advocacy training. This highly interactive training day will focus on defining what advocacy is, different models of advocacy and what constitutes effective practice. Cost: £75 for the voluntary sector, £105 for the statutory sector, which includes lunch and refreshments. 2.3 Women In Construction - Jobs, Training, Help. The Women Construction Solution Project in Beswick has been training women in Practical Skills for over 3 years.

"From DIY To Professional". They can offer training and work experience opportunities to women from areas of Manchester who are in receipt of benefits; building skills, confidence, and independence. They are also working with employers, and within a strategic network "North West Diversity In Construction Forum", to try and access jobs for women in construction. They have become aware of a number of current job opportunities - please contact them to find out more.

3.1 Reminder - Fallowfield International Festival 2008. The event is part of the 'Not part of Festival' and will have stalls, music and activities for children and families.

3.2 Drake Music and Stockport Cerebral Palsy present....Herbis - Urban Music to Garden to. Free performance by The Prospectors. Hear new local band The Prospectors shake up a sunny summer's afternoon with Herbis, music inspired by the Urban Gardening exhibition. Fusing ambient, dance, electronica and house music, the band contrast the chaos of modern urban life with the calm of nature in an exciting set of new music.

3.3 Manchester LINk. The Manchester Local Involvement Network (LINk) is a network bringing together local people, organisations and groups who want to improve health and social care services in the city. The Manchester LINk will give everyone in the community - from individuals to voluntary groups - the chance to tell them about their experiences and how things can be improved. 3.4 Neuro Support For Salford Meeting. Linking, Listening, Informing, Speaking Out...Something new for you if you have a neurological condition or injury, or care for someone who has. Next Meeting: Ordsall Hall Tour... Les Willis will lead a tour around Ordsall Hall giving the history of the rooms, ghosts, and stories locals have passed on.

3.5 Book Launch Celebration!

'Am I Safe Yet? Stories of Women Seeking Asylum in Britain'. Come and support Women Asylum Seekers Together (WAST) as they launch their book of first-hand narratives by nine WAST members. Each woman tells the story of her early life, what led her to flee her home in Africa or Asia and her experiences since arriving in Britain. The book is illustrated with full-colour portraits and poetry and contains background information on the British legal system and how it relates to asylum-seeking women and their families.

3.6 North West Regional Conference 2008. Presentations from regional opinion formers themed around the 'The Past, The Present and The Future' of the region including effects of the sub-national review. There will be an evening reception on Monday 14th July 2008 followed by the conference on Tuesday 15th July 2008.

3.7 Open University Open Event. The Open University offers a wide range of short courses, longer undergraduate and postgraduate courses relevant to staff and volunteers in the voluntary sector, including courses in: childhood and youth studies; health and social care; environment; management and education which can lead to certificates, diplomas or degrees. 4.0 Information

4.1 Manchester Community Information Network signs partnership with the BBC. Manchester Community Information Network and the BBC are to work together to open up pathways into employment in the media industry and to develop new talent within the region. Manchester Community Information Network has signed a partnership agreement with the BBC, ahead of the Corporation's move to Salford in 2011. 4.2 Manchester City Council CASH grants 2008/9. Residents and tenants groups, community groups, voluntary sector organisations and interest groups are eligible, and you do not have to be formally constituted.
The application process is much simpler this year with just a one side of A4 application form. 4.3 Pitch Your Project. Pitch Your Project is looking for organisations that benefit the health, wellbeing and fitness of their community with the support of volunteers. Whether it's running a sports club, befriending scheme, or patient support group, if the project has a great idea for making a difference with volunteers, they could win £2000 cash when they present their project and ideas to a panel of experts. Five short listed projects will be given £250 to develop a plan for using volunteers, as well as receiving face to face advice from a panel of experts in communications, design, health and volunteering.

Pitch Your Project is run by TimeBank in partnership with the NHS Foundation Trust Network and is looking for innovative and effective ways in which volunteers can support the delivery of health and wellbeing services.

4.5 Participatory Budgeting Update. Participatory Budgeting - the consultation on the proposed PB Strategy has now ended (see www.communities.gov.uk/publications/communities/participatorybudgeting) but you can find out how the current pilots are progressing and get information on a new toolkit and PB values, principles and standards on the PB Unit's website.

4.6 Local involvement leads to happier communities. The Local Wellbeing Project, a joint initiative led by the Young Foundation, IDeA and Richard Layard from the LSE has published a new report. Entitled 'Neighbourliness+Empowerment=Wellbeing' the report shows how neighbourhood and community empowerment can improve wellbeing.

5.1 Voluntary Action Oldham - Partnership Development Officer (2 posts).
