One and All exhibition at Manchester's Castlefield Gallery

One and All is the gallery showing of the artworks that were featured in the city wide exhibition "I don’t know about Community Networks, but I know what I like..." which were shown at various community centres across Manchester in January 2009. Through this exhibition seven North West based contemporary artists examine and respond to the themes, environments, structures and networks of community and voluntary engagement in Manchester.

"I don’t know about community networks, but I know what I like…" was initiated as an art research project by Alison Kershaw during time spent with the Culture Pool of Community Network for Manchester.

The exhibition runs until Sunday 17th May 2009, and the gallery is open Wednesday – Sunday, from 1:00 - 6:00pm.

Let Them Work Campaign - Refugee and Migrant Forum Manchester

Let Them Work is a national campaign led by the TUC and the Refugee Council in partnership with a range of national and regional organisations across the U.K.

Over the coming months the Refugee and Migrant Forum Manchester will be running two campaign meetings:

Sustainable Neighbourhoods Action Group (SNAG)

On the 31st March 2009, the Sustainable Neighbourhoods Pool was re-named 'Sustainable Neighbourhoods Action Group', or SNAG for short.

SNAG are a collection of grass-roots groups living, working and campaigning for a more sustainable Manchester. They are trying to ensure that the places where we live (our neighbourhoods) can fulfil their potential and become what we as citizens both need and deserve them to be.

SNAG are the third sector voice of the Sustainable Neighbourhoods Partnership which governs housing, planning, regeneration and environmental issues right across the city - and they like to say what’s on their minds.

SNAG is a branch of Environment Network for Manchester and the convenor is based at MERCi. SNAG is part of Community Network for Manchester.

Community Safety Network (CSN) crime forums are designed to help voluntary and community sector groups respond to local crime and disorder based concerns. The issues raised will be directed to Manchester’s Crime and Disorder Reduction Partnership. Local Inspectors and Community Safety Co-ordinators review the information you tell CSN about and provide CSN with feedback, so you know what actions have been taken.

Service User Involvement Conference - Service User Network for Homeless People

Service User Network for Homeless People will be holding a best practice conference in Service User Involvement.

Date/Time: Monday 29th June 2009,
Venue: Mechanics Institute in Manchester.

This conference will focus on the success of recipients of a small grant from the SUN, aimed at facilitating new service user involvement activities.
It is hoped that this event will inspire staff and service users to take user involvement forward, and generate examples of good practice ideas and methods for small scale user involvement.

Project Updates
New Report Released - Developing the Volunteering Infrastructure in Manchester
Commissioned by Community Network for Manchester, this report is the culmination of a consultation process which engaged those working at both a practical and strategic level on volunteering issues in Manchester.

The report sets out three key recommendations:

Provide a clear strategic direction for volunteering in the city.
Implement a co-ordinated approach to good practice support in the city.
Create a central hub to improve access to volunteering for Manchester residents.

Research on the impact of the economic downturn on Third Sector organisations in Manchester
Community Network for Manchester is conducting research into the impact of the economic downturn on Third Sector organisations in Manchester.

This research project will seek to provide evidence from a number of organisations on the direct impact of the economic downturn on their organisation both in the short term and long term. The research will identify examples of good practice and partnership working and establish what support Third Sector organisations in Manchester will need during the economic downturn and beyond.

The data-gathering phase of the research was carried out from February to March 2009.

Next Strategy Group Meeting and Networking Events
Community Network for Manchester Networking Meeting - Tuesday 28th April 2009

The next Community Network for Manchester Networking Meeting will take place on Tuesday 28th April, from 4:00pm – 7:00pm, at MDDA (Manchester Digital Development Agency), Lower Ground Floor, 117-119 Portland Street, Manchester, M1 6ED.

What will the networking event involve?

The event will involve interactive workshops. Initial plans are for one of these workshops to focus on the recommendations which have emerged from CN4M’s research into the impact of the economic downturn on Third Sector organsiations (specifically, how these recommendations can be turned into positive action).

Another workshop will focus on information exchange both within our networks and across the sector (specifically, how we can create opportunities for sharing information from meetings, events and conferences; and how we can create opportunities for mutual support through informal information exchange).

Two current Consultations will also be highlighted. You will have the opportunity to contribute to both workshops and there will be plenty of opportunities for networking during the event.

New NHS Standard Contracts: Your Questions Answered

This April 2009 the NHS are introducing their new Standard
Contracts for all providers funded above a certain level. Below this level, providers will become grant-maintained.

The Health Partnership at GMCVO has had a large volume of queries from its membership about the new Contracts. To get some answers to these questions and more, please book a place at the event.

Helping Over 50s Through the Economic Downturn Conference

Evidence uncovered by Age Concern and Help the Aged suggests that the poorest pensioners have been hit hard by the rising cost of living. With pensioner poverty rising, older and vulnerable people are at risk of becoming the hidden victims of the economic downturn.

'Architecture for Everyone' Campaign Event

The 'Architecture for Everyone' campaign is a partnership between the Stephen Lawrence Charitable Trust and leading international architects RMJM, and aims to encourage and support young people from BME, and socially excluded groups considering a career in architecture and related professions.

A free workshop will be held for young people aged 17-25 to learn about architecture and urban design:

There are two elements to the campaign - a nationwide design competition and a series of design-led workshops in inner city areas across the country.

The Women’s Safety Service at Independent Choices, Greater Manchester provides support to women whose partners or ex-partners attend the Integrated Domestic Abuse Programme (IDAP) run by the Greater Manchester Probation Service.

They are currently recruiting for the following posts:
Women’s Safety Service Manager, Salary Scale: £26,784 to £30,546, NJC Points 32 to 37, Hours: 35 hours per week including evenings and weekends.

Women’s Safety Workers –1 full-time and one .5 post, Salary Scale: £22,001to £24,402, NJC Points 26 to 29 plus on call enhancements, Hours: 35 hrs & 17.5 hours per week including evenings and weekends.

Cheetham United Project is a drop-in centre helping to meet mental health needs in the Cheetham area.

The centre is based at St Johns Church on Waterloo Road, Cheetham Hill, Manchester, and is staffed by a team of dedicated volunteers.

Volunteer tasks include setting up the equipment, and putting equipment away after the session; providing food and refreshments to visitors; befriending and supporting visitors.

Volunteering Opportunity for young people - Forever Manchester Radio Show

The Community Foundation for Greater Manchester launched a new fundraising and awareness campaign in January 2009 - Forever Manchester.

The campaign involves a weekly 3 hour radio show on Manchester Radio Online, which will be run by young volunteers.

Community Foundation for Greater Manchester is now actively recruiting a team of 10 volunteers aged 16-25 to work with them in creating the show content and develop an audience.

Not only will volunteers get the chance to work on an exciting real media project, but they will also have the opportunity to get a nationally recognised volunteering accreditation. This team is part of the Community Foundation for Greater Manchester's v funded project.

World Wide Workshop - Royal Exchange’s Refugee Theatre Company

Are you a refugee or asylum seeker aged 18 or over? Are you interested in theatre and drama? Would you like to learn new skills and meet new people? Would you like the chance to find out more about drama and theatre?

Royal Exchange’s Refugee Theatre Company will be holding weekly sessions from Thursday 23rd April onwards. All sessions are free, and take place from 6:30pm - 8:30pm at the Royal Exchange Theatre, St Ann’s Square, Manchester. No experience necessary, and no need to book - just turn up.

Consultation - Community Governance Review

Manchester residents and local organisations are invited to comment as part of a review of parish and community governance arrangements within the Manchester City Council local authority area.

What is the consultation about?
The review will consider community governance across the whole of the Manchester area and will also address two specific areas where particular community governance issues have been identified.

The consultation is broken down into three separate parts: the first part is a city-wide consultation, while the second and third parts consult on the future of Ringway Parish, and the establishment of a parish council in part of the Northenden ward.

How can I respond?
Consultation response forms, which are available from the City Council website, or by phone on 0161 234 3998/ 4098, must be returned to:

Manchester City Council Community Governance Review, Democratic Services, Chief Executive's Department, Manchester City Council, Room 401, Town Hall, Manchester, M60 2LA.
