1.0 Network News

1.1 CN4M Grants PANEL MEMBERS NEEDED
CN4M are looking for panel members who maybe interested in joining a pool of
people working with Community Network 4 Manchester's new grants program CN4M
Grants.
We are particularly keen to get representation from the different
communities of interest as well as from different geographical areas within
the City of Manchester reflecting the diversity within the area.
You will have the satisfaction of helping distribute significant amounts of
European money to support worthwhile community and voluntary activity across
the City.
It will give you a fascinating insight into the diversity and range of
voluntary and community activity going on in the City, and an opportunity to
learn or develop skills in assessing projects and working as a team to make
the best decisions.
Panel meetings are held centrally, in an accessible building and
refreshments will be provided. Out of pocket expenses will be paid for
travel, childcare etc.

2.1 Learning in Partnership: training sessions in service user involvement
in
. Do you face challenges in engaging your service users?
. Do you want to learn more about genuine involvement?

GMCVO is organising two subsidised training sessions in service user
involvement to take place this autumn

Training Session 1: Effective Service User Involvement
September 17th 9.30am - 3.30pm atThe Mechanics Institute
Audience: Voluntary sector staff and managers with responsibility for
service user involvement.
Aim: This session will help you develop effective service user involvement
in your organisation. A range of participatory group activities will share
learning on the benefits of service user involvement and tackle issues such
as supporting service users through training, payment and creating the
appropriate environment.
Cost: £15

Training Session 2: Facilitating Service User Involvement
September 27th, 9.30am - 4.30pm at Luther King House
Audience: Voluntary sector staff and managers who want to develop their
skills & confidence in facilitating groups and overcome barriers to
involving service users
Aim: This session will allow you to explore and develop ways of overcoming
barriers to involvement within your organisation. It will also boost your
capacity to facilitate meetings and discussions effectively, and provide you
with some practical tools to develop your facilitation skills.

3.0 Events

3.1 Pedal, Cycle and Road Security Event

Free cycle security products and advice for Manchester residents, workers
and students. There is a pedal cycle and road security event being held in
Albert Square on August 31st prior to the monthly ride.

Police and biking agencies will be fitting free electronic security tags
(you may know them as datatags), giving away locks, offering on-line
registration, property marking kits and general advice. Please come along
with your bike 10:00am to 5:30pm

There are similar events being held throughout the City so keep your eyes on
the local press, the following events have so far been confirmed:

25th August 07, Saturday Crime and Disorder info Stall, Gorton Market 9:30
to 12:00 and Gorton North Family Fun Day, King George V Park 2:00pm to

3.2 Climate Change Conference
"Climate Change: meeting the challenge locally and preparing for the
expected as well as unanticipated" which will be hosted by The House
Magazine on Thursday 25th October 2007 in Westminster.
Delegates at this full-day Westminster Briefing conference will consider the
role local authorities can play in their capacity as services providers,
estate managers and community leaders; participants will examine practical
steps which can be taken across departments and in partnership, to reduce
carbon emissions and put in place sustainable plans to tackle climate
change. Delegates will engage with the panel in a number of sessions looking
at the key issues including:
- The legislative agenda and latest government thinking
- Working in partnership: local authorities, business, the community &
voluntary sector
- Sustainable housing and planning policy
- Transport plans and planning: changing behaviour & offering alternatives
- Waste and recycling Strategies
- Sustainable procurement

3.3 In Touch - Networking Event

Imperial War Museum North has partnered up with Manchester Museum to deliver
a joint innovative Volunteer programme called 'In Touch' specifically
designed to help local people gain work experience, confidence and skills.

The Manchester Museum will be hosting a 'Networking Day' on Tuesday 4th
September 2007 from 1pm until 4pm to introduce the 'In Touch' programme to a
diverse group of organisations in the local community.

This event is a unique opportunity for service providers, agencies and
support workers to find out more about the partnership between The
Manchester Museum and Imperial War Museum North and the 'In Touch' Museum
Volunteer Training Programme.

3.4 North Manchester Social Inclusion Network

Monday 10th September 2007 11.30am - 2 pm at One Central Park, Northampton
Road (Lunch will be provided).

Do you work with people with health problems or support residents? Do you
want to help these people become more socially included? Do you need to
make contacts, develop networks and find out about other agencies?

Come along and listen to informal presentations by Stepping Stones,
Manchester Adult Education Service (MAES) and Next Step providers of
Information, advice and Guidance followed by networking and lunch.

The first network will focus on training and employment support. Anyone
interested in finding out more can sign up to a one-day course later on in
the year.

Suggestions for future themes are welcome.

4.0 Information

4.1 Irwell City Park Planning Guidance Consultation

Irwell City Park is being led by a cross boundary collaboration involving
Manchester City Council, Salford City Council, Trafford Metropolitan Borough
Council and Central Salford Urban Regeneration Company, who have united to
transform one of the North West's most unique waterways.

Planning Guidance is being prepared to support the delivery of Irwell City
Park. The Planning Guidance relates to the intention to establish Irwell
City Park as an exciting and unique waterfront location within the Regional
Centre.
The draft Planning Guidance will be subject to public consultation from
Friday 17 August 2007 until 4.30pm on Thursday 27 September 2007 and can be
viewed via the websites of the three Councils:

4.2 Manchester Carers Centre Alcohol/Drugs & Dual Diagnosis Carers Support
Group

Tuesday 4th September 2007 from 12pm - 2pm Manchester Carers Centre, Beswick
House, Beswick Row, Manchester M4 4PR


This group has been set up to reach "hidden" Carers -those who ordinarily do
not class themselves as Carers.
They would identify themselves as Partners, Parents, Relatives or Friends of
people with alcohol/drug problems, or people with substance use and mental
health problems. As well as a chance to meet others in similar situations,
share experiences & information with each other, Carers Centre Staff will
facilitate the group in partnership with Manchester Drugs Service Family &
Carers Development Worker who will be available to help us provide a range
of support services.

4.3 Give Us Your Views on Stroke Services in Manchester
Manchester Health Watchdog is working in partnership with Manchester
Alliance for Community Care, Manchester Primary Care Trust, Manchester Adult
Social Care and PPI Forums to produce a city-wide response to the Department
of Health "A New Ambition for Stroke" consultation.
Members have already started work to gather views and experiences of Stroke
services in Manchester and on the 4 aspects as identified in the
consultation document.
The aim is to gather experiences, comments and view from as wide and as
diversely as possible - this will allow the people of Manchester to have
their say on how they believe Stroke services should be delivered locally.
You can share with us your experiences of Stroke services by completing a
questionnaire or just give us your comments and views on one of the
sections - it is up to you. There is also an easy access version available
from the Forum Support Office below:
