1.0 Network News

1.1 CN4M Celebrating Success Event, Friday 26th September 2008. We will be holding an event to celebrate the successes of our networks, reveal our new look and promote our new magazine.

1.2 Manchester's Online Community Directory (MOCD). CN4M have recently appointed Mike Wright on a secondment from Novas Scarman Group to project manage the further development of Manchester's Online Community Directory. MOCD is an online directory which provides voluntary and community sector (VCS) groups in Manchester with the opportunity to promote their details to a wider audience and make contact with similar groups to network/share good practice.

It is FREE to get your group's details listed on the directory. 1.3 Date for your diaries - CN4M Annual General Meeting, Tuesday 7th October 2008. CN4M's Annual General Meeting, originally proposed to take place on Tuesday 23rd September, will now take place on Tuesday 7th October. The venue, timings and paperwork will be circulated on Tuesday 16th September.





1.4 Flexible New Deal and the Voluntary Sector - LSEN VCS Meeting.

The Learning Skills and Employment Network (LSEN) are holding a meeting to update their members about the changes in the benefit system taking place through the introduction of the Flexible New Deal by the DWP and JCP. 2.0 Training

2.1 Volunteering and Ex-offenders Workshop - NEARIS. Work with volunteers? Interested in improving access to volunteering? Working to support ex-offenders to move forwards?

Date: Thu 30th October 2008

Location: Manchester

This free one day workshop is a chance to discuss these issues with other practitioners. Local charity NEARIS has been conducting research into the volunteering journey of ex-offenders in Greater Manchester and you will hear some of the volunteer stories on the day. 3.1 5th Annual North West Public Health Conference 2008. Creating capital for a world class public health system in our region.

Dates: 13th & 14th October 2008
Venue: BT Convention Centre, Liverpool

3.2 Café Politique - Your Say: Putting The Public Into Policy.

Date/ Time: Monday 22nd September, 6.30 to 8.30pm.
Location: central Manchester (a few minutes walk from GMEX centre)

This event, hosted by Terry Christian, provides a unique space for the public to have a say on what matters to them, in tandem with politicians and others debating issues at the Labour Party conference 2008. This discussion and debate will explore topics such as high house prices, healthcare, rising food costs, our children's futures and climate change. 3.3 Public Pro TIF / Congestion Charge Group Meeting.

Date/ Time: Thursday 18th September 2008, 7:00pm - 9:00pm
Venue: Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street, Manchester.

'GO! Greater Manchester' is a coalition of local residents working to support a YES vote in the referendum on congestion charging on 11th December 2008.
Join them at the official launch to discuss the aims and objectives of the group and help plan the work that they will carry out in the run up to the referendum.

3.4 North Manchester Refugee Integration Forum Meeting.

To promote community cohesion and integration; change negative attitudes and perceptions held about refugees and asylum seekers to more positive ones; raise awareness of refugee and asylum issues.

3.5 Communities in Space: The Final Frontier. How to make your community hub accessible & welcoming to all...
Date/ Time: Thursday 27th November 2008, 10.30am - 3.00pm
Venue: GMCVO, St Thomas Centre, Manchester
This is a special FREE event for volunteers and workers from Greater Manchester's community hubs. A hub is a place of neighbourhood activity - it could be community building, space, centre, facility or any other place run by a not-for-profit group. There will be a focus on ways to make sure your hub is accessible, welcoming and open to everyone in your community. 3.6 Living Well in a Low Energy World - Public event on Cuban Sustainability and how Cuba survived Peak Oil.

With Cuban biologist and permaculturist Roberto Perez who featured in the film called The Power of Community, and is touring the UK in September. He will talk on Cuba's transition to organic urban agriculture and the community response to radical change.

3.7 Manchester Full of Life Festival. The country's biggest celebration of older people is back bigger than ever! A must for your diaries, the free festival will run for a full two weeks (from 29th September 2008 until 10th October 2008, at various venues across the city).

Back by popular demand, the Big Event at Manchester Town Hall will take place on Tuesday 30th September.
In addition to the usual information stalls and entertainments room, there will be the opportunity to try your hand at line dancing, Nintendo Wii and Egyptian dancing. When exhausted, why not relax in the Pamper Room or try some brand new activities, which are still a closely guarded secret!

4.0 Information

4.1 Community Awards 2008. Manchester City Council knows that there are lots of people working hard to improve life in our communities, and the Community Awards are a great way of recognising those local heroes, and the difference they make.
If you know of, or work with, someone who volunteers their time to make improvements to - or someone who makes a positive impact upon - the community, why not nominate them for The Community Awards 2008? You can nominate anyone who lives or works within Manchester city's boundaries, and it's easy to do. There are eight award categories in total. 4.3 Training/meeting rooms for hire. Six rooms of different sizes are available to hire for meetings and training at Shakespeare House, in Fallowfield at £10 per hour.

4.4 'How Your Council Works' guide. Urban Forum launched a new handy guide for community groups - How Your Council Works - on Monday 8th September. 'How Your Council Works' describes, in a straightforward and readable style, the functions of your local authority and how to get involved.

The guide is produced by Urban Forum, NAVCA and IDeA, with the support of the National Empowerment Partnership. The guide is available at: http://www.urbanforum.org.uk/pubs/index.html





4.5 Community Inspired Regeneration Awards. Recognising grassroots projects making a difference to their local area, and sponsored by Communities and Local Government for a third year running, these awards celebrate best practice in community inspired and led regeneration in urban and rural areas across the United Kingdom.

4.6 Small grants for groups to promote sustainable transport in Manchester. The Transport Thematic Partnership is inviting voluntary and community sector groups to bid into a small grants pot for projects which promote sustainable transport. Please note that projects have to be wholly within the City of Manchester, run by organisations also based within the city. 4.7 Infrastructure support services questionnaire. Manchester City Council has produced a questionnaire to gather information about the infrastructure support services being used by Voluntary and Community Sector Organisations and identify where there may be gaps in provision. The information provided will be used to inform the next commissioning process to invite tenders for this work.

Transport Innovation Fund/Congestion Charge survey. GMCVO's Transport Resource Unit is still canvassing VCS opinions on the Transport Innovation Fund proposals (improvements in public transport paid for in part by a limited congestion charge).

Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations. The Department for Transport is seeking input on: Local Transport Bill - Consultation on bus partnership guidance and regulations.

The Local Transport Bill includes measures to promote more effective partnership working between local authorities and bus operators, including through voluntary partnership agreements and quality partnership schemes. The Department has published a consultation on the draft Guidance which it is proposing to issue, and drafts of Regulations which it is proposing to make, assuming the Bill receives Royal Assent.

5.1 NEARIS - Charity Administrator. Salary: NJC points 19-24, £17,000 - £21,000 depending on experience. The 2007-08 salary levels for these points are £16,536-£20,099, but a standard of living award is pending for 2008-09); Hours: 35 hours per week; Location: Manchester City Centre.

NEARIS is a friendly and interesting charity which provides education and training to adults on the margins of society. You will be assisting the Chief Executive with a wide range of administrative and financial duties. Experience of administration work is essential, as is a confident ability with written and spoken communication. Training will be provided on the technical aspects of the role (e.g. the computerised accounts package) but you will need to be confident with numbers. 5.2 Contour Housing - Community Development Worker.

Salary: circa £22,000, Full Time, 3 years Fixed term contract, Ref: 41-08.

You will work in partnership with local structures, residents and tenants of Broughton (East Salford), community groups and relevant organisations to maintain existing community initiatives, as well as to encourage and develop sustainable initiatives for the future.

5.3 Autistic Society Greater Manchester Area (ASGMA) - 2 Vacancies

Fundraiser. Salary: £17,000 - £19,000 (dependant on proven successes and experience), Hours: 35 hours per week - flexible working. Contract: one year fixed term, contract negotiable after first year.
This will be a new position for ASGMA and the ASGMA Fundraiser will work closely with the Chief Executive in developing community fundraising initiatives, developing links with groups, clubs and associations - as well as developing, encouraging and supporting fundraising volunteers.



Admin Officer. Salary: £13,336-£15,470 pro rata dependant on qualifications and experience (£10,668-£12,376 actual). Hours of Work: 28 hours per week to be worked flexibly in agreement with the postholder (this can include school hours).

The Admin Officer will support the Administration and Finance operation of ASGMA. The role includes the provision of comprehensive administrative support and financial bookkeeping support as well as ensuring the upkeep of a small Resource Centre and running a room booking system.

5.4 Young Advisors - Development Manager.

5.5 Lesbian Community Project - Project Co-ordinator. Salary: £24,670, Hours: 35 hours per week. Contract: until March 2009 initially.

Manchester Lesbian Community Project (LCP) are looking to recruit a Project Co-ordinator with experience of community development work and people management. You will need to have excellent communication skills and knowledge and experience of issues affecting lesbian and bisexual women. You will have responsibility for the day to day operations of the Project and will input into the strategic development of the Project in conjunction with the Board of Trustees.
