1.1 CN4M Re-brand meeting- last chance to be involved! Following the consultation meeting which took place two weeks ago, UHC will present the outcome of the first stage of the design process, and you will get a chance to vote for the logo concept and strap line you would like them to develop into a finished logo. Please come along and tell them what you think! There is no need to book a place, and everyone is welcome to attend.

1.2 Voluntary Sector Meeting. Are you a larger voluntary sector organisation? Do you deliver services? Do you want or need to know more about Local Area Agreements? What do you think is an 'Environment for a Thriving Third Sector'? Are you interested in where organisations in the city influence policy sub-regionally?

If your answer is yes to any of these questions or you feel you might like to attend in any case, there will be a meeting on the 12th June 2008, starting at 10 am, at the Green Fish Resource Centre, lasting for about two hours followed by a networking lunch.

2.1 Live and Learn- free training at Imperial War Museum North. Do you ever visit museums and other heritage sites with your group? Does the question, 'what would I do there?' cross your mind? If the idea of bringing your group to a museum sounds a bit boring and you think you wouldn't know what to do, then Imperial War Museum North can help! A FREE short course, called Live and Learn, is available with friendly faces on hand to guide you through what you could do at a museum and how to achieve the most from a visit. It will give you the confidence and skills to lead your group on a visit, from booking to resources and what to do afterwards. 2.2 Free training- Capacity Building. As part of their Capacity Building project, South Manchester Regeneration Team are providing free training to voluntary and community groups this summer. The training sessions will cover: Effective work planning; Fundraising; Supervision and appraisal of staff; Business planning. The sessions will be facilitated by their consultant Jonny Wineberg and are open to all community and voluntary groups providing services to the community in south and central Manchester. 2.3 Public Contract Opportunities - A New Approach: training. The country's leading tendering and procurement training organisation for the third and small business sectors TfC won the contract to deliver procurement training to these sectors for up-coming DWP programmes. The programme will offer a series of training events throughout the UK (including Manchester) during June 2008. The events are designed to help organisations and businesses to tender or sub-contract effectively for public sector contracts. There will be an emphasis on the development of supply chains designed to allow smaller organisations to contribute to the delivery of services. The training will focus in particular on helping organisations to engage in programmes managed by the Department for Work and Pensions such as Flexible New Deal. 2.4 Working with Offenders- Free training session for staff /volunteers. Do you work in adult education or support work? Want to find out more about the issues facing service users who are offenders under supervision in the community? This professional development training session is run by local charity NEARIS which specialises in education for offenders and other disadvantaged adults in the community. The course will cover: introduction to the criminal justice system; managing risk; models of change and motivation; and an overview of services available in Greater Manchester.

2.5 Introduction to Photoshop course- Manchester Women's Electronic Village Hall. The course should allow you to qualify for the eDCC beginner's certificate in image editing. It is due to run for 3 consecutive Mondays: 16th 23rd and 30th June, from 9.30am to 3.00pm. The course fee is £100.00 per person.

2.6 Employer Supported Volunteering Workshop. Volunteer Centre Warrington is delivering a one day Employer Supported Volunteering workshop. This is a brand new training module from the Excellence in Volunteer Management programme from Volunteering England. The workshop will enable learners to engage employers and employer supported volunteers effectively in the work of their organisation. Cost: £99.00 per person

3.1 Cultivating Communities Conference - The Green and Clean agenda. Cultivating Communities is the Annual Conference of North West Together We Can, organised in conjunction with the Seedley and Langworthy Trust, and Salford City Council. The Conference will be showcasing the best of community-led environmental initiatives and partnership projects in Salford and across the North West. This is a free event, but there will be a £30 non-attendance fee. Places are limited to two people per organisation.

3.3 Free VCS Crime Forum. FAO residents of South Manchester. Do you have a problem with crime in your neighbourhood? Community Safety Network (CSN) are the voluntary/community sector representative on the Crime and Disorder Partnership and can help you tackle your local community safety needs. They guarantee feedback on all the issues you raise and will help get your priorities addressed at a senior level. Come along- have your say. Booking Only- places limited to 30.

3.4 Free Social Enterprise Education and the Global Dimension conference. The aims of the event are to: Explain how (social) enterprise education supports the Global Dimension, and how GD strengthens enterprise education; Showcase case-studies and activities run successfully by participants; Explain what else the Global Dimension supports (e.g. key skills, citizenship, Every Child Matters, etc); Discuss challenges and successes in delivering enterprise & GD education; Cover how to run these activities in your own region; Plan for a NWGEN (North West Global Education Network) event for 2009. Speakers are welcome to run 15 - 30 minute workshops based around teaching the Global Dimension through (social) enterprise education.

3.5 North West Participation Workers 4th Annual Conference. The provisional programme includes speakers Nigel Burke (GONW) and Nicky Horn, Regional manager (CWDC), and presentations on: Wecan2 project (Young people led research into barriers to local participation structures for young people with a learning disability - Paul Smithson), Youth Engagement Research (Dan Moxon, NWRYWU & young people from Liverpool Engagement Team), CROA/NYAS (Members of NYAS YP Advisory Group will show a DVD produced by looked after children and young people and talk about how the DVD can help reassure children & young people entering the care system). Cost per delegate - £40 for members of PWN NW, £50 for non-members. There are several bursaries available for small voluntary sector / community groups (please contact NWRYWU for more information).

3.6 Carers Week 2008. The countdown to this year's Carers Week 2008 event is well and truly underway. It is the biggest partnership event of the year to showcase carers' services in Manchester. For one day only, carers and professionals alike can find out all they need to know about all things 'carer' under one roof.

3.7 The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment A Reality In Every Community. On the 19th October 2007, the Department for Communities and Local Government produced an action plan to increase community empowerment. 'An Action Plan for Community Empowerment: Building on Success' highlights what can be done to build on the examples from around the country of local authority best practice in community empowerment. "The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment a Reality in Every Community" will examine how authorities will be given increasingly greater control over their communities. 3.8 Refugee Week 2008. Taking place across the whole of the month of June, Manchester's Refugee Week programme of events and activities provides: an opportunity to meet people from all of Manchester's diverse communities; a celebration of Manchester's proud tradition of offering safety, support and sanctuary; a chance to understand why refugees come to Manchester. Most events are free, so bring your friends and family and enjoy Manchester's vibrant culture.

3.9 Feast! Picnic by the Lake. Giant picnic event round the lakeside with live entertainment. All welcome- all weekend! You bring the picnic (plus decorations, costumes, lanterns and candles), and entertainment from around the world will be provided (as well as several thousand picnic tables and chairs). Non-stop music, street theatre, dance, strolling performers, activities and games. Many different styles of food available to buy. The event is FREE.

3.10 Didsbury Open Gardens Afternoon (part of the Didsbury festival weekend). As part of the Didsbury Open Gardens Afternoon, Paupers wood will be open from 12pm - 5pm, entry will be free- as with Bradley Fold allotments and Fletcher Moss Gardens (free parking will be available at Siemens car park opposite the wood). Feel free to bring a picnic with you and enjoy the wood for yourself. To visit the private gardens you will need to buy a programme (cost £5). Proceeds will go to St Anne's hospice. Programme/Ticket £5.00 per Adult (Children Under 5 Free).

4.0 Information

4.1 The Peter Kershaw Trust is seeking applications for the Peter Kershaw Memorial Bursary. Peter Kershaw, the ex-chairman of Joseph Holt brewery, who died in 2000, set up his trust partly to benefit disadvantaged young people. To commemorate him, the Trustees established a bursary to fund the costs of a youth leader. Organisations with charitable status in Greater Manchester are invited to apply for the bursary, which will be awarded on the basis of up £25,000 for year 1, £15,000 for year 2 and £10,000 for year 3. Priority will be given to organisations that can show a firm shared element of funding beyond year 1 and where the appointment creates new opportunities. Deadline for applications: 30th September 2008.

Applications should be made in writing to the Secretary (22 Ashworth Park, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 9DE). The application should take the form of a short reasoned statement and be accompanied by a detailed budget for the proposal and a copy of the latest audited accounts.





4.2 ALL FM/ Barclays Community Awards. Are you a Manchester based community project or charity that requires a little financial help? What could you do with £500? ALL FM and Barclays have joined forces for the second year running to bring the Community Awards to Manchester. They want to reward some of the good work and vital services you provide to your community by offering you the chance to receive a £500 cash grant to support your project. Entering couldn't be easier, just visit www.allfm.org and follow the link from the front page. The deadline for ALL FM and Barclays Community Awards is midnight 21st June.





4.3 AGMA: Greater Manchester Grants Scheme- applications for one off funding. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) considers applications for one off grants of up to £10,000 from the voluntary sector whose services cover most of Greater Manchester. Funding is available for projects in the areas of culture (in its broadest sense), education and young people, social and community cohesion, economic development and job creation. Applicants must be properly constituted voluntary sector organisations and provide a countywide service to Greater Manchester. The next deadline for receipt of applications is 31st July 2008 for consideration on 14th November 2008, then 31st October 2008 for consideration in February 2009. 4.4 Urban Forum's Annual Conference - Poverty Theme. The theme of Poverty will shape Urban Forum's Annual Conference in Manchester in early December. They want Urban Forum members to help them showcase the best of what they do to challenge poverty. 4.5 Report from LSEN Adult Informal Learning Consultation Event. Over 25 representatives from a range of different organistions involved in adult informal learning met at Salford Museum on the 29th May to put together a formal response to the DIUS consultation which concludes on the 12th June (see http://www.adultlearningconsultation.org.uk/ for further information). The LSEN will be submitting their comments by the 12th June - please email any thoughts you may have to walt.crowson@ntlworld.com before this date.

A national campaign to save Adult Education has been established independently by a group of learners - please visit http://www.saveadulteducation.co.uk/ for further information. Campaign members believe the consultation is a prelude to a new wave of cuts and urge you to get involved in saving adult education. They explain that the Government wants to spend more money on providing vocational courses for 16+ adults, however, in order to do so they intend to take money away from "non-vocational" education - i.e. day and evening classes for adults which don't lead to qualifications. 4.6 Petition calls for national Social Enterprise Mark. Kent social enterprise, The Sunlight Trust, has developed an online petition to lobby for the national roll out of the Social Enterprise Mark and are encouraging others to sign-up. The Social Enterprise Mark is a label that tells customers that a product or service comes from a social enterprise. The Social Enterprise Mark is the only label of its kind that is open to all types of social enterprises that successfully meet the qualification criteria. It means the growing number of social enterprises can gain widespread recognition amongst customers and enable them to take advantage of business opportunities presented by the growing ethical consumerism trend. 4.7 Community Empowerment Network (CEN) Research Report. Urban Forum has recently published research into the current state of Community Empowerment Networks (CENs). The research report explores the impact of new Local Area Agreements (LAAs) on CENs. The following are some of the findings of the research: 1/4 of CENs are doing less empowerment work, at the same time empowerment is rising to the top of the Government's policy agenda; Up to 40% of CENs are set to lose funding; 48% of CENs will be carrying out less outreach work; 47% of CENs will carry out less neighbourhood work. 4.8 Joseph Rowntree Foundation Research Report- Community Leadership approaches to tackling street crime. 4.9 Consultation- Participatory Budgeting: a draft national strategy. Giving more people a say in local spending Consultation - Department for Communities and Local Government. The purpose of this consultation is to seek views on the draft Participatory Budgeting Strategy. Specifically, the document seeks views on the strategy as a plan to achieve the Government's ambition for participatory budgeting to be used in all local authority areas by 2012. 4.10 Volunteering Opportunities- Northmoor Live At Home Scheme. Can you spare a couple of hours a week? Northmoor Live At Home Scheme is looking for volunteers to support older people in the community by becoming a Befriender; to help them from 10.30am -2.15pm every Tuesday at their luncheon club; or to help with the Monday shopping trip (Mondays 10-2pm). This will give you experience in working with older people. You must be caring; a good listener; and be able to empathise with older people. The Scheme is looking to expand the services it offers and more help will be needed.

1.1 CN4M Re-brand meeting- last chance to be involved! Following the consultation meeting which took place two weeks ago, UHC will present the outcome of the first stage of the design process, and you will get a chance to vote for the logo concept and strap line you would like them to develop into a finished logo. 2.1 Live and Learn- free training at Imperial War Museum North. Do you ever visit museums and other heritage sites with your group? Does the question, 'what would I do there?' cross your mind? If the idea of bringing your group to a museum sounds a bit boring and you think you wouldn't know what to do, then Imperial War Museum North can help! A FREE short course, called Live and Learn, is available with friendly faces on hand to guide you through what you could do at a museum and how to achieve the most from a visit. It will give you the confidence and skills to lead your group on a visit, from booking to resources and what to do afterwards. 2.2 Free training- Capacity Building. As part of their Capacity Building project, South Manchester Regeneration Team are providing free training to voluntary and community groups this summer. The training sessions will cover: Effective work planning; Fundraising; Supervision and appraisal of staff; Business planning. 2.3 Public Contract Opportunities - A New Approach: training. The country's leading tendering and procurement training organisation for the third and small business sectors TfC won the contract to deliver procurement training to these sectors for up-coming DWP programmes. The programme will offer a series of training events throughout the UK (including Manchester) during June 2008. The events are designed to help organisations and businesses to tender or sub-contract effectively for public sector contracts. There will be an emphasis on the development of supply chains designed to allow smaller organisations to contribute to the delivery of services. The training will focus in particular on helping organisations to engage in programmes managed by the Department for Work and Pensions such as Flexible New Deal. 2.4 Working with Offenders- Free training session for staff /volunteers. Do you work in adult education or support work? Want to find out more about the issues facing service users who are offenders under supervision in the community? This professional development training session is run by local charity NEARIS which specialises in education for offenders and other disadvantaged adults in the community. The course will cover: introduction to the criminal justice system; managing risk; models of change and motivation; and an overview of services available in Greater Manchester.

2.5 Introduction to Photoshop course- Manchester Women's Electronic Village Hall. The course should allow you to qualify for the eDCC beginner's certificate in image editing. 2.6 Employer Supported Volunteering Workshop. Volunteer Centre Warrington is delivering a one day Employer Supported Volunteering workshop. This is a brand new training module from the Excellence in Volunteer Management programme from Volunteering England. The workshop will enable learners to engage employers and employer supported volunteers effectively in the work of their organisation. Cost: £99.00 per person

3.1 Cultivating Communities Conference - The Green and Clean agenda. Cultivating Communities is the Annual Conference of North West Together We Can, organised in conjunction with the Seedley and Langworthy Trust, and Salford City Council. The Conference will be showcasing the best of community-led environmental initiatives and partnership projects in Salford and across the North West. This is a free event, but there will be a £30 non-attendance fee. Places are limited to two people per organisation.

3.3 Free VCS Crime Forum. FAO residents of South Manchester. Do you have a problem with crime in your neighbourhood? Community Safety Network (CSN) are the voluntary/community sector representative on the Crime and Disorder Partnership and can help you tackle your local community safety needs. 3.4 Free Social Enterprise Education and the Global Dimension conference. The aims of the event are to: Explain how (social) enterprise education supports the Global Dimension, and how GD strengthens enterprise education; Showcase case-studies and activities run successfully by participants; Explain what else the Global Dimension supports (e.g. key skills, citizenship, Every Child Matters, etc); Discuss challenges and successes in delivering enterprise & GD education; Cover how to run these activities in your own region; Plan for a NWGEN (North West Global Education Network) event for 2009. Speakers are welcome to run 15 - 30 minute workshops based around teaching the Global Dimension through (social) enterprise education.

3.5 North West Participation Workers 4th Annual Conference. The provisional programme includes speakers Nigel Burke (GONW) and Nicky Horn, Regional manager (CWDC), and presentations on: Wecan2 project (Young people led research into barriers to local participation structures for young people with a learning disability - Paul Smithson), Youth Engagement Research (Dan Moxon, NWRYWU & young people from Liverpool Engagement Team), CROA/NYAS (Members of NYAS YP Advisory Group will show a DVD produced by looked after children and young people and talk about how the DVD can help reassure children & young people entering the care system). 3.6 Carers Week 2008. The countdown to this year's Carers Week 2008 event is well and truly underway. It is the biggest partnership event of the year to showcase carers' services in Manchester. 3.7 The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment A Reality In Every Community. On the 19th October 2007, the Department for Communities and Local Government produced an action plan to increase community empowerment. 'An Action Plan for Community Empowerment: Building on Success' highlights what can be done to build on the examples from around the country of local authority best practice in community empowerment. "The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment a Reality in Every Community" will examine how authorities will be given increasingly greater control over their communities. 3.9 Feast! Picnic by the Lake. Giant picnic event round the lakeside with live entertainment. All welcome- all weekend! You bring the picnic (plus decorations, costumes, lanterns and candles), and entertainment from around the world will be provided (as well as several thousand picnic tables and chairs). Non-stop music, street theatre, dance, strolling performers, activities and games. Many different styles of food available to buy. The event is FREE.

3.10 Didsbury Open Gardens Afternoon (part of the Didsbury festival weekend). As part of the Didsbury Open Gardens Afternoon, Paupers wood will be open from 12pm - 5pm, entry will be free- as with Bradley Fold allotments and Fletcher Moss Gardens (free parking will be available at Siemens car park opposite the wood). Feel free to bring a picnic with you and enjoy the wood for yourself. To visit the private gardens you will need to buy a programme (cost £5). Proceeds will go to St Anne's hospice. 4.0 Information

4.1 The Peter Kershaw Trust is seeking applications for the Peter Kershaw Memorial Bursary. Peter Kershaw, the ex-chairman of Joseph Holt brewery, who died in 2000, set up his trust partly to benefit disadvantaged young people. To commemorate him, the Trustees established a bursary to fund the costs of a youth leader. Organisations with charitable status in Greater Manchester are invited to apply for the bursary, which will be awarded on the basis of up £25,000 for year 1, £15,000 for year 2 and £10,000 for year 3. Priority will be given to organisations that can show a firm shared element of funding beyond year 1 and where the appointment creates new opportunities. Deadline for applications: 30th September 2008.

Applications should be made in writing to the Secretary (22 Ashworth Park, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 9DE). The application should take the form of a short reasoned statement and be accompanied by a detailed budget for the proposal and a copy of the latest audited accounts.





4.2 ALL FM/ Barclays Community Awards. Are you a Manchester based community project or charity that requires a little financial help? What could you do with £500? ALL FM and Barclays have joined forces for the second year running to bring the Community Awards to Manchester. They want to reward some of the good work and vital services you provide to your community by offering you the chance to receive a £500 cash grant to support your project. 4.3 AGMA: Greater Manchester Grants Scheme- applications for one off funding. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) considers applications for one off grants of up to £10,000 from the voluntary sector whose services cover most of Greater Manchester. Funding is available for projects in the areas of culture (in its broadest sense), education and young people, social and community cohesion, economic development and job creation. Applicants must be properly constituted voluntary sector organisations and provide a countywide service to Greater Manchester. The next deadline for receipt of applications is 31st July 2008 for consideration on 14th November 2008, then 31st October 2008 for consideration in February 2009. 4.4 Urban Forum's Annual Conference - Poverty Theme. The theme of Poverty will shape Urban Forum's Annual Conference in Manchester in early December. They want Urban Forum members to help them showcase the best of what they do to challenge poverty. 4.5 Report from LSEN Adult Informal Learning Consultation Event. Over 25 representatives from a range of different organistions involved in adult informal learning met at Salford Museum on the 29th May to put together a formal response to the DIUS consultation which concludes on the 12th June (see http://www.adultlearningconsultation.org.uk/ for further information). The LSEN will be submitting their comments by the 12th June - please email any thoughts you may have to walt.crowson@ntlworld.com before this date.

A national campaign to save Adult Education has been established independently by a group of learners - please visit http://www.saveadulteducation.co.uk/ for further information. Campaign members believe the consultation is a prelude to a new wave of cuts and urge you to get involved in saving adult education. They explain that the Government wants to spend more money on providing vocational courses for 16+ adults, however, in order to do so they intend to take money away from "non-vocational" education - i.e. day and evening classes for adults which don't lead to qualifications. 4.6 Petition calls for national Social Enterprise Mark. Kent social enterprise, The Sunlight Trust, has developed an online petition to lobby for the national roll out of the Social Enterprise Mark and are encouraging others to sign-up. The Social Enterprise Mark is a label that tells customers that a product or service comes from a social enterprise. The Social Enterprise Mark is the only label of its kind that is open to all types of social enterprises that successfully meet the qualification criteria. It means the growing number of social enterprises can gain widespread recognition amongst customers and enable them to take advantage of business opportunities presented by the growing ethical consumerism trend. 4.7 Community Empowerment Network (CEN) Research Report. Urban Forum has recently published research into the current state of Community Empowerment Networks (CENs). The research report explores the impact of new Local Area Agreements (LAAs) on CENs. The following are some of the findings of the research: 1/4 of CENs are doing less empowerment work, at the same time empowerment is rising to the top of the Government's policy agenda; Up to 40% of CENs are set to lose funding; 48% of CENs will be carrying out less outreach work; 47% of CENs will carry out less neighbourhood work. 4.9 Consultation- Participatory Budgeting: a draft national strategy. Giving more people a say in local spending Consultation - Department for Communities and Local Government. The purpose of this consultation is to seek views on the draft Participatory Budgeting Strategy. Specifically, the document seeks views on the strategy as a plan to achieve the Government's ambition for participatory budgeting to be used in all local authority areas by 2012. 4.10 Volunteering Opportunities- Northmoor Live At Home Scheme. Can you spare a couple of hours a week? Northmoor Live At Home Scheme is looking for volunteers to support older people in the community by becoming a Befriender; to help them from 10.30am -2.15pm every Tuesday at their luncheon club; or to help with the Monday shopping trip (Mondays 10-2pm). This will give you experience in working with older people. You must be caring; a good listener; and be able to empathise with older people. The Scheme is looking to expand the services it offers and more help will be needed.
