1.0 Network News
1.1 CN4M Strategy Group Meeting and Papers
The next Strategy Group meeting will be held on Tuesday 18th March 2008.
Due to room shortages at Green Fish Resource Centre the meeting will be held
at Cross Street Chapel (Manchester M2 1NL) at the usual time (5.30- 8.00
pm).

1.2 CN4M out of office- Wednesday 19th March
CN4M staff will be attending a training Away Day on Wednesday 19th March and

1.3 Community Network for Manchester (CN4M) Re- Brand
CN4M is seeking a new brand identity as part of its relaunch as an
independent organisation.

Please come along and help us shortlist the artist or graphic designer that
will be responsible for developing our brand identity. This is an exciting
opportunity to be involved in the development of our identity from the start
of the process.

The short listing will be on Monday 17th March 2008. If you would like to

1.4 Community Safety Network (CSN) re-launch event- places still
available
The Community Safety Network is changing. Over the past 6-years, the CSN has
worked hard to get your views heard at a statutory level. However, this
process has not always been as effective as they would have liked.
The CSN would like to invite you to their last ever conference where they
will be unveiling their new look delivery plan and showing you how they are
ready to campaign for big changes. The day will focus on 'Promoting The
Vision', a first-hand briefing on 'The New CDRP Strategy' and an explanation
as to how 'Community Call For Action' can work for you. Special Guests to be

2.0 Training
2.1 Manchester Front Line Training Programme - FREE Workshops
Manchester City Council, Salford City Council and Trafford Council working
in partnership with the Department for Work and Pensions and Manchester
Solutions are now in a position to provide FREE Training for customer facing
staff working in Voluntary and Community Sector Agencies in the Greater
Manchester area.
The training is designed to assist customer-facing staff in sign posting
customers or clients in line with the councils strategy towards all
residents being able to access training or help with finding employment.
The training is free and will be delivered by Manchester Solutions.
Dates available include Wednesday March 19, Thursday March 20, Tuesday March
25, Tuesday April 1.

2.2 CLES Summer School 2008- Shaping fairer places for the future
"Shaping fairer places is about creating local economic strategies, which
seek to spread out wealth, create economic cohesion and promote social
justice" Neil McInroy, Chief Executive, CLES. This Summer School is designed
to equip delegates with the necessary knowledge, skills and insight into
contemporary governance and policy making to enable them to think to the
future, develop solutions and shape fairer places.

2.3 Workshops for Adult Learners' Week or Learning at Work Day
The Open University in the North West has put together a wide ranging
programme of workshops which can be delivered to groups of staff, volunteers
or learners. Most of these are intended for a general adult audience who
wouldn't be expected to have any prior knowledge of the subject, although
some are most suited to those with level 2 (GCSE level) literacy. Sessions
last from 45 minutes to 2 hours and cover a wide range of topics in the
areas of arts, maths, languages, business studies and study skills.

2.4 Computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Programme- now
available in East Manchester
A computerised Cognitive Behavioural Therapy programme called 'Beating the
Blues' is now available at East City Library at MANCAT (Openshaw campus) on
Tuesdays from 2.30pm to 6.30pm. The programme consists of an introductory
video and 8 sixty-minute sessions, which incorporate best practice in
cognitive and behavioural therapy (CBT) delivered through a computer based
multi-media package. 'Beating the Blues' helps people to understand the
causes and symptoms of anxiety and depression. It also helps them to
identify and change unhelpful ways of thinking and to learn more effective
ways of solving their problems.
This project has been funded by New Deal for Communities in East Manchester
and supported by Manchester Public Health Development Service - part of
Manchester Primary Care Trust.

2.5 Getting a Fair Deal from Contracts
This three-day programme will equip delegates with the knowledge, skills and
attitude to negotiate fairer contracts with public sector agencies. For:
Managers and trustees who may be involved in bidding for, negotiating and
managing contracts and service agreements between voluntary and public
sector agencies.

2.6 Third Sector Peer Coaching Programme for Learning and Skills
This is a new free programme running from March 2008 to March 2009 for Third
Sector providers of learning and skills and Third Sector organisations about
to become providers.
Is your organisation: planning to go through the Learning and Skills
Council's (LSC) Pre Qualification Questionnaire (PQQ)or Invitation to Tender
(ITT) processes; currently involved in these; just got through the PQQ or
succeeded in becoming an LSC-funded Third Sector provider for the first
time; or an existing Third Sector provider that would welcome support around
quality issues and meeting LSC requirements?
Would you like: short-term, tailored support and guidance from a peer coach
who also works in the Third Sector and who has successfully managed the
delivery of learning programmes for the LSC? Then this could be for you!

2.7 Free Partnership Working/Conflict Management Training for East
Manchester VCS groups
East Manchester Community Network are providing free training for local
voluntary and community groups of East Manchester (Gorton North/South,
Newton Heath, Miles Platting, Bradford, Clayton, Ancoats, Openshaw, Beswick)
on the theme of partnership working and conflict management. The training
will cover the importance of partnership working, making partnerships work,
managing and dealing with different types of conflict. Finally this training
will enable local community and voluntary groups to understand each other
better and provide opportunities to network, share information (best
practice) and to build and sustain strong links for future joint working.

3.2 Congestion Charging For Manchester: Bold Or Bonkers? Debate
The Manchester Conservative Policy Forum invites you to debate "Congestion
Charging for Manchester: Bold or Bonkers?"

3.3 Section 106 Agreements Information Session
Planning Aid is an independent charitable organisation funded to support
individuals and community groups with planning related issues who cannot
afford to pay for professional advice. They are working with the Sustainable
Neighbourhoods Pool to provide an information session for community groups
on Section 106 agreements.
This free information session is being held to help clarify the situation
for community groups. It will be lead by professional experienced town
planners and attended by a representative of the Ethical Properties
Foundation who is currently researching the issue of community involvement
in Section 106 agreements.

3.4 Creativity and Innovation for Global Citizenship- Project Launch
Event (funded by Oxfam UK)
The aim of the project is to develop the knowledge and skills base in
innovation, creativity and risk for global citizenship. What competencies
are required in young people to innovate, be creative accept and manage
risk? How can the current educational, political and business interest in
the above agenda be harnessed for the delivery of the global dimension in
schools? How can we work with young people to develop innovation, creativity
and risk acceptance and apply it across the curriculum to such diverse issue
as scientific solutions to climate change, fair trade schools and pupil
voice in the school?

3.6 NEBATA's 10th Annual Conference
North of England Bone Marrow and Thalassaemia Association 10th Annual
Conference. The event is free and is of particular interest to members of
the BME community. The topics covered will be: Blood Transfusion & Blood
Safety, Bone disease and Vitamin D, Awareness of the Screening programme,
Iron chelation therapy - the choices, Survival with Thalassaemia presented
by TIF, Update of Nebata. The conference will begin with registration at
10:00pm and presentations will start at 10:30am. A free Nawaab lunch will be
provided followed by some exciting entertainment. There will also be a

3.8 Public Transport Information Sharing Events For Disabled People
The Greater Manchester Coalition of Disabled People (GMCDP) is holding two
events, on behalf of GMPTE, to give disabled people an opportunity to learn
more about public transport, about recent developments and plans to improve
public transport opportunities.
The events will be held on: Tuesday 18th March, 10am-2pm, at BEVC, Aked
Close, Ardwick, Manchester. Friday 28th March, 10am-4pm, at the Links
Centre, Oldham (this event will include a short performance about transport
issues by the GMCDP young people's group).

Faith Sector For Children, Young People And Families In Manchester-
Conference
Organised by the Child & Family Support Forum (MACC), Voluntary Youth
Manchester and Manchester City Council
Don't miss this opportunity for the voluntary, community and faith sector
(VCFS) and statutory partners to engage with the children, young people and
families strategic agenda, to look at how we they can do things better and
to ensure you are informed, involved and given the opportunity to influence

Reforming the Immigration System for Working with Children
This is a public consultation on the draft Code of Practice for Keeping

Mediacity Consultation
The Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (GMPTE) is consulting
on plans for a new Metrolink service to mediacity:uk- a Salford Quays
development which will include the BBC's new Northern headquarters.
GMPTE is holding a special two day event at The Lowry in Salford Quays from
11am to 7pm on Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th March to answer any questions
about the new Metrolink service to mediacity:uk and to record comments. A
similar event is being held in the GMPTE Online information centre next to
the Piccadilly Gardens Metrolink stop in Manchester on Wednesday 26th and
Thursday 27th March.

4.2 Manchester Compact
A copy of 'Working Together: A Compact for Manchester' is now available in
the 'Publications' section of the CN4M website. The Compact includes the
Codes of Practice in: Funding, Consultation, Volunteering, Inclusion. The
Compact demonstrates a real commitment to working in partnership and
provides a firm framework for effective working relationships between the

4.3 Sustainable Communities Act 2007: A Guide
Guidance is now available on the Sustainable Communities Act which received
Royal Assent on 23rd October 2007. The principal aim of the Act is to
promote the sustainability of local communities by encouraging the economic,
social and environmental well-being of an area. The guide describes the Act
and what will happen next.

5.2 Volunteer Co-Ordinator- MRSN
Job Title: Volunteer Co-ordinator, Part-time (21 hours per week), SO1:

This exciting new post will improve the health and wellbeing of refugees and
asylum seekers in Manchester through the provision of high-quality supported
volunteering opportunities across a range of interesting and wide-ranging
roles within MRSN. Previous experience of supervising and training
volunteers is essential.
The initial contract will run until 31 March 2009 but the Department of
Health is funding this post for three years (April 2008 to March 2011)
through Volunteering England, subject to the availability of funds approved
