1.0 Network News

1.1 Voluntary Sector Meeting. Are you a larger voluntary sector organisation? Do you deliver services? Do you want or need to know more about Local Area Agreements? What do you think is an 'Environment for a Thriving Third Sector'? Are you interested in where organisations in the city influence policy sub-regionally?

If your answer is yes to any of the questions or you feel you might like to attend in any case, there will be a meeting on the 12th June 2008, starting at 10 am, at the Green Fish Resource Centre, lasting for about two hours followed by a networking lunch.

1.2 CN4M Re-Brand meeting. Following the consultation meeting which took place last week, UHC will present the outcome of the first stage of the design process on Thursday 12th June, and you will get a chance to vote for the logo concept and strap line you would like them to develop into a finished logo. Please come along and tell them what you think!

2.0 Training

2.1 Public Contract Opportunities - A New Approach: training. The country's leading tendering and procurement training organisation for the third and small business sectors TfC won the contract to deliver procurement training to these sectors for up-coming DWP programmes. The programme will offer a series of training events throughout the UK (including Manchester) during June 2008. The events are designed to help organisations and businesses to tender or sub-contract effectively for public sector contracts. There will be an emphasis on the development of supply chains designed to allow smaller organisations to contribute to the delivery of services. The training will focus in particular on helping organisations to engage in programmes managed by the Department for Work and Pensions such as Flexible New Deal. 2.2 Working with Offenders- Free training session for staff /volunteers. Do you work in adult education or support work? Want to find out more about the issues facing service users who are offenders under supervision in the community? This professional development training session is run by local charity NEARIS which specialises in education for offenders and other disadvantaged adults in the community. The course will cover: introduction to the criminal justice system; managing risk; models of change and motivation; and an overview of services available in Greater Manchester.

The half day session will be repeated on the 5th June and 1st July in Manchester.

2.3 Introduction to Photoshop course- Manchester Women's Electronic Village Hall. The course should allow you to qualify for the eDCC beginner's certificate in image editing. It is due to run for 3 consecutive Mondays: 16th 23rd and 30th June, from 9.30 am to 3.00. The course fee is £100.00 per person.

2.4 Urban Veg Production: Tools, Techniques and Theory course. A one-day course looking at veg growing in an urban context. The need for more local and regionalised food systems of low energy inputs is becoming very apparent. The UK is densely populated and relatively urbanised, sympathetic to the idea of local food and soon to need it. The course will examine the background to this and draw on the organisers' experiences growing and trading from their Sale site. This will cover topics including: plant raising, tools and equipment, site selection, seasonality, marketing, composting and fertility sources. The course may suit those considering commercial vegetable production, professionals looking at sustainable urban policy, larger allotment producers and those concerned by UK food security issues. Price: £45 (includes lunch).

2.5 Employer Supported Volunteering Workshop. Volunteer Centre Warrington is delivering a one day Employer Supported Volunteering workshop. This is a brand new training module from the Excellence in Volunteer Management programme from Volunteering England. The workshop will enable learners to engage employers and employer supported volunteers effectively in the work of their organisation. Cost: £99.00 per person

3.1 Stronger Neighbourhood Partnerships Event. A National Neighbourhood Management Network Event in Partnership with RENEW Northwest. This event will provide all those working or volunteering with or in neighbourhood partnerships with: An understanding of the importance of strong partnership working in improving our neighbourhoods; Access to relevant examples of peer good practice case studies, highlighting tried and tested techniques for developing effective neighbourhood partnerships; Advice on how to develop stronger neighbourhood partnerships. 3.2 Didsbury Open Gardens Afternoon (part of the Didsbury festival weekend). As part of the Didsbury Open Gardens Afternoon, Paupers wood will be open from 12pm - 5pm, entry will be free- as with Bradley Fold allotments and Fletcher Moss Gardens (free parking will be available at Siemens car park opposite the wood). Feel free to bring a picnic with you and enjoy the wood for yourself. To visit the private gardens you will need to buy a programme (cost £5). Proceeds will go to St Anne's hospice. Programme/Ticket £5.00 per Adult (Children Under 5 Free).

3.3 Social Enterprise Education and the Global Dimension- Free Conference. Do you promote social enterprise or the global dimension in schools? Are you a social enterprise interested in working with schools? The conference will aim to: Explain how social enterprise education supports the global dimension in education, and how both strengthen enterprise education; Showcase activities run by participants and learn from their experiences; Demonstrate how to run these activities in your own region; Explain what else the global dimension supports (such as key skills, citizenship, Every Child Matters); Plan a NWGEN event in 2009 (for example a Social Enterprise and Global Dimension Conference for teachers and social enterprises). Speakers are welcomed to run 15 - 30 minute workshops based around teaching the Global Dimension through (social) enterprise education.

3.4 Refugee Week 2008. Taking place across the whole of the month of June, Manchester's Refugee Week programme of events and activities provides: an opportunity to meet people from all of Manchester's diverse communities; a celebration of Manchester's proud tradition of offering safety, support and sanctuary; a chance to understand why refugees come to Manchester. Most events are free, so bring your friends and family and enjoy Manchester's vibrant culture.

3.5 Tony Wilson Experience- workshops and conversations. The Tony Wilson Experience is a chance for young, talented people with an interest in the creative arts to take part in a non-stop, 24 hour series of workshops and conversations with some of the biggest names from the music industry, art and design, broadcasting, writing, photography and film. Names already confirmed include Steve Coogan, Peter Hook, Stuart Maconie, and many more. Staged in memory of the late broadcaster and cultural entrepreneur, Anthony H Wilson, and supported by Manchester City Council, the event will be inspirational, challenging, and at times experimental.

3.6 North West Participation Workers 4th Annual Conference. The provisional programme includes speakers Nigel Burke (GONW) and Nicky Horn, Regional manager (CWDC), and presentations on: Wecan2 project (Young people led research into barriers to local participation structures for young people with a learning disability - Paul Smithson), Youth Engagement Research (Dan Moxon, NWRYWU & young people from Liverpool Engagement Team), CROA/NYAS (Members of NYAS YP Advisory Group will show a DVD produced by looked after children and YP and talk about how the DVD can help reassure Children & Young People entering the care system). Cost per delegate - £40 for members of PWN NW, £50 for non-members. There are several bursaries available for small voluntary sector / community groups (please contact NWRYWU for more information).

3.7 Manchester Local Involvement Network (LINk) Launch Event. The Manchester Local Involvement Network (LINk) is a network bringing together local people, organisations and groups who want to improve health and social care services in the city. The LINk's main job will be to: Find out what people want; Investigate issues that people raise; Use its statutory powers, when needed, to hold services to account. You are invited to go along and tell them what you want from the NHS and Social Care services. If you can't make the afternoon, you can arrive at 5 pm for some food- the programme will be run in the evening also.

3.8 Carers Week 2008. The countdown to this year's Carers Week 2008 event is well and truly underway. It is the biggest partnership event of the year to showcase carers' services in Manchester. For one day only, carers and professionals alike can find out all they need to know about all things 'carer' under one roof. Last year attracted over 400 people, many of whom were new carers who were introduced to a new world of support and information.

3.9 Cultivating Communities Conference- advance notice. 'Cultivating Communities' is a Regional Conference showcasing the best of community led environmental initiatives and partnership projects in Salford and across the North West. A host of inspirational workshops will explore good practice in developing the Cleaner and Greener agenda in local communities. This Conference is the Annual Conference of Northwest Together We Can and is being organised by the Seedley and Langworthy Trust, Salford City Council Neighbourhood Management and is supported by Community Northwest, Guide Neighbourhoods, Manchester Metropolitan University and others to be confirmed.

3.10 Feast! Picnic by the Lake. Giant picnic event round the lakeside with live entertainment. All welcome- all weekend! You bring the picnic (plus decorations, costumes, lanterns and candles), and entertainment from around the world will be provided (as well as several thousand picnic tables and chairs). Non-stop music, street theatre, dance, strolling performers, activities and games. Many different styles of food available to buy. The event is FREE.

3.11 The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment A Reality In Every Community. On the 19th October 2007, the Department for Communities and Local Government produced an action plan to increase community empowerment. 'An Action Plan for Community Empowerment: Building on Success' highlights what can be done to build on the examples from around the country of local authority best practice in community empowerment. "The Empowerment Action Plan: Making Empowerment a Reality in Every Community" will examine how authorities will be given increasingly greater control over their communities. 4.1 Petition calls for national Social Enterprise Mark. Kent social enterprise, The Sunlight Trust, has developed an online petition to lobby for the national roll out of the Social Enterprise Mark and are encouraging others to sign-up. The Social Enterprise Mark is a label that tells customers that a product or service comes from a social enterprise. The Social Enterprise Mark is the only label of its kind that is open to all types of social enterprises that successfully meet the qualification criteria. It means the growing number of social enterprises can gain widespread recognition amongst customers and enable them to take advantage of business opportunities presented by the growing ethical consumerism trend. 4.2 Community Empowerment Network (CEN) Research Report. Urban Forum has recently published research into the current state of Community Empowerment Networks (CENs). The research report explores the impact of new Local Area Agreements (LAAs) on CENs. The following are some of the findings of the research: 1/4 of CENs are doing less empowerment work, at the same time empowerment is rising to the top of the Government's policy agenda; Up to 40% of CENs are set to lose funding; 48% of CENs will be carrying out less outreach work; 47% of CENs will carry out less neighbourhood work. 4.3 GMCVO Survey - what do you think of us? In order to help GMCVO (Greater Manchester Centre for Voluntary Organisation) improve the quality and effectiveness of the services it provides, they are inviting interested parties to complete the GMCVO Customer Survey 2008. All participants will be entered into a prize draw where one organisation can win a free GMCVO conference place for a staff member (the closing date for the prize draw is the 29th May 2008). 4.4 Joseph Rowntree Foundation Research Report- Community Leadership approaches to tackling street crime. 4.5 AGMA: Greater Manchester Grants Scheme- applications for one off funding. The Association of Greater Manchester Authorities (AGMA) considers applications for One Off grants of up to £10,000 from the voluntary sector whose services cover most of Greater Manchester. Funding is available for projects in the areas of culture (in its broadest sense), education and young people, social and community cohesion, economic development and job creation. Applicants must be properly constituted voluntary sector organisations and provide a countywide service to Greater Manchester. The next deadline for receipt of applications is 31st July 2008 for consideration on 14th November 2008, then 31st October 2008 for consideration in February 2009. 4.6 Volunteer Opportunities- Manchester Pride 2008 - Big Weekend. Manchester Pride is appealing for volunteers to help out behind the scenes at their 18th birthday - the biggest party of the summer - 22-25th August 2008 (Fri-Mon).
They're looking for people from all backgrounds to help them showcase Manchester to festival goers arriving in the city from across the UK and Europe. Volunteers will have the chance to learn new skills, meet lots of great people and contribute to one of Manchester's biggest annual events. All volunteers will need the: Ability to work on own initiative; Ability to work under supervision; Ability to work outdoors; And will need to be reliable, hardworking, enthusiastic, friendly and trustworthy. 4.7 Consultation- Participatory Budgeting: a draft national strategy. Giving more people a say in local spending Consultation. Department for Communities and Local Government. The purpose of this consultation is to seek views on the draft Participatory Budgeting Strategy. Specifically, the document seeks views on the strategy as a plan to achieve the Government's ambition for participatory budgeting to be used in all local authority areas by 2012. 5.1 'V'- Tender Opportunity. Type of service: Evaluation; Contract length: 1st July 2008 and conclude no later than 31st January 2009; Contract value: c£100,000.
