1.0 Network News
1.1 Community Network For Manchester. Update on Network Funding: The
Manchester Partnership have agreed to fully fund the first quarter's payment
up front and we are currently in the process of completing the application
form. We have still not confirmed the remainder of the funding for this
financial year but discussions are still ongoing and you will be updated as
soon as we have more information.
The Executive Group will be scrutinising the Network application forms over
the next two weeks and will agree the funding to Networks on the 24th April.
In the mean time, if any Network has an immediate need for an interim
payment, then please contact the core team as soon as possible.

2.0 Training
2.1 Starting Up Your Own Business- Free Advisory Service with
Business Support Solutions. Business Support Solutions offers advice and
information to help you become your own boss. With more than 15 years
experience in supporting local businesses, they are able to offer a
customised Business Start Up support service. If you would like to take
part, your first step would be to attend an Awareness Session, with a group
of like minded people. An accredited business advisor will give a
presentation covering all aspects of business planning. At the end of the
session you should have all the information you need to write a workable
business plan and make sure that your plan complies with the legal
requirements of setting up a business. Additional hour long one to one
sessions are then available with a fully qualified business advisor, to look
at your specific needs.

2.2 Social Enterprise Start Up Programme- Free Training. A unique
opportunity to develop your project idea into a viable social enterprise.
Business Support Solutions Start up and Legal Structure Programmes are aimed
at individuals or groups who wish to set up a social enterprise and require
support with developing their vision and planning their project. The
programmes comprise a number of Workshops and One to One business support
sessions, designed to give you the practical skills needed to develop and
start a social enterprise. If you wish to join other social entrepreneurs on
a similar journey, book on their next courses starting in APRIL and JUNE

2.3 Turbulence & Transitions: Understanding & Working in Changing
Organisations. Organised by the Tavistock & Portman NHS Trust, this one-day
workshop is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to reflect
on their experience of organisational life. The morning programme will draw
on systemic and psychoanalytic perspectives, which inform our understanding
of work in organisations. The afternoon is devoted to the practical
application of these theoretical ideas, in small consultation work groups.

2.4 New Chief Executive Programme- Run by ACEVO. The programme is
designed for newly appointed chief executives of third sector organisations
and will provide starting points for exploring the new challenges and
opportunities of the role as well as opportunities to develop a strong peer
support network. The purpose of the programme is to provide a structured
approach to the crucial challenges of leadership, management and governance,
exploring theory and its application in practice. In a supportive group of
your peers you will have time to consider your strengths, as well as develop
the expertise you want in order to manage the inevitable demands and

2.5 Workshops for Adult Learners' Week or Learning at Work Day. The
Open University in the North West has put together a wide ranging programme
of workshops which can be delivered to groups of staff, volunteers or
learners. Most of these are intended for a general adult audience who would
not be expected to have any prior knowledge of the subject, although some
are more suited to those with level 2 (GCSE level) literacy. Sessions last
from 45 minutes to 2 hours and cover a wide range of topics in the areas of
arts, maths, languages, business studies and study skills. A limited number
of these workshops can be offered free to groups in their widening
participation area (the 25% most deprived super output areas).

2.6 Accelerated Learning. This two-day training course is for
trainers, mentors, coaches and teaching professionals working with adults.

2.7 Short courses in community and youth work at Manchester
University - May - July 2008. Courses include: Developing Local
Participation- Exploring organisational structures and decision-making
procedures to identify barriers and organisational strategies to enable
participation. Youth Work Theory and Practice - Identifying the role of a
community worker in the development of young people. Class and Power -
Identify and analyse the causes and effects of class oppression as well as
models of good community and youth work practice to address them. Mentoring
as Informal Education - A look at different approaches to the various stages
of mentoring as well as the skills involved. Each course is 10 credits;
Undergraduate Level One, and costs £256.

2.8 Leadership and Management Programmes at The Co-operative
College. The Co-operative College is based in Manchester and has been
serving the educational and learning needs of the co-operative movement
since 1919. They offer a range of open management courses providing learners
from third sector organisations with the opportunity to join colleagues from
other organisations to gain relevant and progressive knowledge and skills.
They will soon be delivering three one-day leadership and management
programmes that are designed for social enterprises and smaller
co-operatives. The cost of each course including all materials and lunch is
only £50 per person for the Effective Manager and Effective Communication
courses, and £75 per person for the Manager as Developer course. To find out

3.0 Events
3.1 Transition Town Hulme Event. On Wednesday 16th April, Transition
Town Hulme will host the first "Hulme Looks Forward..." event. The event
will bring together people who live and work in Hulme to celebrate local
environmental action and discuss the future. Transition Town Hulme is part
of the Transition Town network, a loose affiliation of projects spanning the
length and breadth of the country. Transition Towns aim to meet the
challenges of Peak Oil and climate change by planning the transition away
from our current dependency on fossil fuels for energy and raw materials.
"Hulme Looks Forward..." will give local community groups and residents the
chance to meet those involved in environmental work in and around Hulme and
offer them the opportunity to get involved. It will give people the
opportunity to talk about how they think Hulme should move forward and deal
with environmental challenges. Refreshments will be provided, everyone is
welcome and entry is free.

3.2 ACEVO North Conference 2008. Join the largest gathering of third
sector leaders in the North of England! Acevo's second northern conference
will focus on Strategic Planning. Leaders from all three sectors will share
their thoughts and experience focusing on: Strategic planning and achieving
your vision; Setting and implementing long term goals; Strategic challenges
for the future - responding to threats and opportunities. This unique

3.3 Innovation and Creativity Global Citizenship Project Launch.
Development Education Project - Funded by Oxfam UK. The aim of the project
is to develop the knowledge and skills base in innovation, creativity and
risk for global citizenship. You are invited to discuss these ideas on the
24th- a final programme will be developed after Easter. The meeting will be
participative giving plenty of opportunity to share and develop your own
ideas on the process. The organisers would like short presentations, or
activities, which convey participant's own views on the creative and
innovative process.

3.4 Manchester City Council- Jobs Fairs 2008. Manchester City

3.6 Public Seminar- Challenges and Opportunities for Service
Delivery in a culturally diverse society: lessons from the Muslim community.
Key aims of the seminar: To bring together public and private service
providers and those who use their services; To examine experiences gained
from their individual perspective to find out how they have dealt with the
challenges of meeting the needs of a more culturally, ethnically and
religiously diverse British society; To explore further opportunities and
challenges for service providers arising from further immigration into
Britain from the EU and elsewhere.

4.1 Valuing Older People Awards. The Valuing Older People Board are
running an awards' nomination for inspirational older people... Voices of
Experience in Manchester. Do you know an inspirational older person? The
Valuing Older People Positive Images of Ageing team would like to hear about
what makes them inspirational. For an opportunity for them to appear on the

4.2 Manchester climate change pledge. All across Greater Manchester
almost 20,000 people are taking small steps to tackle Climate Change
supported through the 'Manchester is my Planet' programme. Greater
Manchester has an overall target of getting 50,000 people Switched-on to
Climate Change by World Environment Day on June 5th. For Manchester this
means getting just 6,000 more people to take the Climate Change pledge.
Richard Leese (Chair of the Manchester Local Strategic Partnership) said:
"I'd therefore like to encourage all colleagues within our partner
organisations, together with their family and friends, to help us reach this
goal and demonstrate that they (and Manchester) are Switched-on to Climate
Change. It only takes a couple of minutes to sign up and and pledges will
automatically register on the Manchester total as part of an online Greater
Manchester 'pledge-o-metre'." Switched-on people taking the 'Manchester is

4.3 Manchester Heroes - Do you know anyone who has gone that extra
mile? On the 7th April 2008 the Manchester Evening News and Barclays Bank
launched an Awards project that seeks to recognise outstanding achievement
within the community. They are looking for modern day heroes from the fields
of education, health, care work, community groups, the emergency services
and more - who have gone the extra mile for Manchester and its inhabitants.
25 winners will each receive £1,000 and the chance to meet Coronation Street
star Kym Ryder at a presentation where winners will receive a commemorative
trophy. The Manchester Evening News will be covering the progress of the
search for the Manchester Heroes throughout the Awards project, providing
fantastic publicity for the people you nominate as well as your
establishment.

4.4 Informal Learning Consultation. Do you value informal adult
learning? Does your organisation deliver informal adult learning
opportunities, or have you delivered them in the past before the funding
dried up? Do you want to save informal adult learning and influence its
future development? The Department for Innovation, Universities & Skills
(DIUS) is undertaking a major consultation on the future of informal
learning. The consultation document is called 'Informal Adult Learning -
Shaping the Way Ahead': closing date15 May 2008. The Third Sector National
Learning Alliance (TSNLA) is compiling a collective response from Third
Sector providers to ensure they have a strong 'voice' in the wider
consultation (it will be managed by the Workers' Educational Association).

4.5 Consultation- Participatory Budgeting: a draft national
strategy. Giving more people a say in local spending Consultation.
Department for Communities and Local Government. The purpose of this
consultation is to seek views on the draft Participatory Budgeting Strategy.
Specifically, the document seeks views on the strategy as a plan to achieve
the Government's ambition for participatory budgeting to be used in all

5.1 CN4M Network Development Officer (Maternity cover). Job Title:
Network Development Officer, Salary: NJC Scale Pt. 27. Currently £22,122,
Organisation: Community Network 4 Manchester.
CN4M is looking for an experienced Network Development Officer to cover
maternity leave from June 2008 to November 2008 (subject to funding).
We would expect the applicant to be able to: Work with our sub-networks on
all aspects of their development; Assist the finance and monitoring team in
producing reports and gathering and collating evidence; And support the
'core' function of CN4M by assisting or leading on delivering relevant
actions to the post in our Delivery Plan.
The post will be full time (35 hours per week).
We would prefer the applicant to have knowledge of and be active within the
Community Network for Manchester.

5.2 Half Time Project Support Worker. Job Title: Half Time Project
Support Worker, Salary: NJC scale Point 11 £14,197 per annum (£7,098 pro
rata), Fixed Term 3 years 18.75 hours per week (5 half days), Organisation:
Greater Manchester Neurological Alliance. Required from May 2008 to assist
on their expanding development project. Experience of Microsoft Office
programs and excellent written and verbal communication skills are
essential. This post will be based in their office in Pendleton Way,
Salford.

5.4 Centre Manager. Job Title: Centre Manager, Salary Scale: SO2,
£26,067 (pro rata) for 25 hours initially funded for 1 year, Organisation:
Salford Women's Centre. An enthusiastic and committed woman is needed for
the position of Centre Manager, responsible for the daily administration of
the Centre. Must have at least 2 years' experience managing staff and
volunteers, experience of community work, budget control and policy and
project development. Must be competent in Microsoft packages including Word

5.5 Money Advice Worker. Job Title: Money Advice Worker, Salary:
£12,623 pa, Hours: 25 hours per week, Contract: two years fixed term,
Organisation: Tameside African Refugee Association (TARA), Funded initially
for two years by the United Utilities Trust Fund. TARA is a small dynamic
charity working with refugees and asylum seekers in Tameside. They are
looking for an experienced general adviser (a minimum of two years paid or
voluntary full time experience or part time equivalent) who has a good
knowledge of debt advice especially in dealing with priority and utility
debt casework. The post will involve the delivery of an advice drop-in
service to their client group, the training and support of volunteers
working in their advice centre.
