1.0 Network News

1.1 Network Support. We are planning a series of workshops for network members on a range of issues. The first of these workshops will look at general good practice in relation to redundancy. This workshop is for both employers and employees.

The workshop will include the opportunity for one-to-one sessions with a specialist legal advisor from Direct Law and Personnel (DLP), and information from a union perspective.

2.1 Inspiring Leaders in Salford - FREE Leadership and Management seminar programme. MISPA (Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) has designed an exciting new Seminar Programme for voluntary and community groups involved in sport, health and/or physical activity (or intending to be) working in Salford (particularly Eccles). The Seminar Programme will help you identify leadership and management skills that will enable you to be more effective in your role and to have a measurable impact in your organisation. The Seminar Programme uses practical "real life" situations with limited theory and it is anticipated that participants will be selected from a range of backgrounds, interests and abilities.



The closing date for the first round of applications is 22nd August 2008, but you are advised to return your completed application as soon as possible. Potential participants will be invited to an interview.

2.2 Resolutions First - Conflict Resolution Skills Training. Resolutions First is a social enterprise dedicated to helping people manage conflicts more effectively. From September 2008, they are expanding their programme of training in conflict resolution skills...

1. Make conflict work! An Introduction to Dealing with Conflict (1 day course) - 8th October 2008. Cost: £80.

2. Conflict Mediation and Communication Skills: Part 1 - Developing Mediation Skills (3 day course) - 20th, 21st & 22nd October 2008. This 3 day course introduces the principles and skills of conflict mediation and is accredited by the National Open College Network. 2.5 BBC Journalism Training scheme. Do you have what it takes to be a trainee journalist at the BBC? 3.1 Manchester Volunteering Day. Come along and see what's on offer. Manchester Youth Volunteering Project (MYVP) and Manchester Event Volunteers (MEV), along with other partners are working towards the creation of Manchester Volunteering Day which will act as a showcase and celebration of volunteering in the City. Approximately 70 organisations will come along on the day to promote their volunteering opportunities to you and there will be CV Workshops as well as Information, Advice and Guidance.

3.2 The Family Friendly Film Festival - Friday 8th to Sunday 17th August. The Family Friendly Film Festival has hit Manchester again this summer - with over 16 venues taking part and almost 50 screenings and workshops going on over ten days. The website is now live and tickets are on sale (a few things have already sold out!) so check it out: www.familyfriendlyfilmfestival.org.uk.

There's the fantastic "Darius Goes West: The Roll of His Life" - an amazing documentary which will be part of a special Gala screening at the Bridgewater Hall on Saturday 16th August, raising money for Charley's Fund which supports research into Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the most common fatal genetic disorder to affect children worldwide. 3.3 Making Spending Count? A national conference on Participatory Budgeting and its role in Community Empowerment. Organised and hosted by the Participatory Budgeting Unit and supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government. Keynote speaker: Rt. Hon. Hazel Blears MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

4.1 Voluntary Action Manchester Launches New BASIS Project. VAM is establishing a new development project for voluntary organisations with income over £50,000, supported with funding from the National Lottery BASIS programme. There will be a range of services for medium to large voluntary organisations. These will include advice, information, training and workshops on issues such as funding, sustainability, outcomes, organisational development, commissioning and tendering. A new website and newsletter will be available from late September with relevant information for the sector.


The official project launch will be at the start of October. Invites will be sent out soon. In the following months staff hope to be in contact with as many organisations that could benefit from the project as possible.

4.2 Third Sector Skills Research 2008 launch. The UK Workforce Hub and the National Council for Voluntary Organisations (NCVO) are pleased to announce the launch of Third Sector Skills Research 2008: Further evidence and recommendations on skills gaps. Third Sector Skills Research 2008 is an in-depth, qualitative study that builds on the findings in their Voluntary Sector Skills Survey 2007. It is part of a long-term programme of research carried out by the UK Workforce Hub and NCVO in assessing the skills base of third sector organisations.

4.3 Beacons VCS Capacity Building Small Grants Programme - East Manchester Funding. VCS Groups based or working in the Beacons District of East Manchester (Beswick, Clayton and Openshaw) are eligible to apply to the Beacons Voluntary and Community Sector Community Capacity Building Small Grants Programme for a maximum of £500. 4.4 Drug & Alcohol Strategy Team publication. The Drug & Alcohol Strategy Team has just reprinted "Coming off. Staying off". This is a comprehensive directory of drugs services for adults in the city of Manchester, first published a year ago and now updated for summer 2008. 4.5 Consultations:

UK Civil Society Almanac 2009 Consultation. NCVO (The National Council for Voluntary Organisations) are currently working on the UK Civil Society Almanac 2009 and they welcome feedback from past users in order that they can improve the publication. They hope to streamline the information to make it easier to access and understand. They are mainly looking for feedback on the Civil Society Almanac 2008. However if you only have experience of earlier editions they also welcome your comments.

Time to Train Consultation. The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills is consulting on a new statutory right allowing employees to request time off for training that would benefit them and the employer.

The consultation seeks views on proposals to give employees in England a right to a serious conversation with their employer about their skills development. This new right would help encourage and support adults to develop their skills and rise as far as their talent will take them.

Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) Consultation. Your opportunity to comment on proposals for improvements to public transport and a weekday peak-time only congestion charge in Greater Manchester.

5.1 EMERGE Recycling - two posts. EMERGE Recycling is a fast growing and dynamic Manchester-based social enterprise that exists to promote the practice of the 3Rs of waste reduction.



1. REAL Skills Education Worker (14-19 year olds), Salary Scale: £15k - £18k, Hours: 35 hours a week. EMERGE require a dynamic and creative individual who has experience of, and enjoys working with 14-19 year olds. The candidate will develop and deliver high quality environmental enterprise themed education as part of the 'REAL Skills Programme'. This post is funded by the National Lottery.

5.4 Manchester Deaf Centre - Part-Time Youth Leader. Pay: £10 per hour.

Manchester Deaf Centre is run by the deaf community and provides a place for deaf people to meet and socialise. The centre also provides advice on access to services and access to British Sign Language interpreters. They are looking for a self-motivated person to work as a youth leader for the deaf centre to care for children, during Friday Youth Clubs and Easter/Summer play schemes. 5.5 Self Help Services - Mental Health and Well Being Coordinator (Tier 2). Salary: £17, 781 per annum, Hours: 35 per week, Contract: Fixed Term for 1 year, Location: Zion Community Resource Centre, Hulme (working on an outreach basis in various locations in Stockport).

Self Help Services is a user led mental health charity that has developed considerable expertise in the field of primary care mental health. The charity currently delivers a range of services including self help support groups, complementary therapy services, CBT services and a primary care mental health team.
