1.0 Network News

1.1 New Food & Wellbeing Network. The first meeting of the Food & Wellbeing Network (a sub group of the Health & Wellbeing Network) took place earlier this month. Notes from this meeting can be found at www.creativelocalsolutions.co.uk/roblog.

The second meeting of the group will take place at the MACC office, on Tuesday 2nd September from 10.00 to 12.00.

1.2 Network Support. We are planning a series of workshops for network members on a range of issues. The first of these workshops will look at general good practice in relation to redundancy. This workshop is for both employers and employees.

The workshop will include the opportunity for one-to-one sessions with a specialist legal advisor from Direct Law and Personnel (DLP), and information from a union perspective.

Date/ Time: Wednesday 20th August 08, beginning with lunch at 12:30.

1.3 Crime Forum (Central). FAO voluntary and community groups working within the areas of Hulme, Moss Side, Whalley Range, Fallowfield, Rusholme, Ardwick, Longsight, Gorton (North and South), Levenshulme and the City Centre.

Do you have a problem with crime in your neighbourhood? CSN are the voluntary / community sector representative on the Crime and Disorder Partnership and can help you tackle your local community safety needs. They guarantee feedback on all the issues you raise and will help get your priorities addressed at a senior level.

2.0 Training

2.1 Summer Toolkit Training series. Toolkit training sessions are specially tailored to keep you and your practice in good working order.

The sessions are free, designed for ease of access and for anyone involved in arts & community projects, novice or expert, who needs some fine tuning.

Dates: Sessions planned to date: 4th August - Becoming self employed; 11th August - Refugee awareness; 18th August - Disability awareness.

Venue: All sessions are held at Green Fish Resource Centre, 46-50 Oldham Street , Manchester M4 1LE .



Places are free & access costs (e.g. interpretation, disability access etc) can be covered, however a £5.00 returnable deposit (cheque or cash) is required to reserve a place. Priority is given to Manchester-based individuals.

3.1 Making Spending Count? A national conference on Participatory Budgeting and its role in Community Empowerment. Organised and hosted by the Participatory Budgeting Unit and supported by the Department for Communities and Local Government. Keynote speaker: Rt. Hon. Hazel Blears MP, Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government.

4.1 b-TWEEN: Mapping Creativity - £25,000 commission. £25K commission and four £1K development grants up for grabs by a Manchester-led team...

Manchester Beacon want to commission an interactive project that drives collective creativity to connect people, places and knowledge across Manchester and Salford. Four ideas will be selected and receive £1,000 to develop their ideas further. The final commission will be £25,000 in total.



The commissioned project will use disruptive, open source or social technologies to maximise Manchester's creative communities. It will facilitate better communication between two or more social groups and provide tools to visualise this interaction.

4.2 ESF/Community Grants - Project Towpath. Greater Manchester Voluntary Sector Learning Consortium has been awarded the contract for the Community Grants Project "Project Towpath". These grants are aimed specifically at all small voluntary and community sector groups within Greater Manchester that help people return to work. Grants can be used to provide support to 'hard to reach' communities and individuals, to enable them to access employment or further learning and training.





Applications will be assessed by an independent panel which will meet on various dates from September 2008 until February 2010.

4.3 High-performing Healthcare Charities Awards. Charities working to improve people's health and achieving excellent results could be rewarded with £35,000, thanks to GlaxoSmithKline's 2009 IMPACT Awards. GSK is offering nine category winners £25,000 each and the overall winner £35,000. Up to ten organisations can win highly commended or runners up awards and receive between £3,000 and £5,000.

Organisations must be at least three years old, working in a health related field in the UK, with a total annual income between £10,000 and £1 million.

4.4 Consultations:

Time to Train Consultation. The Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills is consulting on a new statutory right allowing employees to request time off for training that would benefit them and the employer.

The consultation seeks views on proposals to give employees in England a right to a serious conversation with their employer about their skills development. This new right would help encourage and support adults to develop their skills and rise as far as their talent will take them.

Transport Innovation Fund (TIF) Consultation. Your opportunity to comment on proposals for improvements to public transport and a weekday peak-time only congestion charge in Greater Manchester.



The Government has recently agreed in principle a package of local transport initiatives for Greater Manchester worth up to £3 billion for delivery over the coming years. 4.5 Resources available from Microsoft and NCVO event. On June 10th, Microsoft UK and NCVO (National Council for Voluntary Organisations) were pleased to work together on an ICT event for the voluntary and community sector. 4.6 Are you setting up or running a community group or not for profit organisation? The City Centre for Charity Effectiveness Trust is trialing an innovative on-line knowledge sharing website on how to run voluntary / non profit organisations. They are looking for volunteers to try out the website, especially people from small organisations who are not very confident about using the internet. Not only will you get to see some cutting edge technology in action and shape the new website but also share your experiences of setting up a not for profit group and learn from others who are doing the same. 5.1 MACC is currently seeking applications for two posts:

Strategic Development Worker (Children and Families). Salary: £25,320 - £27,594 (+ 5% contributory pension) (+uplift pending), Hours: 35 hours per week. Initially to 31st March 2009.

An opportunity to take a high-profile role within Manchester's children, young people and families voluntary sector. Working with MACC's Child and Family Support Forum, you will lead on partnership working at the strategic level and the development of the voluntary sector's contribution to policy, decision-making & service delivery. Building on MACC's successes in recent years, this is a chance to work with colleagues in all sectors and to drive and inspire change to improve outcomes for local children and families.

MACC is seeking a highly motivated and efficient person to support their networks of voluntary and community sector organisations in Manchester. You will take part in delivering strategic projects to improve outcomes for people using health, social care and community services. You will be able to show your initiative in shaping a new role, use your organisational skills to support a broad work programme and develop your understanding of social issues in Manchester.

5.2 Call for Participants - Metrolink Design Reference Group. Are you a disabled person? Do you have an interest in making public transport accessible to all? Would you like to earn up to £600 to have your views heard? Breakthrough UK has been asked by GMPTE (Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive) to recruit and facilitate a Design Reference Group of Disabled People. The group will give feedback to GMPTE in order to ensure an appropriate level of access to the Metrolink system.

The Design Reference Group will meet regularly; at least twelve times over a twelve-month period. Participants will be expected to attend at least twelve meetings. Payment will be £50.00 per meeting attended, plus expenses. They will also cover the cost of meeting access requirements. The total payment to each participant will be up to a maximum of £600.00 for the year.

5.3 BBC Children in Need Appeal - Vacancies in the North West. The BBC Children in Need Appeal is positively changing the lives of disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. Applications are being sought for Freelance Assessors (£17.50 per hour), Volunteer Committee Members and Volunteer Committee Chairs/Vice Chairs to fill vacancies in various regions (including the North West). 5.4 Manchester Deaf Centre - Part-Time Youth Leader. Pay: £10 per hour.

Manchester Deaf Centre is run by the deaf community and provides a place for deaf people to meet and socialise. The centre also provides advice on access to services and access to British Sign Language interpreters. They are looking for a self-motivated person to work as a youth leader for the deaf centre to care for children, during Friday Youth Clubs and Easter/Summer play schemes. 5.5 Self Help Services - Mental Health and Well Being Coordinator (Tier 2). Salary: £17, 781 per annum, Hours: 35 per week, Contract: Fixed Term for 1 year, Location: Zion Community Resource Centre, Hulme (working on an outreach basis in various locations in Stockport).

Self Help Services is a user led mental health charity that has developed considerable expertise in the field of primary care mental health. The charity currently delivers a range of services including self help support groups, complementary therapy services, CBT services and a primary care mental health team.
