Third Sector Research Centre - calling for literature reviews

The Third Sector Research Centre (TSRC) which was launched on 23 October 2008, is a five year investment in research on the Third Sector supported by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), the Office for the Third Sector (OTS) and the Barrow Cadbury Trust.

The Centre will systematically review existing research on the sector, and it will also assemble databases on which future researchers can draw. The Centre will work with sector agencies and government bodies to contribute to building capacity for further research across the third sector.

For further information visit: http://www.vssn.org.uk/news/news081008.htm
An early task of the new Third Sector Research Centre involves trying to gather together and critically assess recent and existing research on the UK Third Sector.
The broad parameters are:

- Research on, with or about the UK Third Sector (based on the broad definition deployed by the OTS encompassing voluntary and community organisations, charities, social enterprises, cooperatives and mutuals)
- From around 1992-3 onwards
- UK - England, Scotland, Wales and NI
As a starting point we would like to look at existing and recent literature reviews of specific aspects of the sector. So, for example, we are aware of the following:
- Halfpenny and Reid (2005) Research on the voluntary sector: an overview - Policy and Politics 30(4): 533-50
- Macmillan (2006) A Rapid Evidence Assessment of the Benefits of VCS Infrastructure
- Rochester (2006) Making Sense of Volunteering: A Literature Review
- Peattie and Morley (2008) Social Enterprises: Diversity and Dynamics, Contexts and Contributions
- IVAR (forthcoming) Evidence Review on Community Assets
What other reviews do you know about? Please help to add to this list.
The intention is to publish and circulate widely the results of the Third Sector Research Centre scoping review, and make the database of references available as a resource to researchers, the sector and policy makers.
If you can contribute to this list or you would like some futher information contact Dr Rob Macmillan (Senior Research Fellow, CRESR - Centre for Regional Economic and Social Research Sheffield Hallam University) r.macmillan@shu.ac.uk.
